Yeah, he was bad. Picked at #10, so eligible for the poll, and with Klay and Kawhi on his heels...he'd have gotten real consideration if he had been on the list.

To me the Bagley, Robinson and Davion picks are the top 3.

Agree. Davion was a terrible pick considering team needs and that most the players you mentioned picked behind him were discussed by fans as possibilities.
Robinson just sort of popped in our laps and even though Lilliard was there, it made sense at the time. Bagley even seemed like a sound choice despite most this board clearly wanted Luka.

Davion was a bad pick because he was less talented than several other options. He was an older prospect with only one year of good shooting, physically limited, and with a relatively high floor, but also a low ceiling.

My pick that year was Wagner followed by Sengun and Jalen Johnson. Not because of the positions they played, but because I just thought they had far more potential.

In 1996 the Suns had two of the best point guards in the NBA in Kevin Johnson and Jason Kidd. And yet with the 15th pick in the draft they took Steve Nash.

Because he was the best available player even if he didn't fill a need. In hindsight the Suns should have gotten more for him, but they got some minor pieces and the first round pick that became Shawn Marion

This is the hill I'll die on - the draft is solely about talent acquisition, not roster balancing other than maybe for championship level teams that are looking to fill a specific role.

This seems like the one time Monte missed big on talent evaluation even if he was already thinking about a potential move of Fox or Tyrese. He was not BPA though Monte seemed to think so. Also a guy we didn’t work out iirc. Those always bite us outside the decision to only work out Marvin.

Davion was not on the poll, so I didn't look at him. It's also a little bit early to come to strong conclusions about the draft. That said, you've got to go seven picks before you can find a real regret pick after Davion, so clearly consensus fell on a bunch of players who didn't pan out. Can't really call it that bad of a pick if everybody else didn't find the "right" picks either.

IIRC there were some pretty big whiffs in the remaining part of the lottery. Sengun was considered a big reach at 9.

Herb and Trey never would have went that high. I think Sengun/Moody/Jalen were the three guys constantly floated around as lotto picks at that time. As was Davion, fwiw.

Davion was all over the mocks iirc. Some had him going early which was probably what was needed for us to have a chance at Franz or Kuminga.

I could be wrong but I thought it was the difference between Noah and Hawes in 07. Definitely one year put us in a coin flip that hit the lottery.
