DOMAS BACK!!!

I what world are you living that the third team all NBA center is an overpay? Have you seen the contract given out over the past two days? And no you can’t say they were all overpays….this is the current market rate.
When you think of overpayment, you look at what was done in the season......he had a relatively poor playoff performance but phenomenal regular season,.....so this was a calculated gamble......and I don't think McNair has an alternative. The gamble (risk) is Sabonis wigs out in the playoffs again given adversity as a trend. The catch-22 is they also need him to make the playoffs to begin with so overpayment it must be. You do want your stars to elevate their games in the playoffs as well., and that didn't happen this year from Sabonis. The Kings need to get a player to help shore up rebounding with Sabonis. Vezenkov hopefully will help a chunk. Having Lyles on the floor with Sabonis definitely helps.

Hate to be the one ho points it out but running back an obvious team with room for improvements not only thru internal growth but external moves doesn't warrant your level of dark cloud behavior.

There are so many signs that point to running back a young squad as smart, plus the plug and play options added to help, plus the signing of your core for a long term run, that makes your post look reactionary at best, but ignorant at worst.

Sorry fam.

do 10% raises on 42.2 million and you are north of 60 in the last year.

42.2 + 46.42 + 51.062 +56.1682 + 61.78502 = 257.63522 =North of 51.5 million average.
I think our maths are different? Here’s my understanding: The projected salary for the 2024-2025 season is: 142.8million

Sabonis has over 7 years of experience and would qualify for the 30% max salary cap with 8.5% annual raises. A typical 4-year max contract next year would end up looking like:

2024-2025: 42,840,000
2025-2026: 46,481,400
2026-2026: 50,432,319
2027-2028: 54,719,066

total: $194,472,785

Here’s the number James Ham gave for Sabonis’ actual extension:

total new money (not counting this season): $187.4million

Comparing the year by year number, it’s a $2million difference. But Sabonis isn’t actually giving up any money. On paper, he makes up for it this year because we’re giving a raise of $7.7million this yearwhich is actually more than the difference. which is close to the difference.

If anything, this is a great job for Monte’s team being able to sell Sabonis on the pitch. He “accepts” less, but in reality he doesn’t. He’s just getting paid his money earlier, but it saves the Kings about $2million extra in cap space.

I think we just figured out what Monte spent the 24th pick on?

But I don’t think Sabonis should be painted as someone who gave up less money… he didn’t. He got paid his max.

Bruh all I said was domas looked like **** against the Warriors that he needs to get better at that and here are you acting like I'm saying that the world is going to end.

Wtf are you talking about, you sound reactionary af I don't even think what I was saying was unreasonable.

That why I said calm down, it really wasn't so unreasonable what I was saying

I love everything about Domantas Sabonis game and thrilled Kings now extended one of our two superstars for five years. The quintessential team player and can dominate offensively too. If there was one thing I would change would be Sabonis disregard for any protection wearing gear. For some reason forgoes slip-on sleaves covering both arms or at least left shooting arm. At the end of each game or during the game often minor bleeding visible from contact one or both totally exposed arms, shoulder, neck, face, etc. Sleaves would help a lot. Blood mostly result opposing players fingernails scratching rough tussle of the game which not only can be reason for stoppage but worst case cause an infection. Cover up Domas and mitigate multiple scratches, the blood, the risk.

I thought they were allowed 10%, so yeah 8.5 would tweak it. But you're also leaving out that if he signs next year he'd want a full 5 years which still puts 2028-2029 at 59.37m.

Sabonis was god awful in the playoffs, but he still deserves this contract. He's the main reason why we even made the playoffs in the first place. Securing 1 of your 2 franchise cornerstones is an important move for this team. What's the alternative option? Let him test out FA next year? He might not come back... and we'd have no replacement for him.
He wasn't "god awful", but mediocre to poor.. Huerter was closer to "god awful", and is probably on the hot-seat this coming year.

That 5th year is interesting. I don’t know enough about the CBA, but it could be one of the things that wasn’t in the plans.

