Offseason Keep Boogie plan

Marcus Thornton? Good lord no. No, no, no, no, no...
That's what you focus on? The most insignificant part of my post? Really?

Thornton wouldn't even see the floor in my scenario. He's just a minimum salary shooter on the bench. Swap him out with any other insignificant scrub who can knock down some shots here & there if it makes you happy. Sheesh...

Yeah, cause I didn't have a problem with the rest of it. :)

He'll never be mistaken for a defensive stopper, but Anderson can hold his ground defensively. The idea with him (and it's a really good one) is we get to throw out a super effective 3-man big rotation with Cuz, WCS and Anderson where all 3 easily could play 30+ minutes and compliment each other's talents. He's not a Koufos, who's trying to defend on the perimeter after being under the rim his whole career.
O.K. I don't know much about Anderson's defense so this is reassuring. I know he can score, though.

Anderson is a solid defender. Not great, not terrible but he can guard in the post and on the perimeter reasonably well. And he is a pretty good rebounder for a stretch four. Maybe most importantly he has the ability to get into the blocks and score if teams try and go small. A stretch four that can't score inside when he needs to is just begging for teams to throw a SF on him (or even a SG in some cases), deny him the ball on the perimeter and then use the quickness advantage on the other end.

Boogie/Cauley-Stein and Anderson is a really nice three man rotation where all the guys compliment each other well. A couple role players behind them (Acy for energy/small ball defense etc, a big body like Koufos or Aldrich when needed) and I'd be happy. Well, happy with the frontcourt anyway.

Yeah, we're on the same page on Anderson. I've liked him since his days at Cal, where he was one of the best rebounders in the Pac 12. He's a very good post player. Fortunately, or unfortunately, he's such a good three point shooter that he seldom plays in the post. He would be the perfect compliment to Cousins, or WCS, depending on who he's on the floor with.

Anderson would provide the same scoring that Rudy Gay provides but in a different fashion. Rudy is at his best shooting over his man in the midrange to paint areas. He can hit the three, but it's not his bread and butter. He also isn't a catch and shoot player - he has the ability to put the ball on the floor and work himself into the position he wants for a shot. Over a third of Anderson's shots are catch and shoot opportunities. He's also taken nearly double the number of threes as Rudy in almost the same number of minutes played.

Now, Rudy Gay is a very solid rebounder as a SF, but fortunately, so is Omri Casspi. Rudy is better as an offensive rebounder (just like Cuz he puts back a number of his own misses due to his length and good hands) than Casspi but while Anderson is only a decent rebounder as a PF, he's surprising good on the offensive glass. I say surprising because you'd figure a guy that is largely out on the perimeter wouldn't be in position for those caroms, but Anderson is.

21% of Rudy's shots are three pointers. 39 % of Anderson's are. And 46% of Omri's are.

IF this team is going to build around Cousins and IF they choose to bring Rondo back then I think Rudy needs to be moved and a consistent outside threat has to be brought in at SG.

If Rudy could be dealt largely as a salary dump (lots of teams will have caproom but miss out on the top free agents) where the Kings get back a cheap role player or two and/or a draft pick then I could see a scenario where the Kings draft a guy like Hield with their selection, sign Anderson and roll out a lineup of:

Rondo
Hield (or FA/trade acquisition)
Casspi
Cauley-Stein
Cousins

With Anderson and (if he's not moved) Collison as the first guys off the bench.

It seems as if some Boston fans have an interest in Gay and using him off the bench as another scoring option. I was thinking we could maybe do an Olynyk/Mavs 1st Rounder for Gay trade, Belinelli/2nd rounder for cap space trade, and Koufos/#7 for Ariza/Beverley trade. Then you sign Bazemore & Anderson with the remaining cap space.

PG - Beverley / Collison / Curry
SG - Bazemore / McLemore / Valentine (Mavs Pick) / Anderson
SF - Ariza / Casspi / Butler
PF - Anderson / Cauley-Stein / Acy
C - Cousins / Olynyk

I'd like that roster a lot though I'd have Collison, Caaspi and Cauley Stein starting and Beverley, Ariza and Anderson coming off the bench.

I'm also a big fan of Denzel Valentine. He has less value on a team with Rondo because he wouldn't get the ball in his hands enough but with Collison that's a nice fit.

I don't know if Houston would make that deal and I think Atlanta matches offers for Bazemore. But they are the kind of moves and the types of players that I want to see around Cousins. The glaring issue is the lack of a #2 scorer and a guy who can create his own shot at the end of games.

I'd either start Collison/Cauley-Stein or Beverley/Anderson. You need one of Collison's or Anderson's scoring in the starting lineup with Cousins, and on second thought, I'd probably prefer Collison & Cauley-Stein starting.

