Amick: De’Aaron Fox requests trade

interesting salary bits:

However, being traded would eliminate any possibility of earning a supermax extension, even if Fox were named to an All-NBA team this season. (To be supermax eligible, players must be with their original team or have been traded while still on their rookie contract.)
If Fox were traded to San Antonio (or any other team with significant cap space), he would be permitted to renegotiate his salary from $37.1 million to $46.4 million six months after the deal, in addition to being eligible to sign a four-year, $229 million extension that would start in 2026-27. If Fox were traded in the offseason instead, the earliest he could renegotiate and then extend his contract with a team such as San Antonio is in January
should add confidence for any dark horse looking at him. If I’m reading that right, the only way he gets a raise post trade is if we trade him now and he immediately renegotiates his salary. If a team acquires his and says “we’ll give you an immediate raise but you have to extend,” that gives him a $10mm incentive to commit to wherever he lands

I don't recall in recent history any player that demanded a trade with the motivation of winning a championship, that was then actually dealt to the team they wanted to go to, that then went on to win a championship. Has it happened at all in the last decade? It's easier said than done and it just sounds grumpy to say, but some of these players need to have some humility. Most of these guys have no clue what the formula is for a championship team.

It seems to me that the most common thread between recent championship teams is that the teams main players stayed on the same team for a long time. This is true except for the Toronto Kawhi Leonards.

It appears that under Stepien we could get up to 8 FRPs and our swap back (though one of those picks probably converts to two seconds). So if they like Castle that much, OK.
Right. The three ATL picks, the 2028 Celtics unprotected pick, the 2030 Timberwolves pick, the Chicago pick, the Spurs pick this year, another couple Spurs picks, and our swap back would suffice.

The way I figure it, we leave them their own pick this year - they would have to keep either SAS 25, ATL 25, or SAS/ATL 26 by Stepien. So we take:

ATL 25
CHI 25(11+)--->26(9+)--->27(9+)--->SRP
CHA 25(15+)--->2 SRPs
ATL/SAS 26 swap
ATL 27
BOS(2+)/SAS 28 swap
DAL/MIN(2+)/SAS 30 swap
MIN 31
Removal of SAS/SAC 31 swap

They get to keep:

SAS 25
SAS 27
SAS 29
SAS 31

Note to all - I think it's pretty obvious we won't get ALL OF THAT in a hypothetical deal. But that's the absolute taken-to-the-cleaners version (well, I mean, putting reverse swaps on 27/29/31 is the absolute to-the-cleaners version, but let's not get greedy!)

you also are not getting Vassell and Castle. Figuring out how to get Vassell and Johnson was pretty good imho.

sure let’s get Castle and recreate our guard glut.

if we don’t come out of this with forwards then Monte is who I think he is. We aren’t playing fantasy here.
Castle is a 2 who can slide 3 - he's basically the same size as DeRozan. If we trade Fox, and get Castle, our guard rotation looks something like:

PG: Monk/Carter
SG: Ellis/Castle

And we can't exactly count on both Carter and Castle panning out. DeRozan isn't really being used as a guard anyway, so he's not part of the "glut". And, speaking of fantasy, I have Castle on fantasy team, and let me point out that if it weren't a keeper league he'd be on waivers. Castle is a swing at somebody who might turn into a high-level, two-way starter. If he does, you don't worry about a "glut". If he doesn't, you don't have a glut.