Regardless of my irrelevant skepticism, I’m really happy about this extension. Sabonis deserves every penny and I’m glad we avoided FA

It was really a choice between paying Sabonis $217M over 5 years (age 27-32) versus $276M over 6 years (age 27-33). Considering that no other team can offer more money than the Kings for Sabonis next year, I would have used the cap space this year to get an asset. We will have not have much cap space next year (Monk resigning) and we don't have a FRP either (Huerter trade). We will be left with only the trade route to improve the roster. Kings went the low risk route and Sabonis is getting paid either way.

The big question to me is does this deal assist with getting Monk re-signed next year by allowing us to offer a few million more? I don't know.

Also guessing when all the smoke clears we'll be one of the few contenders eligible to take on buy out players this season. And possibly one of the few teams that can use the full MLE next year that is in contention. Having Domas already locked up will make us more attractive in that regard on day one?

Folks, I just have to say this:

Webber/Peja/Bibby/Vlade/Christie/Bobby/Hedo/Scot (Adelman) was a championship team. That championship was stolen from us, and we all know it.

Fox/Domas/Keegan/Monk/Barnes/Huerter/Vezenkov/Davion/Lyles (Brown) is going to be a championship team in the next three years. And it ain't gonna be stolen this time. Book it.

Out of all of the players on the team - I got the feeling Monk gave it his all most consistently......to me he will certainly command (and deserve) a large raise, if he plays similarly next season. Sabonis was the point-center and glue out there, but he needs help on the inside still. Vezenkov may help with that, as I Iliked his rebounding, withnoted his large size. How Vezenkov fits in will be important next year surely. I'd also like the Kings to resign Len on the cheap (if possible) to fidget with lineups defense and shot blocking. Davis has potential to be a "late-bloomer", but I think other teams are probably prepared to pay him better than what the Kings will. He would be a decent injury insurance, but I'm sure that's not the role he'd like.

We need just one more wing piece imo but agree with you if we find this piece

I like your optimism, though the championship wasn't stolen.....gotta make your Free throws in close games.

Because Sabonis take good shots. He usually feeds everybody before it's his turn. In other words, he would be shooting when he see the clock it running out. In the Playoffs, it was too early most of the time and he doesn't feel comfortable shooting early in the shot clock...that's what I think. And so it messed up his mentality...he was not the type that like to shoot early in the shot clock.
That

I believe Game 7 was fairly officiated and Sacramento lost that game fair and square.

Game 6 was rigged to get to Game 7. I feel like the NBA thought this would be inconsequential, Kings would win Game 7 and both teams would contend for 3-5 more years, so who cares? Stern knew it which is why he saved Sacramento.

If Samaki Walker's prayer shot at the end of the first half had correctly been ruled after the buzzer in Game 4, I also believe there is no way possible that LA comes back and wins that game on Horry's buzzer beater. They played a perfect second half and won on a fluke play.

So yeah, I feel pretty good saying the series was stolen from us, though that's the way the ball bounces.

This is great news for the Sacramento Kings.

Without Sabonis, we would still be counting years of playoff drought. It was clear, as the season went on, that extending him became the number one priority for the franchise.

Sabonis is one of the top 15 players in the NBA. He is young, with room still for improvement, and has all the intangibles any NBA team is looking for. He is a leader who makes players around him better. He helps attracting talent and gels seamlessly with the talent you already have (remember Fox’s hug?).

Indeed, he can still improve as a player. That said, if you believe you should try to short-change such a player, I am glad Monte disagrees.
These type of players don’t grow on trees. Any smart GM in Monte’s situation would pretty much pay him whatever he wants. Not because he is perfect, but because he is worth every penny.

Kudos to Mr McNair. It’s nice to have a competent GM!

I'll be the one guy to say it I guess, but there is quite a bit of risk involved with deals this size regardless of how good the player was last season. Just look at the bradley beal thread, there's more people discussing his contract than his on-court merits, if you think Sabonis is immune to that sort of treatment I say just wait n see.

