It would be a smart move, but I think we are beyond the point of trialing unproven players in the starting lineup. We need a bonafide upgrade, the real deal and a player that we know can play at a high capacity. Half the problem with Barnes, at least offensively, is that we never know what we are going to get out of him. Sometimes he scores in the single digits, misses almost all of his 3s and other times he hits his shots and becomes the efficient scorer we have been accustomed to. He seems to be aging hard and it’s high time we upgrade that position.
Look at the playoffs last year, Huerter and Barnes were both underperforming significantly and we were ousted. We can’t have 40% of the starting lineup be a question mark in terms of performance. Huerter has largely been playing well so I think we can get away him being the starter, but we can’t have both of them underperforming.
I don’t think Brown would do this, but I’d entertain the idea of Sasha starting at the 3 and bringing Barnes off the bench. The other thought is, and I can’t believe I’m about to write this, but Kuzma does make sense for us and is a proven commodity. He fits the age range, is signed to an extended contract, and would be able to provide most of the things that we would need out of that position. The only question mark with him is defense, but I don’t think he’s terrible or a lost cause.