However, there's no way I'm starting Casspi over Ariza. I really like to prioritize defense in the starting lineup, and Ariza is a much better defender and still a very capable 3pt shooter. Plus Casspi has a little bit more of a scoring mentality which would be nice coming off the bench. Also, Bazemore is a UFA so Atlanta matching isn't the end all, be all when it comes to where he will end up.

A starting lineup of Collison/Bazemore/Ariza/Cauley-Stein/Cousins has no weakness defensively (other than maybe bigger, stronger PGs) and then you can have Anderson & Casspi act as your bench scorers.

The lineup doesn't really have any scorers who can create their own shot (other than Cousins) which is a weakness of the roster, but this lineup would be a great defensive bunch who would scrap every night and provide more than enough spacing for Cousins to dominate like we know he can.

With that being said, the Kings would have $32 mil in cap space with Beverley, Bazemore, Valentine, Ariza, Cauley-Stein, Anderson, & Cousins under contract. We can try and use that money to bring on another scorer who can help share the load.

I've been pretty impressed with what Stan Van Gundy has been able to do in Detroit, and if i'm in charge, i think i attempt to make a team in the same mold, and surround Boogie with shooters next year. Either Gay or Rondo can and should stay, but not both. Rondo has been averaging an insane amount of assists this season, in an ill fitting system with ill fitting parts. If he's got Boogie and numerous shooters (think R. Anderson, Nic Batum, Harrison Barnes, Kent Bazemore, etc) i think he can be an excellent fit to the puzzle next year, especially since he's bonded and has the respect of Boogie.

On the other hand, keep Rudy, let Rondo walk, you have a legit #2 scorer who (in theory) could take over a game in Boogies absence - this clearly wasn't the case this year, but in theory, with the right coach/system, Rudy is a nice player to have. I just don't think he fits well with Rondo and Cuz, since all of them are weak outside scorers, and need the ball to be effective.

I know defense is a big issue right now, but i honestly feel like team D is more important than getting a "premier wing defender." Team D is all about being in the right system, and i think if we had a different coach this year, we wouldn't be stressing about our lack of D nearly as much as we all are right now. Not saying ONLY pick up offensive players in the offseason, but find players that fit the mold of being solid shooters 1st and foremost, *get the right coach/system that emphasizes D, and i think we'd be in a good place next year.

In summation - keep either one of Rudy or Rondo, fill all other slots with shooters to open up the lane for Boogie and balance the scoring, then get a coach and system that actually emphasizes D. And if that doesn't work, blow it the f*** up, and let's move on

Here's my issue with keeping Rudy - under Malone, Corbin and Karl he's been much worse in games without Cousins than with. For that matter it's why Rudy was so bad in Toronto. He was being asked to carry the offensive load and when he tries his efficiency plummets. Rudy Gay should be the third scorer on a good team AND I don't think he particularly compliments Boogie on offense.

So to me, Rudy should be traded regardless of whether Rondo is kept.

I definitely agree about surrounding Cuz with shooters (and defenders) though. In addition to Gay I'd deal McLemore and possibly Koufos and Collison (I like DC but I'd trade him if Rondo is resigned) to keep adding those types of players.

There wouldn't be a guy who could step up in Cousin's absence and be the primary scorer and get his own shot so they'd have to rely on a good offensive system, ball movement, energy and defense to win games when he's out. And that's something I'd love to see.

So all it takes is us completely ripping Danny Ainge in a trade for Smart AND Olynyk AND a pick and to convince two of the biggest FA's to sign in the nowheres land of the NBA to turn things around.
Hey I'm on board with it. That would be a heck of a team, if Beal could stay healthy most of the season. ;)
And just for the laughs we could field a triple tower lineup with Boogie, Kelly and Willie - play Barnes at SG and Smart at PG and we would be the biggest team in the league by far.
That what I would call big boy basketball:D
And than we would post up Smart with Willie waiting for the putback and Kelly, Barnes and Boggie spacing the floor - WHY? Because we can...

I picture Olynk as a shooting threat like a Ryan Anderson I guess. Thought he could shoot maybe mixed him up.

If we had Shaq at his prime we couldn't get Barnes and Beal? If Boogie is good enough to plan a strategy to keep him, then he better be able to attract someone besides Rondo. If we can't get anyone good to play with Cousins we may as well trade him since he has proven he can't make the playoffs even without better guys around him.

I'll skip pick from Boston and use our own. Collision and Gay for Smart and Olynk. Mostly I want to get rid of Gay. Overpay Beal and Barnes. Please. I'm sick of the lousy teams.

