Plenty of names are being thrown out there by both fans and by people who have connections to the team. Some of these include Sam Hinkie, Bobby Webster, Scott Perry, Joe Dumars, etc.

I really hope the Kings take their time with this decision and they interview many candidates.

My personal favorites would be either Sam Hinkie or Bobby Webster.

I’m not qualified enough to say anything other than after his Knicks tenure, I’m none too high on Scott Perry.

I do like the Hinkie Process... but only if it actually works, lol. Blowing it up completely and building through draft picks is the way Sacramento has to do it. We’re obviously not getting any marquee free agents that will move the needle, and our assets aren’t going to get a return that will boost us to the next levels But if you stay terrible and still miss your pick almost every year you get what happened with DMC.

Here is why you have to actually interview people for the job.

Vivke: Hi Sam, Vivek here. I have this basketball team. We haven't been so good recently. I'd like to be better. Given our current roster construction, the financial situation we have and being from a small market that tends to retain free agents, but not attract them how would you go about building a championship contender?

Sam: blah blah blah blah

Vivek: So with that being said, he had a "process" with the 76ers, how would you, or would you apply the same thing here?

Sam: blah blah blah blah

Vivek: Who would you target to bring with you to help you achieve this? How many people do we need to have in our analytics and scouting department?

Sam: Blah blah blah blah

Then you decide to hire or move on depending on those blah blah blah. This isn't rocket astronomy. It's simple sport FO structure of the last 2 decades.

HInkie. But just can't see Dumars recommending him.

Don't understand the love for Scott Perry. Dude gets credit for the George Hill, Zbo, and Vince Carter signings. Credit for what? And the entire city wanted Fox, so he gets no credit for that either.

Dumars. Meh. Drummond, Monroe, Josh Smith.

The others? Have no idea.

#5
Adam Simon: Miami Heat VP of Operations

Simon has played an integral role in Miami drafting Tyler Herro, Bam Adebayo, Justise Winslow, Josh Richardson and KZ Okpala and acquiring undrafted players such as Derrick Jones, Jr., Duncan Robinson, Kendrick Nunn and Hassan Whiteside.

The majority of these players were lower draft pics and have become a Major force in the Miami Heat lineup.

Adam knows NBA talent. He would probably be a lot cheaper than any of the other names mentioned as candidates.

Scott Perry shouldn’t even be on the list Dumars too. The Knicks signed Randle, Portis, Marcus Morris, and Taj Gibson in one offseason that’s 4 power forwards in one month. I don’t want anyone from an organization dumb enough to do something like that

Someone from a winning franchise that isn't necessarily a big name would be the route I'd prefer the most. Interview 5+ candidates and not fall in love with the first person, perform proper research on each and every individual you have interest in and what that person excels in the most.

Must get someone with an eye for talent whether it’s with lottery picks or second round or undrafted guys.
What some of these organizations have done mining talent is what this organization desperately needs. Miami, Toronto, San Antonio, etc have been great at this. When we get our guy, maybe hire the Stockton GM as another voice who can train with our guy.

Then we need the correct coaching staff

Bobby Webster. He doesnt like the spotlight. Very much a team player but integral behind the Kawhi trade, finding Fred Van Vleet and several other low draft picks or undrafted FA. His personality is kind of like Petrie. Hes quiet, but gets stuff done. He reminds me of Petrie in that he finds talent from the free agency standpoint but his potential far exceeds Petrie, if he reaches it. This is because he consistently finds young talent others miss on. Hes super young but super smart and well connected. His personality screams "sacramento kings." Hes become my favorite for the job. Its much more difficult to add young talent to a team like the Raptors than the Kings who have had higher draft picks. Imagine someone hitting on high picks and undrafted fa and second round picks. He seems like a good choice to me and the right choice for what we need as a team.

Honestly I don’t know too much about other teams assistant gms or front office guys. But I think, like others mentioned, we need someone that has a good eye for talent. Whether it’s making the right choice when we have a good pick, or being able to find a diamond in the rough with 2nd rounders or undrafted. Sacramento is not a free agent destination so drafting is how we must rebuild. I honestly don’t care how many high draft picks we can accumulate if we don’t make the right picks.

IMHO, the way to go is to have an experienced VP of Basketball Operations be the top dog and have a young GM with an excellent eye for talent be the 2nd in command.

I don’t know much about the young GM candidates mentioned on this thread, but someone like Bobby Webster sounds like a good fit for the Kings. We have to be able to pick up talent in the mid first round and 2nd round and Toronto has done plenty of that over the last few years. He will never be the GM in Toronto, because Majiri is not going anywhere. Webster may be looking to assume a bigger role for a franchise and the Kings offer a good opportunity for him to prove himself.

As far as VP of Basketball (the top dog), I want someone with experience, someone with a proven winning record. I think the Kings Already have a very viable candidate in Joe Dumars, who can serve the senior role, similar to what Larry Bird did for Indiana. A VP with connections with other GMs and agents, can help swing trades and sign free agents, while the GM evaluates players for trades and the draft. I would want the VP and GM to work in unison to get both experience and a great talent evaluator in the FO.

I think that is where Vlade failed. He never got that experienced GM to help him, since he was so inexperienced. His mistakes were never corrected before he made them and we wound up trading an unprotected 1st rounder and bypassing Doncic in the draft. If he would of had a reliable, experienced GM To help him, he may have avoided those huge mistakes, but he didn’t.

I would like the Kings to have a real, experienced VP with a young, up and coming talent evaluator as GM. I think having 2 main cogs in the FO, instead of just one guy, will help the Kings avoid some costly mistakes, like what happened with Vlade.

