Actually, if the opposition to this plan is no more sophisticated than the present "groups" I think we are in good shape.

What reason are they using to NOT put this on the ballot for a vote?
Oh, you know.

Illegal tax
Levee repair instead
Where are the programs for the children while it is hot
Our family is poor
Maloofs are rich, let them pay for it
Use the existing arena - it's still in good shape
Various little anecdotal stories that have nothing to do with the arena proposal (childre's programs, abused elderly, etc, etc.)
Maloofs are going to keep all the revenue and the community doesn't befefit financially
Increase per student spending for the schools
Maloofs will make $$$ that will make the amount going to the benefit of people seem miniscule
The Maloofs never let our political group park in their lots for free like the unions did
Some guy rambling is Spanish
Affordable housing complaints

blah, blah, blah.....

Basically uninformed opinions, unrelated complaints, or small organized groups.

I don't get why all these folks come pouring out of the woodwork now instead of putting a proposal together to address their concerns? Why can't they try to put proposals together that address these issues instead of ripping apart the Maloofs for an unrelated issue (arena)? Quit complaining and do something.

Basically for the most part. People are mad because they can't afford to go to anything at the current arena. How will this arena help them. Therefore there should be no publicly funded arena. That's what most of them are saying, and then they throw in the obvious we need money for schools, per student spending, levee's. All the current buzzwords for what taxes should be spent on.

People united sounded the most intelligent, but stated the same needs as far as schools, levee repair, homeless, and public housing. These are NOT people you'd want to spend any amount of time with. These are VERY VERY unfun people.

I am all about providing for the community, but we also need escape and fun. The needy don't always have to find a benefit from every tax. Harsh, but I'm sorry it's true.

My favorite reason was a teacher that stated a percentage breakdown of his foreign students. The reason we shouldn't build this new arena?? Anybody?? Because, those students who themselves and their families don't speak very good english won't understand what's going on when their taxes go up. *crickets*...ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!

Warren Cushman speaking right now. *Some random guy* He's been trying to find details on this bill, which he has not been able to........*I'm sorry if you can't use the internet and listen to the radio where they have been talking about the details for a week.* This is the first time he's able to speak publicly about this bill and he thinks that's sad. Thinks it should be a 2/3 vote. Promises about the funds going back to the communities is bogus. It will go to the general fund and be used for whatever the cities want. Maybe even for arena over runs......

This folks is your classic conspiracy theorist.

Now you have a guy that says develop the railyard if you want. But don't neccessarily do it with the Maloofs and the Kings if the deal doesn't work. Get proper rent..blah blah blah...

THis INFURIATES ME. WHY THE **** WOULD YOU BUILD THIS DAMN THING AND NOT HAVE THEM INVOLVED. They have an entertainment group that can bring you could shows and conventions and take on all operating costs, and has a staff that already knows how to run the thing.

What reason are they using to NOT put this on the ballot for a vote?
Some things I remember (and feel free to correct me anytime) -

- Some people are more concerned about those sleeping on the streets of Sacramento and poor (downtown, Oak Park) and would like to see money used to helping them instead of "billionaires."

- Some feel that there is nothing wrong with Arco Arena and one even said it would be fine if the Kings left because another team will want to come here. He doesn't realize though that Arco Arena will be torn down and no other team would come here because we would have no facility and we would have to make it ourselves with 100% public financing.

- Some feel it is not okay to put a sports arena first before schools and to not make a "sweetheart deal for the Maloofs." Said it was horrible public policy and bad public policy to help those who can afford to attend games. Said she can't afford to attend any events at Arco Arena and that having high school graduations at the Memorial Auditorium is just fine and nothing wrong with it.

- Another woman brought her two children to voice her opinion to not have it on the ballot because the new sales tax would take away a gallon of milk from her children. Said her husband works three jobs and they live in Tahoe Park. (I'm wondering why she isn't working and didn't her trip to the meeting take money out of her pocket to get that gallon of milk?)

- Low income families see no benefit from this (non-profit organizations spoke on that a lot).

- There are many who do support this measure so don't think it's all negative feedback. Some even brought up how well Indianapolis, Denver and other cities have fared with a new facility.

This whole "taxes going up and impacting the poor" just cracks me up.

The poor don't pay a lot of sales tax because - work with me here - they don't make a lot of taxable purchases. New car? Nah. Luxury yacht? I don't think so. Food? Not taxable unless purchased already prepared. Clothing? I don't think they're going to notice the 25 cents for every $100.00 purchase having much of an impact.

The guy who goes into Walmart to buy the $19.74 shirt isn't going to notice it just cost him an extra 4.9 cents in sales tax.

Part of the problem is that the people who are supporters are not addressing any of the concerns of the non-supporters. All they're saying is "it would be great...it would be good for Sacramento...yada, yada, yada". There are far more people against it and they are P.O.'d. But none of the supporters seem to be terribly educated in the real benefits of the arena AND the problems if it DOESN'T pass.

Hi, this is my first post, but just want to say I like the board and you guys are awesome with the posts.

Some comments on the issue that may end/preserve the Sacramento Kings:

1. This has become a BLANK and moan session for everyone in the County to vent. (Did anyone see that "How can I afford milk for my children?" story???)

2. Some of these people come to every board meeting and complain.

3. I have been watching for about 25 minutes, and counted 4 people for the measure, 15 against.

4. Some jerk on now about environmental lawsuits, which is not legally permissable actually without a federal affidavit, which is likely to happen anyway with EPA inspection. All projects above 8 million dollars have to clear massive economic hurdles, so the point is moot.

5. All people commenting, for or against, seem grossly uninformed and pretty much baseless.

6. The girl to the left of the podium is hot.

7. Seems like the board has already made up their mind and that they were fully expecting this.

I COMPLETELY AND ABSOLUTELY AGREE. At this point on July 25th at 2:25pm I am embarrassed to be a Sacramentan. I am so upset, what a bunch of cowtown yahoos. sorry. :(
