Wells agrees to deal with Rockets

Bonzi Wells, the last significant free-agent talent on the market, agreed to a two-year, $5 million deal with the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, according to his agent.
Wells holds a player option for the second year and fully plans to re-enter the free agent market next summer.
"This isn't about the money, this is about being in the right place," said Wells' agent, Merle Scott of BDA Sports.
After turning down a five-year $34 million offer from the Sacramento Kings last month, Wells fired his agent, Bill Phillips, and hired Scott a few weeks ago. Attempts to work a sign-and-trade that might've allowed Wells to match or improve the Kings' offer failed because Sacramento refused to take back any salaries after signing John Salmons with the money refused by Wells.
"We never talked about the Sacramento offer because that was gone and that wasn't going to change," Scott said.
Wells' loss is clearly Houston's gain. Wells left both Portland and Memphis after being portrayed as a malcontent, but his 13.6 points and 7.7 rebounds in 52 games with the Kings last season and a strong first-round playoff performance against San Antonio restored some of his luster. Wells and Ron Artest were a devastating forward combination and Artest personally lobbied for the Kings to re-sign Wells. Sacramento held Wells' Bird rights, meaning they could've paid him whatever they chose but drew the line with their offer slightly better than the mid-level exception.
Wells, a source said, originally wanted Phillips to land him a $50 million deal.
Denver, Boston, Charlotte and Miami also made offers but the Rockets did the best job of convincing Wells he was needed. The recruiting contingent included Yao Ming, GM Carroll Dawson, assistant coach Tom Thibodeau, coach Jeff Van Gundy, personnel director Keith Jones and Tracy McGrady, who called Bonzi directly to make his pitch.
The Rockets go into training camp next week with a potential starting lineup of Rafer Alston, McGrady, Shane Battier (acquired in a draft-night trade for Stromile Swift and No. 8 pick Rudy Gay), Juwan Howard and Yao, with Wells as the sixth man, but if Wells plays as he did against the Spurs he could challenge Battier and Howard for one of the starting forward spots.
"Bonzi doesn't care about starting," Scott said. "He just wants to be some place he can contribute."

Bonzi already admitted he is going to walk on the 2nd year and enter free agency again...

So, he or the Rockets weren't looking for a long term deal...thus, a good reason why no S&T for the TE was done.

So not only did he sign for 2 million but he most likely isn't even going to start!

Man, this guy screwed up big time. I don't remember seeing something like this happening before.

I'm going to go out on a limb right now and predict this is NOT going to end well. Bonzi Wells had it perfect here. He's not going to have it perfect in Houston. I have the strong feeling the personality clashes will start almost immediately.

Didn't Spreewell pass up a decent contract from the TWolves? Where's he at now???
But Spreewell didn't put up 23 and 12 the previous year in the playoffs and he was already 35-36 at the time. Bonzi could have a hard time salvaging his career to get that big money contract he wanted.

He actually did better, from success point of view atleast. He was one of the 3 vital reasons that took the T'wolves to WCF.

Ding Ding Ding! And I'll go out on a limb here and say the clashes start with Mr. Van Gundy, and his OHH so inviting personality and coaching style.

Houston didn't need to give up a pick or its trade exception since Bonzi was willing to accept such a small deal. My only question is why take a two year deal when you will be almost 32 (???) when the deal is over?

Bye Bonzi--off to Houston

Maybe we'll see him back next year...

So this is what it comes to, the man that PJ once called the biggest threat on the 2000 blazers team ends up with a 2 year 5 mil deal.

Talent alone doesnt work in the nba, work ethic and conduct on and off the court matter too and that is a good sign.

Van Gundy is basically the ONLY problem -- but people forget that JVG has actually gotten along pretty well with problem personalities over the years, from grumpy old Ewings and Oakleys, to Spree, to another of our former players in JJ.

Bonzi is apparently TMacs friend. Yao is as vanilla as they come. Battier is all class. The only potential sticking point would be Alston, but frankly Skip is the one who has to shape up, not Bonzi. If the minutes are there, and they should be, it could very well work at quite a high level.

Which personalities? I think McGrady seems like a cat that just wants to win. And he sets the tone. Yao is way too passive to push any agenda and the rest of the players are scrubs. i don't think Bonzi is going to add very much to make Houston contenders. It is all about T-Mac and Yao on that team and as they go, so go the Rockets.

I know of some higher up sources in the Rockets Org.

When Bonzi was in town before it broke to the media, all but one Rocket was for the signing of Bonzi.

Let's see...he played in Portland...

No ex Blazers on that team.

He played in Memphis....

There is an ex Grizz on the team....

Let's just say a particular player was all over NOT singing Bonzi and it caused a riff already.

I just don't see this going well for Bonzi considering his coach has almost the exact same style of coaching as Fratello and we all know how that turned out.