I posted this info and it was moved over to personnel move section:

Jillian Adge made a podcast on this topic, link--> https://www.buzzsprout.com/1286339/5018066

Here are the prospects she has identified. They sound like what many are looking for:

It's clear. We are talking the Kings. If the Kings can somehow manage to obtain Sam Hinke's services then do it. He becomes the man in charge. Everyone else mentioned is second choice. He is brilliant at what he does.

All you guys who say, an eye for talent and draft better are missing the big picture. Everybody wants to find the best talent and find the hidden gem. And they all miss from time to time.

However, the Hinke rule is... it's a numbers game. What you need is multiple number of top #1 draft picks. That's how you increase your odds for success. Thus when you include the misses, you might very well find the gem.

Know the rules of the game. And maximize those rules to best situate yourself in a position to win.

Anybody else than Hinke, we are just going to move the deck chairs. With Hinke, everybody first gets off the boat.

This is the only current way to build for the Kings now. And to think taking on end of career players like Affallo, Ariza, Barnes, Zbo, came with no number 1's in our attempt to finish in the 8th seed. Awful. Don't do it again.

Come on fellas, think of the prize here. Don't just go for just the frosting.... oh we are a playoff team now...that's what ownership wants you to keep thinking...just two years away from being two years away even if it is the 8th seed (and we're out in one series).

There are haves and have nots. To be a have you need to go full Hinke and just wait. Owners will be hit in the box office...now you see the fear of ownership and why they REALLY won't take this path.

If we don't find a way to entice Hinke, I'm not supporting the boat float any longer.

I don't know enough about each of the potential candidates to make an informed choice. I just know the type of GM I don't want to see get the job. I think I've made that clear in some of the other threads.

I just hope the KINGS find the right guy. Someone that doesn't rely upon or need gimmicks. This franchise can't afford to purposely tank and hope their lottery fortunes change in the right draft.

Our fans won't stand for it. This franchise can't afford to bleed more money for several years while fans don't show up to see a G-League lineup. And the KINGS lottery fortunes for much of the 35 years they've been in town suggests it's a very unwise gamble anyway. Even more so now with changes to the lottery odds spreading things out more evenly among the bottom 3 or 4 teams.

Hire someone that really understands the game, has experience within an ORG and can identify talent. That type of person will be able to build a team like Geoff Petrie once did beginning 22 years ago.

Facts, we’re about to max Fox/Bagley soon the ceiling of this team is the 6th seed with those two as our 1 and 2. Get Hinkie in here and blow it up

I do not have the answers. But the honeymoon period for this ownership group is long over. I'm not sure the fans would tolerate years of suckitude for promises of tomorrow. Especially if it is intentional.

It is far easier to keep a current customer (fan) than it is to get them back after losing them. You are posting still in relatively positive terms, you still seem vested. I am not part of the paying customer base other than league pass. Is the local paying customer base like you, still vested? I have my doubts but am not local to really have a true feel.

This is being generous, being a 6th seed in the west means you're like a 47 win team. In order for us to get there, Bagley basically has to completely reverse course from what he's shown his first 2 years and become a star.

I can't imagine we finish above Utah, Dallas, Portland. The gap is gigantic. If we finish above Phoenix and Memphis I would call it a win. This is how the team look after 3 years of rebuilding.

If he is interested it would be OK to have Hinkie be ONE of the interviews IMO. If I was in charge the interview list would be long. I would interview every candidate that is out there I could get.

Then I would break the larger list down to a top group of less than ten but more than 5. Then have second interviews and come up with a top 3 or 4 and make my final selection from that group.

Then I would ask the new GM to do the same for director of scouting, lead analytics adviser, salary cap specialist and PR director.

In summation I would hire a new GM and allow him to build his own front office

I like this choice. I am envious of the Heat's leadership. Love their coach, who employs the most aggressive zone defensive schemes in the NBA and love their player identification and development--outside of Winslow, who never quite blossomed under them.

I think the kings did this when vlade was the vp and Brandon Williams was the assistant gm. I think it might be a too many cooks in the kitchen type situation. Especially if the guy with the eye for talent guy isn’t the top and can’t make the final say. I agree with you in the fact we also need a guy with experience and connections but maybe have him as an advisor role like jerry west or as the assistant like scott Perry was for us. In a perfect world the gm we choose would be a great talent evaluated AND have connections and experience but that person wouldn’t be looking for a job. So in agreement with you that we need to fill our front office with both but maybe switch roles of who has final say.

#28
We are? Based on what exactly..? Just because you draft a guy doesn't mean he gets an automatic max off his rookie deal.
Based of nba history and how GM’s work. He can get hurt again next year but if he plays 70 games in his contract year and gets anything above 17/8 some team will max him and we’ll match.

This is being generous, being a 6th seed in the west means you're like a 47 win team. In order for us to get there, Bagley basically has to completely reverse course from what he's shown his first 2 years and become a star.

What I'm thinking would work similar to what Indiana did with Larry Bird. Larry Bird was the face of the franchise as VP and Kevin Pritchard was the GM who did most of the day to day leg work and scouting. They seemed to work well with each other.

I think that Brandon Williams and Scott Perry both operated as "Assistant GMs", so I think the power structure was squarely with Vlade. They didn't seem to have much say in the final decisions.

As you mentioned, the Kings are not going to be able to get that ONE person that does both great scouting and has great NBA experience and acumen, so we need two guys. We have someone already with great experience in Dumars, now we need to find that great talent evaluator for GM.

That is why I think Dumars would work out as the head VP, since he has the experience and would have the connections to get things done. We should bring in a young and eager GM that strong suit is evaluating talent and finding gems in the draft. I'm hoping that the two of them will be able to work together and agree on most player personnel decisions and improve the Kings talent. I think a lot of times the VP would defer to the talent scouting GM in a lot of personnel cases, since that would be the GMs duties.
