They can't just go over the cap and maybe pay luxury tax?
It's not about how much we are willing to pay, it's about how much we are allowed to pay. To sign another team's free agent, you have to use cap space (or an exception, but no exception is remotely large enough for what Middleton is expected to make). We could have perhaps squeezed Middleton's $30M+ expectation into cap space if we renounced Barnes, and our other free agents, etc. but instead we signed Barnes and brought in Duarte. There's just not remotely enough cap room for us to make a plausible offer.

This is a pretty weak free agent class.

mainly I wanted the Kings to get some more rebounding, size and athleticism in the front court but I was pretty cold on just about all the “big” free agents. All the guys I would like are restricted
Me too.

No one really interested me that much

Considering Lonzo’s done, I don’t hate this for the bulls
I don't really like this for them. They already have a crap ton of guards between LaVine, Caruso, Dosunmo, and White. I know most of those guys can play either SG/PG, but you just added another name to the hat. And then you have a ball-dominant DeMar to top it off.

I don't see how everyone gets minutes next year

Thanks, appreciate the answer.

So basically we are not really going to get anyone anymore unless they cost like 13 mil or whatever at this point.

In terms of free agency

I believe you are correct. Teams often find clever ways of squeezing blood from stones...but not $17M worth of blood.

Why though? I guess so Franz can see what he'll be like in 10 years?
Why not? As an eastern conference team, you just witnessed the big boys like Philly and Boston literally toppled in the Playoffs, which should give you incentives to kickstart/fast-track the team and see if you can get into the Playoffs picture with a relatively young roster. Like the Kings last season.