Let me just outline how I'd think this would end up being an underwhelming deal for the Kings, its actually quite simple really, it looks a whole lot like that playoff series vs the Warriors. Sabonis has averaged 12 rebounds the last 4 seasons, he was held under that number in 5 out of 7 playoff games. He's picking up lots of fouls in that series and obviously not making his jumpers either, so thats pretty much it, the worst case scenario, we've already seen it, he didnt even really play that great in the game 6 we won too, our back court did the heavy lifting that game for certain.

He is the starting C in the league with the shortest wingspan, one of the ways he nullifies this disadvantage is using his body and positioning proper and all the fundamentals. But can he hold those advantages vs all opponents? sure seemed like a struggle vs Keevon Looney.. And a very important follow up question is can he play that kind of physical ball without picking up too many fouls? Your 20 million dollar center getting into foul trouble early isnt quite the same as your 50 million dollar center getting into foul trouble early --- i sure hope this contract hasn't doomed us to sitting around and blaming the refs! He's never picked up as many fouls in his career as he has for the Kings, and he averaged 4 PF's per game in the playoffs..

My biggest worry, by far, is If we have a situation where we're signing a player who grabs a ton of rebounds over the course of the season thru high volume on a high paced team, where he's got sorta combo-forwards like KM and Barnes who arent exactly noted rebounders at the PF position, and then when we hit the playoffs teams are able to gameplan and go big to shut that down much better. I've always brought that up when discussing Sabonis at C, and in the regular season it worked great but in that playoff series it did manifest.

Now the good news is clearly we're pretty much running it back, if the rebounding rears its ugly head in the playoffs next season as it did this one, we can of course change things up and account for that.

The other thing that makes me wonder is just, we're sorta in bed with small-ball now, and with Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren aroudn the west should also be taller. We'll see. should be fun. Dont mean to be a wet blanket but lets not just pretend we just won the championship because we signed the guy, still a whole lotta roads to cross.

I'm pretty sure theres a sizable chunk of NBA fans who just love to see other teams big name stars fail, like Nelson Muntz saying Ha Ha in the simpsons, that seems like the peak of many fans experience... So now Sabonis will be one of those guys with this deal.. Hope he's worth it and more. Good Luck to him in trying to fulfill such a contract its a tall order.

and for goodness sakes ya hope he stays healthy..

So next stop NBA Finals amirite?

Odd to see this made it to page 3 without the word Championship being mentioned..

When you pay someone this kind of money the goal is to win the championship right? So thats why I'm not that crazy about this deal as everyone else around here. Getting a fair price on the market doesnt do it for me, now we gotta win, no excuses!!!

You’re 100% right. I’ve made the same argument for 20 years. While changing circumstances often means changing everything that happens afterward, in the case of game 6, I don’t see the outcome changing for LAL after Walker’s late half court shot.

In our revisionist history, had the NBA correctly ruled that shot no good, the LAL would have been down 3 more points.

It took every thing they had and every break they could get to only be down 2 on that final possession. They didn’t catch up or take the lead at any point before the final shot.

Had they needed to make up an additional 3 points, there’s no chance they are within one score at the very end.

We'll see. I still think the team might need that Bibby move. Once the Bibby move was made a 44 and 55 win team turned into a 60 win team.

And we gave it three years with Jason Williams before making that move. I'd be ok with a Bibby move in another season. No reason to do that in year two because we're still learning what we have.

Considering it's reported that it's $217 mil in total and $195 mil in new money (currently is paid $22 mil), it should be around this:

1688299939317.png

Looks like his extension will come in just under a max contract (~$3-4 mil less than a max contract each year), and it looks like they gave him about a $7,691,225 raise this year.

That’s a whole lot of clams, but exciting for Sacramento. Made me think of when Webber resigned after not wanting to be here at all, that too was feel good.
I’m not sure how we can make any future run at OG, which is is high on my wish list, or resign Monk, a must, but one step at a time.
