[KINGS] Comments that don't warrant their own thread (Redux)

I know not everyone is a fan of Bill Simmons, but there was a short discussion of fox and his recent play in his podcast from Thursday. Something along the lines of... "I still wouldn't have done the trade, BUT.... the Fox/Sabonis pairing does make a lot of sense, and I'll at least give the Kings credit for not giving up on Fox." (not a direct quote). It's always interesting to see the reactionary hot takes in the heat of the moment from the national media (the sky is falling; fox is terrible, overpaid and should be dumped; how could you trade Haliburton???) and then the slow drip of walk-backs over the next few months. Loudly proclaiming another idiotic KANGZ move apparently gets more clicks than later providing a more level-headed assessment of how things are turning out.

There were absolutely people who argued he had tremendous instincts that made up for his slow feet.
To be fair, those same people said the exact same thing about Tyrese’s basketball IQ making up for him being incapable of staying in front of his guy on defense, which according to Bruski is a completely different thing?

Bjelica played solid defense during that 39 win year. Passed the eye test and the analytics show it. He had some of the best analytics in the league for the first couple months that year and then started to return to earth. Don't care what Bruski says, he was a huge reason why the Kings almost hit .500 that year.

absolutely no freaking one thought Bjeli was a good defender lmfao
Yeah, I have no idea what he's talking about. Bjelica had his good moments as a defender but he also got singled out and picked on by good back to the basket scorers to the point where we were forced to sub him out against certain teams. His main strengths were shooting and passing the ball well for a big guy. Being better on defense than rookie-year Bagley is what kept him on the floor so much, but that's feint praise. And Haliburton is often really good as a weakside defender but also overmatched in one-on-ones. That doesn't take away from all the positive things he does on the court though, it just means he's not a perfect player -- like pretty much anyone. He plays with heart and enthusiasm which is always fun to watch. I'm not going to turn on him now that's he's on another team.

And it’s now just Ty’s foot speed that got him cooked against Davion. Strength also played a role. Ty couldn’t hold position and knock Davion off-course.

Now, Fox has quick feet and is pretty strong - but still doesn’t keep his man in front of him.

Some of its desire and some of its scheme. I anticipate Ty will improve as a man defender once he gets stronger and has a rim protector behind him. Currently, he might be the poster boy for the difference between man and team defense.

That year was sort of an outlier for everyone. I don't think anyone had any praise for Bjeli under Luke's system, which is also when folks started turning on Fox. It all fell apart at the trade deadline when Barnes came in and Shump went out, particularly sad in retrospect since Shump would have still got minutes the way Joerger used Barnes.

Didn't our own Foxy just do something like that?
Are there any ramifications, younger gentle readers of this forum?
Dont think it’s close to the same - the indictment is for a straight “take the money and run” where the Fox NFT project seems like it was maybe just poorly run? Bigger thing is it’s still active and Fox’s prior tweets indicated they’re doing more over the offseason. And I sure hope some lawyers wrote those tweets because a dude with a $200mm contract can certainly hire the people to navigate a correct way out from this garbage

which of course it is, garbage. But he’s far from the first public figure to get sucked into it

that said it’s the Kings so let’s not count out us making a run next year to the cusp of the playoffs just in time for him to get indicted and yanked off the court

I think they were done for regardless. Shump had been ice cold for a good month before he left and Barnes showed up. A lot of people seem to think it went downhill as soon as Barnes got here but the hot streak was already over by that point. We'll never know if they could have finished over .500 if they had just kept things the way they were but I think teams were on to what the Kings were doing by that point and had adjusted. Makes sense that they were hot to start the year considering they played grit and grind with ZBo the year before and then ran like crazy to start the next year. I think Buddy logged more miles than any other player that year. Back when he actually tried.

Honestly don't know what killed it, there was the drama between BW and Coach Joerger and when it was clear both seemed likely to lose their jobs for going public with a feud that didn't help either. Bagley got hurt after Christmas, in what would become the new norm for him. And then Coach Bagley started to do his thing. So yeah, it was clearly fool's gold unfortunately. But it did feel like Shump was the unspoken captain of the group and while it appeared trading him was to do a solid so Barnes could man the 3 spot, we played Barnes at 4 and tried to force that Buddy/Bogi pairing the rest of the way.

It's so sad to think that at the start of the new year in 2019 there was so much optimism and it all lead to some of the lowest lows.

Hell the other day I was thinking in this lineup of players who can all pass the ball to the open man bringing B Jelly back wouldn't be a bad idea. Not only can he pass but he can hit the three ball and stretch the floor alongside Sabonis you just have to find a coach who knows how to coach Princeton or Triangle. But whatever. He wasn't brought in as defensive stopper and he didn't leave because he failed to do the job.

Good organizations should do a ton of self scouting in order to hold themselves accountable. Monte is entering year 3. Thrive or die. Best way to thrive? Start Davion. If Fox can't play the two spot, move him to the bench or trade him.

This is such a disrespectful statement from Dave. People might disagree with you, that doesn't mean they were "triggered". There is a way to frame that statement without insinuating that anyone who disagrees is being irrational.

My question is, when a fanbase consistently turns on their highest paid player for over 20 years and makes them the source of the problem regardless of age, position, skillset, or even team record (the team was still winning when this happened to CWebb) ... at what point do we just have to admit that the fanbase itself is toxic?

We may have different definitions of what toxic may be. I don't think Kings fans are toxic. I follow other teams in other sports, where fans are on a completely different level. Kings fans are a tier below college fans. Where college fans are ride or die, either because they went to the school or had a parent or relative, who went to the school. Holding your "top" players accountable for wins and losses is fair. That is ultimately what matters. If Walton had a winning record, he'd be here. If Vlade had a winning record, he'd be here. If Fox doesn't win next year, it's fair to consider changes for his role or whether he should continue to be a part of the team. It has nothing to do with money. I'm happy he got paid. Set up his family for life.

All fanbases are toxic and Kings fans are no exception.

Why would he be jealous of Morant, I was told Fox OWNS him 1 on 1 which means Fox is better. But I would not mind seeing Davion and Ox next year.

Dave has turned into a pretty condescending and passive aggressive person.

Hard to say that the fanbase is toxic when its basically a miracle there is any significant fanbase left. When the franchise has been the most incompetent franchise for the past 15+ years by a far margin, there will obviously be a reaction from the fans. Fans getting frustrated for the highest paid player is quite understandable when the ownership and management year after year declares that we are shooting for playoffs and there is zero improvement ever.

Always the same story: team is not good enough to compete, refuse to make long term plans for the future and instead trying short term win now moves for the present. Year after year the plan fails, the plan puts us out of the premium picks in the draft and then its rinse and repeat. The fanbase isnt stupid. They understand that the same plan has been unsuccesfull for 15 years in a row. Give them a plan that focuses on few years ahead and make moves that support that plan. Or we can continue as usual, change nothing and keep being the absolute worst franchise in the future too. Dropping 7th pre lottery is a great example on incompetency when it was clear for a long time that we arent a competitive team yet. If it happened by playing Queta and gleaguers then so be it. In this case it happened by for some mysterious reason playing Barnes for 38mins