To clear this up. Even if I was trying to make a little fun of you, I didn't want to really mock your opinion.
If Vlade or any GM could pull this off in one offseason, I would be a very happy camper.
And yes I think Olynyk is a shooting threat - not Ryno but you have to guard him out there and he is crafty enough to drive after pumpfaking (actually reminds me a lot of Boogie only way less athletic, physical, dominant and hostile - Ok now that I think about it....no he doesn't remind me of Boogie :D). I like him a lot. Great, versatile big player, who can do anything on offense. And in my opinion Smart will be the leagues best defensive guard in 2-3 years, when his body holds up to his relentless playstyle.
So yes ship anything out not named Cousins and probably WCS to get these guys. I'm on board with it and will laugh at Danny Ainge if he goes for Gay and DC.
We all are sick of the lousy teams.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I'll be watching his career closely. I'll be interested to see how it all turns out. Maybe we can have this conversation again in a year or two ;)

I too struggle with this from time to time. However, I do always try to keep it in perspective (as crazy as some of my ideas may be). I tried to come up with an offseason scenario that I'd like with us just making 1 trade (well 2 trades, but trading Belinelli for cap space doesn't count :p).

  1. Marco Belinelli / 2016 Spurs' 2nd Rounder / 2018 Kings' 2nd rounder FOR Cap Space
  2. 2016 Kings' 1st Rounder / Kosta Koufos / Ben McLemore / Omri Casspi FOR 2017 Rocket's 1st Rounder (lottery protected) / Trevor Ariza / Patrick Beverley
This trade gives us $32.4 mil in cap space. With it, I would sign Ryan Anderson & Allen Crabbe/Courtney Lee. Then use the MLE on Cole Aldrich and sign Marcus Thornton to a minimum deal.

PG - Collison (26 min) / Beverley (22 min) / Curry
SG - Crabbe (28 min) / Ariza (16 min) / Beverley (4 min) / Thornton / Anderson
SF - Ariza (16 min) / Gay (32 min) / Butler
PF - Cauley-Stein (18 min) / Anderson (30 min) / Acy
C - Cousins (36 min) / Cauley-Stein (12 min) / Aldrich

Cousins - 36 min
Gay - 32 min
Ariza - 32 min
Cauley-Stein - 30 min
Anderson - 30 min
Crabbe - 28 min
Collison - 26 min
Beverley - 26 min

You've got shooting (Collison/Beverley/Crabbe/Ariza/Gay/Anderson/Cousins), defense (Collison/Beverley/Crabbe/Ariza/Cauley-Stein/Cousins), scoring (Collison/Gay/Anderson/Cousins), and probably one of the best if not the best bench in the league (Beverley/Gay/Anderson).
What do you think about instead of Ariza/Crabbe signing Lance Stephenson (assuming he opts out) and Lance Thomas to decent deals. Thomas is going to be 27 and is a excellent glue guy who improved his 3 point shooting and is a stud defender. Lance is 100% perfect for the 2nd unit where you let him do whatever he wants and can carry a team for stretches when you do. We would still need to sign a cheap sharp shooter (e.g. Morrow/Ellington/Budinger) that can start games and than let Sir Lance come in and take over when Cousins or Gay are on the bench.

That roster badly needs someone who can break down the D at will and Sir Lance is that guy while Lance Thomas is the 3 and D guy we are looking for who is in his athletic prime.

I am certainly not against trading Rudy to make us a better team. However, if Rudy is moved on, along the way we have to bring in a player who can create his own shot and carry the offensive load when Cousins is out. Otherwise you are a team build around a single player with no other alternatives to get a bucket when needed. Team can stop systems but stars rise to the top.

Thanks for sharing. Very good article. I hadn't thought about Stevenson and how the Pacers and Morway handled him. But this sounds very encouraging:
Morway is one of the few that can say they helped get the best out of Stephenson, who floundered with the Charlotte Hornets and Los Angeles Clippers before enjoying a slight resurrection with the Memphis Grizzlies over the last month.

The Pacers had a structure in place around Stephenson, who grew up without much of one, that helped him succeed on and off the court. Morway was one of the point men within the organization, having seen potential in the 40th overall pick.
And I also found this qoute on Stephenson's legal issues:
we're going to be very focused on making sure we have the right kind of guys in this franchise. Character is everything to us, character and culture are everything to us. We're going to make tough decisions, if it doesn't work out we won't have guys here, but we're also going to let young guys like that try to grow, try to develop, try to do the right things if we feel like they are making those efforts every day.
http://www.indycornrows.com/2010/12...-lance-stephensons-legal-troubles-future-with

Interesting. The more I read the more I hope we sign him. Sounds like a good FO person to have, especially if we're going to build around Cousins/Rondo. I wonder if that is the reasons why Vlade wants Morway over Bobby Marks?

Aren't there some trade rumors around Jimmy Butler maybe available for trade?

If he is, surely we throw just about everything we can to try and get him. Cousins-Butler duo with some WCS is a pretty darn good foundation to build around.

I think we would probably need to offer than WCS/Gay/Ben to have even a slight chance of getting Butler and they probably reject that deal
That's way too much. If Chicago rids itself of Butler, they want back youth and possibly draft picks, they would have no use for Gay. The talks would start and end with Trill and another young player.
