The College Football Season

I saw the top 12 item in an article on espn as well, and I don't think it was the same article as referenced above. Certainly interesting.

USC blows their chance at an almost guaranteed spot in the BCS title game. Question is whether they will now ruin ND's chances when they meet the last weekend of the year (here's hoping so). I'm pulling for the winner of WVU / Louisville to get a shot at the title now if either can win out.

This USC loss pretty much guarantees that ND won't get a title shot. However, they're in the driver's seat for a BCS game.
There were some pretty bad squeakers for other teams, though. Texas barely survived, for example. We'll see how the BCS shakes out now.

I still don't think WVU/UL should get a title shot - who have they beaten? (It's a popular argument, but it holds true in this case.) UL's offense is pretty bad, and WVU's defense can't really stop anyone. One will beat the other, making this Thursday the only time I'll be interested in a non-weekend football game. Rutgers may get one of them as well.

USC was destined to lose to Cal anyway, but this loss kills me as a Pac-10 fan since it hurts Cal's chances as well. Tennessee game aside they are the best 1 loss team I've seen all season, especially what they did to Oregon.

News flash for VF and Spike - ND is the most over-rated football team in the America this year. Top 10 team? - gimme a break. I would place them 3rd or 4th in the Big 10 alone.

What other team in America can get crushed on their home field and still talk about making it the title game at the end of the year? Their schedule is full of cup-cakes yet they still struggle to win on some weekends.

ND will probably make it to a BCS game this year and make millions of extra dollars in the process, which is why I find Div I college football to be very corrupt.

News flash for kupman...

I've been a Notre Dame fan ALL my life. I'm going to continue to root for them. If you don't like it, don't read it.

They have lost 1 game... are you serious, they are actually ranked pretty low this year considering the early season loss. WHICH BTW THE BCS and BOWLS are pure crap.

Schedule full of cup cakes? Are you serious about that?... ND has and is known for having one of the toughest schedules in all the NCAA. Way tougher then lets say ... OSU or Michigan... Year in, year out nobody questions the toughness of the ND schedule, possibly you don't know what you talking about...

Anyway I was born and raised right next to South Bend... so don't even go there...

Right. Let me know when playing Northwestern and Illinois + some IAA team becomes more challenging. Bring something better to the table. Ball State? Youngstown State? Shut yer yap.:D

Where were you when ND played (in order): Georgia Tech, Penn State, Michigan, State, Purdue and all were undefeated?
Except for Ohio State and Michigan, the rest of the country has obvious flaws. BTW, if ND were in the Big 10 right now, they'd be tied for first after this weekend (think about it a little.)
Oh and FYI, ND wanted to join the Big N a while back, but the anti-catholic sentiment led by Yost kept them out. Now? Good luck. We'll keep our NBC contract, thank you very much.

ND will never join the Big Integer, and that drives everyone nuts.
Go Irish! Class of 2000.

You guys cannot be serious.....1 loss? Oh yeah, that loss was by 4 TD's on their home field. It was to one of those teams that plays Illinios and Northwestern.

ND's schedule is clearly weak this year - I could care less how tough their schedule was in the 80's. The best team they have beaten is Penn State who is currently 6-3 and is 4th in the Big 10. Does not impress me much. ND's schedule is filled with the likes of UNC and Stanford (two of the worst teams in college football) and a bunch of very average to below average teams such as MSU, Purdue, UCLA, Navy, Army, Air Force.

I doubt that they have beaten any ranked teams at regular season's end and anyone who thinks that they are BCS worthy is just delusional.

What? Seriously .. Yes by the luck of the draw the teams they played this year are not as good as they should be. Or should have been. Still in retrospect they play more top 20 ranked teams then about 18 other ranked teams.

The one loss was a bad one very bad...I give you that. But come on... ND is on the rise again dont be a hater. Lets go by strength of schedule... WHICH ND has no control over, they play pretty much the same teams year after year.

BTW IT was USC that wanted to back out of that game... not ND. Miami backed out of the ND/Miami game... Its not ND backing down.

ND is not the best team this year but I think top 4 for sure.... I can however understand the ND hate... just like the yanks and so on,

LOL ND cannot control the ranks of the teams they beat at years end. And that argument is very weak....

#1 ranked OSU has played who?

Oh ya IU 44/3 tough win...and I love anything IU...At seasons end OSU will play 3 ranked teams and ND 3... Now that 3 by OSU is only ONLY because the big 10 is having a nice year. I didn't include Iowa cause they are no longer ranked.

So basically get your facts straight before you pipe off on a board .

Who has OSU played?......uh, Texas Longhorns, have you heard of them?

There is nothing wrong with my facts. If you think that ND is a top 4 team you are just blind with team love. That is cool - it is what being a fan is about.

I can't say much this year as my Dawgs pretty much suck but that's a whole other story. I'm rooting for an OSU/Michigan ntl. championship game. They've got a great rivalry and I think it would be an awesome game.

As of last week Sagarin had Notre Dame's strength of schedule at 15 to Michigan's 7. But all this will be academic after the 11th when the Air Force Falcons beat Notre Dame. Forecast is calling for poor weather and Quinn won't be able to handle it.

Sooo, um...Illinios? Troy Smith sure looked great against the doormat of the Big 10. Ball State? Glad to see Llloyd's streak vs. the MAC continue.

Sure, ND's defense looked bad as usual, but at least the game was never in doubt.

Let's do a little math. If ND loses to teams in the beginning of the year, those teams' records look a little better by proxy, not as bad as they look now. You can't have it both ways. ND will always get their opponent's best effort because THEY ARE ND.

Sagarin is usually a fair indicator.
BTW South Bend is known for its poor weather; Quinn will be ok. ND has experience vs. teams running the option, so all should go well. Finding the game on tv will be a greater challenge than the game itself.

Quinn better lay off the sauce before the combine or he is going to get popped like Luis Castillo. That guy is ripped like a professional wrestler and plays QB. He dwarfed the Falcons LBs.

Everyone dwarfs the Falcons LB.

So how about the mighty SEC? Auburn looks pretty bad, and Florida squeaks by (literally) Spurrier.
Everything is falling into place. Now all I need is a Texas loss.

My new favorite team - for this afternoon only - Kansas State!!!

Whoooooo!!!

I recently started watching American football and my knowledge is limited, but I have learned enough to see ND is the Lakers of college football. In other words they are very, very annoying. I hope they won't play in the national championship game.

I'm loving all these upsets!!!

too bad Florida won! That would've been super crazy but exciting if they lost, too!

GO RU!

and before I went to RU, I root for (and still do, actually) for Notre Dame.

So I'm happy that our win against louisville gave RU a chance (albeit very slim), and also ND a chance at the championship game! :D

If you think Notre Dame "is the Lakers of college football" you haven't learned nearly as much about American football as you think you have.

Notre Dame has much more of a history than that. Knute Rockne is credited with modernizing the game to the way it is played today with the adaptation of the forward pass. He took a small punky team from the midwest and said, "we'll play anyone, anywhere." Back then they were known as the Ramblers, and they proceeded to beat the great teams like Army (who were amazing at the time.) Since it was a Catholic school, they obviously gained a lot of support from the Catholic community, which was predominantly Irish at the time, hence the "Fighting Irish". They then beat Michigan repeatedly to the point where UM did not want to schedule them for 30+ years.

I wouldn't liken them to any NBA team, but if I were to, it would be the Celtics.
A closer match would be the NY Yankees - a team with as much history and tradition as any in baseball. People either love them, or hate them, and the hate is usually related to jealousy ;).

BTW, I hate the Yankess, but because they buy their championships...like Ohio State. :D
