I am almost speechless.

Like JKbiker, I can see how it happened but that doesn't excuse it. The Maloofs are going to have to come up with some kind of action that emphasizes their concerns about the public and the image of their players, coaches and team without too much knee-jerk reaction.

Musselman can survive this incident, but only if he says and does all the right things.

I, too, hope it's a one-time stupid mistake. I also hope there's a limo company in town with a new client as of this morning.

I think most of us are jumping to conclusions here.

We don't know the facts, we don't know exactly what happened.

Right now we're listening to rumors and "what someone else heard."

Musselman could very well have gotten busted for a DUI at 3 a.m. for blowing a .11 on a breathalyzer test.

Or, he couldn't have.

Try to reserve judgment on this until more facts are known. Don't jump to conclusions based on rumors.

My god people he got a DUI. I'm not making light of the situation but the guy made a mistake and now he will pay for it. Why is this so "shocking".....unfortunately sports personalities are real people and they make mistakes as well.

Maybe since he's been in jail for a night he will have a little more street cred with the NBA players :D

ironic, isn't it? the guy the maloofs brought in to better engage the public gets a DUI before his first regular season as head coach even starts. :rolleyes:

i guess adelman's boring, non-confrontational 752-481 would have been more impressive if he'd been out in the public view occasionally. :rolleyes:

sarcasm aside, this was a very, very stupid thing for muss to do. i dunno if he's got personal issues that he's just trying to drink away, or if he was just out having a good time with "the boys," (whoever they may be) but this isn't a very good start for muss in the way of PR, no matter how you slice it.

Ch 31 said it was confirmed by the Sheriff's dept., I think Ch 3 also said it as well.

I agree that to fire someone for a 1st DUI is way premature. That is why DUI penalties and fines are so stiff. They are design to make people pay a steep price for their mistakes. I think a 1st DUI is a BIG wake up call to people who like to go out Drinking, and I believe most people change their behavior as a result. Now as to problem drinkers that is a different stories these people tend to re-offend over and over and should be fired, put in Jail etc.

Also keep in mind Muss will have to pay big way beyond regular law enforcement Fines and penalties. I would imagine Maloofs will have a fit, maybe threaten to fire him if he re-offends, He is going to get slammed in the Press, probably have to take some flack from some of the players (not any of them fighting for a roster, rotation slot). He will be up for much more public Himuliation than any other 1st time offender, most people just have to deal with a few family members , Muss will have to face the Whole City.

My point is that Muss will have to face so much stuff this week, I really feel he will make sure this will never happen again.

Then of course if it turns out to be a dinking problem and he re-offends Then all gloves comes off, Job loss, Jail time, and his career
could be over.

Note, the reason I'm so suspicous of this story is that I work for a newspaper.

I know what it takes to confirm a story and "cover your @$$," so you don't print something that can come back later to haunt you. i.e. get your pants sued off.

The fact that no Web site we've found has ANYTHING up yet tells me two things.

One, people are still collecting information about this event and, two, all the facts are NOT yet known.

Sorry, I don't have an exact quote but they said it was confrimed by the Sheriffs Dept that it was indeed Muss who was arrested and that it was for a DUI violation.

Eric Musselman Charged With DUI

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The California Highway Patrol arrested Sacramento King's coach Eric Musselman early Saturday morning on a misdemenor charge of driving under the influence.
According to booking records, Musselman was arrested on K St. in Sacramento around 2:15 a.m. He was booked into the Sacramento County Jail before being cited and released. Jail staff said he was released just before 6:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Few details have been released, but according to jail records, the arresting officer performed two sobriety tests on Musselman. The officer said each test recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.11%. The legal limit to operate a vehicle in California is 0.08%.
Musselman is scheduled to be in court on the charges in November

In California, a DUI is treated like your average multiple-homocide case. There is none of that "hometown free pass stuff" in Sacramento, unless of course you are a State Senator or Assemblyman. They influence Highway Patrol salaries and benefits. I see three relevant issues here.

1) Musselman is probably an alcoholic. We will soon know if he has some history.

2) Musselman apparently did not have an accident or hurt anyone.

3) Sacramento is PC-central, so Katie bar the door.

No condoning what he did, but blowing a .11 one time??? Heck the alcoholics I know woke up blowing a .11 and went from there.

It was his first freaking win in Arco - I imagine there were some drinks bought for him. Talk about jumping to conclusions.

I'm sure we would all be terrified if we know what every driver on the road would blow on a breathalyzer.

A stiff fine and sincere public apology - and that will be the end of it hopefully.

And I wouldn't give a "regular person" a pass for driving drunk... so why the hell should I give this guy one?

As people are saying rightfully so, this is extremely stupid. I know how many people get killed by drunk drivers each year and how it ruins people's lives.

While the law should have be bent for a celebrity, I really feel Muss had a "Mel Gibson" moment, or the cop just was doing his job and didn't care who he was. If Eric does the right thing and apologizes to the public, does his time etc, this will blow over, but never forgetten of course.

I'm just so mad that this is putting another bad spin on the Arena deal that now we have a lose cannon coach etc etc. While I know everyone has to pay the consequences for their action, politians etc get away with drugs, booze, hookers, etc etc and you rarely hear about it unless someone from the inside blows the whistle. I'm surprised that Eric didn't get a warning and a firm slap for this and that's it, maybe let the Maloofs know about it and they could handle it internally. Now the guy just coached his 1st preseason game, 4 games total as the Kings new coach and he is facing a huge uphill battle and the Arena deal is right around the corner here in November.

Coaches and veteran players know they can use the rookies and haze them a little, why couldn't he have someone drive him home? The kids would love a chance to talk to coachie and beg for a job anyways.

By the way how out of it are you at .11? I really think Muss pulled a Mel and was beligerant to the cop, like do you know who I am piggy??? :D

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to make light of a serious situation, but man does this news suck. Well they say you are defined as what you do when you fall down and how you get back up. Eric will have a large hole to climb out of. He definately should not be fired, but fined, address the public, his team, etc and ask for forgiveness. We all make mistakes, but this is a big one and the timing couldn't be worse! :mad:

I can think of one. ;)

But that's all probably premature. Owners are party-guys, not teetoddlers. Unless Muss has a history of this that has been kept quiet, I sincerely doubt we change course off of this one incident.

As mentioned, that might be different in a few other organizations that have had problmes before and now have a zero tolerance type policy.

The Kings looks GREAT defensively this year, and you are going to fire him for only a .11? Wow.

What he did was incredibly stupid and dangerous to other people. And for a coach...well that just is amazing. I am not sure I can ever recall an NBA coach being arrested for DUI, although I would imagine it might have happened at some point.

He got lucky, we got lucky, that nobody got hurt or killed. Now all I hope for is that this was an isolated incident that sullies his rep, but does not destroy it/him. I will say that there are certain franchises (Phoenix comes to mind) that might have fired him for this sort of thing.

wow.... sounds like someone influential got on the phone and told that cop to sharpen his eraser! A .08 is a whole different story... borderline DUI. No Contest - suspended sentence.... "misunderstanding".
