Yeah, in that report it pretty much tells his story off the dribble in mid range. If he's not getting to the rim it's not so hot. His shot chart is basically very limited in usage from the corner 3's, good up top from 3, good at the rim, and very good in the post area in the paint on post ups.
Man some people here are so hung up on shot charts... It's so weird.. It's like they want players to play for an even shot chart and not... to win! and hold his feet to the fire based off this nonsense..
Murray was dominant around the rim so thats where they funneled him.. What kind of coach is gonna be like "ok Keegan your really good at the rim so we're gonna force you to play to your weaknesses".. this is not little league..
If Iowa had the personnel to showcase him at other spots on the court they could've, and he'd have adjusted... I think this is whats really lost... But they didnt. so all parties were forced to make due.
The Shotcharts on Lonzo Ball, and his magnificent 3pt shooting, coming out of college are why he was selected infront of Jayson Tatum and De'Aaron.. end of story..
IDK I'm one of those crazy people who watches the games and then looks at the skills, I was chomping at the bit in the early season to see Keegan becuase there was a lot of hype about him preseason.. and I get that people take a great deal of comfort in looking at numbers, but sometimes it leads to these wild narrative biases, where we're pigeon holing a players NBA role based on the lesser competition he was forced to play with and against..
He didnt have good players around him at Iowa.. His brother was solid but no real PG, Bohannon is a one dimensional 3pt shooter, no C, they played zone defense, didnt have wings who were decent 3pt shooters.....
My point is that little fractions of seconds where a player would be open or would have bunch of help defense rushing at them affects these shot charts greatly, Murray has a great deal of skills up his sleeve to be effective all over the court, especially when you presume he's got actual NBA players surrounding him instead of amatuers. Now he's got Fox whos a threat to blow past an entire defense in the blink of an eye, and all these NBA quality shooters, and a bigman who can put up 5-6 asssists like Sabonis, defenses wont be able to shade him as often or as quickly and more of the floor will open up for him.
there was always 2nd defenders ready to run at Murray to help, this explains why the midrange game wasnt always open for him, he'd have been playing right into defenses hands/making it easier for opposing teams/coaches settling for midrange shots.. Instead he was using his fakes on the catch and then a 2nd fake on the move near the paint, which is much more of a "this translates to professional basketball" typa thing..
