Regarding owing another 1st round draft pick, here's the thing - the Kings haven't got much better via the draft the past 9 years. So the question begs, do you want to continue trying to build that way or try something different? Sure, the Kings aren't likely to acquire a top tier FA, especially during the period of a losing culture. But, as we're now seeing, it's likely they can still improve by acquiring some role players and a former top tier talent who is largely available due to a tarnished rep (anybody remember CWebb?). While it remains to be seen whether Rondo still has what once made him special, it is a gamble worth taking.
I get the argument that the draft pick still owed to Chicago has hampered their ability to make some trades, and, now, the loss of another 1st rounder likely does the same. But that's just the thing ... they just made their big move(s) in order to try to improve now and not 2-3 years down the line. If they need to rely on having the draft pick they sent to Philly in order to make some type of future move, then it's already too late and we've lost Boogie - who is right now our once every 10-15 year franchise type player.
If we starting winning more games, maybe even earn a bottom 4 playoff seed, there a shot to keep Boogie and continue to build around him via FA and trades. The more you win, the easier it is to get FA's to take a flier on your franchise, especially if you have an established star player and a culture of winning. The Kings have an opportunity to do that with Cousins, but they need to get it started now, not in a couple years.
Of course, there is risk in anything you do. But the riskiest thing, IMO, is staying the status quo when it hasn't been working. Everybody knows the definition of insanity.
