Kings and free agency - part 2

Josh Smith now? Jesus Christ man.

As i saw someone note on Twitter, it's funny how even though Pete is gone, the same names are still popping up: Rondo, Smith, Monta, etc.

I guess Vlade is just another Vivek puppet whether he thinks so or not :(

Maybe. last year our problem was NOT the starting 5 it was the bench, they go a long way to fix that. So would Smith, Rondo, Beverly or a few other guys still out there. Koufos and Belinelli were only examples.
We'll see. I doubt that it's only the bench, that needs improvement. I think we need one major piece, to be competetive. If WCS exceeds all expectations, we may have it. But he is a rookie after all.

You don't buy a limo, a tux, and agree to chores so you can stay out late BEFORE you have a prom date that says yes.
Sounds about right ..... in a magic fairy tail world. And we do not live in it and definitely we cannot say it about the Kings. We are in a super tough position and we need to do something and I personally fully support Vlade because he finally did something. It was a bold move. Ok, it did not work out but he tried and he will try again. Yes, he did not fix this franchise overnight by signing Wes and Rondo and/or some other talent but we still have a cap space and he will go for another move. I like that someone is doing something for a change.

Kings is considered probably the worst franchise in all sports and the place nobody wants to be in. Yes, we are a small market and do not have glamour and cool vibe of some other places but we are not the worst NBA city. We are in trouble because we were really really bad for a long long time basketball wise and organization was run like a provincial circus. And of course, Woj basically sabotaged us this time by making it even worse in mass media (that snake just executed someone's plan to screw us even more to remove us from the game completely).

I cannot look inside Vlade's brains but for me the plan is:

Plan A - to get veteran players/immediate help to build a good team around DMC because he won't wait 5 more years for another rebuild.
So, we got a cap space to get that help.

Plan B - if we cannot execute Plan A this year or next year max, we might as well trade DMC and Gay and get some young talent and draft picks in return and we still have a cap room.

Lets also hope that Vlade will bring stability to the Kings and with a new beautiful arena coming up, we will finally look more attractive.

Well which players fit the bill of improved defense and playmaking?

I don't cringe at Smith.

Dude proved he could be a valuable piece last year in Houston and he quickly became their 3rd most important player in the playoffs. He's a good fit in Karl's system as a smaller PF who can still D up and run the floor. I think playing with his good buddy Rudy can reign him in also.

We revitalized Rudy, why not Smoove? Maybe the Kings are the destination for anti-analytic dudes to come and resurrect their careers.

Maybe it's time to start getting a Euro flavor to the roster. Fill in the back end of the roster with cheap Euro guys who can come in and contribute. Guys who look at Sacramento as an opportunity and not a place they don't want to be(Mathews, Monta, etc)

The trade blocked plan B because we don't control our picks for the 2016 or 2017 drafts. For business reasons, I didn't think the team would blow it up until after the Kings complete the first season in Golden One. They now have no basketball reasons to trade DMC for prospects before the 2017 draft.

I'd like Romdo or Beverly to sign with Sac.....one of these guys improves our roster quite a bit. Still need a vet SG but not crazy about the options out there.

Even is we overpay for say Bellinelli and Koufos at say 13 and 11 mil respectively, we CAN pay the the 24 mill and I would call it an upgrade from Nick and JT.
Wait, what? $11M for Koufos is insane; it's completely unconscionable. Is he better than Thompson? Sure. Is he twice as good as Thompson? He's not even close to being twice as good as Thompson. Are you suggesting that you're on board with paying twice as much money for a guy who's only about five percent better?

We'll get two or three more players, decent players, but who knows which and what. It is hard being patient. At least I don't waste any time guessing who it might be.

I'm behind it because it's really all we can hope for now and because we had to do something. I'm still interested to see if we maybe pick up a few guys and work something out with Denver or another team for a few pieces, who knows.

Agreed he was huge in The playoffs I'd take him for 7-8mill quite impressive.

Indeed, those numbers are nuts and I would hope and pray that Vlade could do better. My ONLY point was that given the guys we let go, the money we have and the talent available we could still CLEARLY improve the roster. Yes I would hope for a much better deal or much more talent than the hypothetical given.

Well I also think the national media is pushing those names plus their agents... The kings are probably just answering those calls

Now Darren is pissed. Congrats FO you just pissed of one of the most pro players out there, WHO WANTS TO BE HERE.

Why not go after someone like Corey Joseph? High character from winning program, would accept a backup role as hes 3rd in line in SA.

Plan B could be based on assets we acquire for DMC and Gay and possibly using our cap room. But there is a reason it is "B". Plan B - means we are losing DMC. Thats why Vlade is going for Plan A ... and everything is in.

I'll say one smart thing PDA did during free agency last year. He knew that we would only be able to sign mid level guys if any. He called Collison right away and signed him up. Collison was flattered by the immediate attention and was happy to get on board. Didn't even have to overpay. Any of these mid level guys we're looking at now...should have started there midnight July 1.

if the stars don't align.. lol we are really f'd. i don't know if this move was to appease cuz specifically but he's gotta be questioning the ownership even more after stripping the team of any future assets. we lebron'd this team but have nothing to show except capspace.

if cuz forces his way out i hope, no, i pray, we get a deal like minnesota did w/ kevin love. might get a denver melo deal if karl is still around.

Rondo is in a meeting with management as we speak, and yesterday we threw like 48mil at Ellis. So i think that's a little more than just answering a call. Vivek's fingerprints are all over this man, don't blame the media

There's nobody of quality left to sign. Anybody decent (Koufos, Beleneli, Brewer) can get the same money elsewhere. If we overpay we are just overpaying for mediocre role-players. Not anyone that's going to make us that much better. Even though we have cap room sometimes the best thing to do is not use it if you strike out. Would have been nice not to agree in principle to a trade giving away first round picks and a swap for this bullcrap.

You don't buy a limo, a tux, and agree to chores so you can stay out late BEFORE you have a prom date that says yes. Thank god it's Fourth of July weekend so people will just think I'm drinking for the festivities.
love this post. just clear capspace and HOPE we land some players!!! if all the high value targets are gone, settle for the sloppy seconds or thirds or gulp.. 4ths... put on the beer goggles and some of them look great!!!

It also helped that last year we had the perception of structure. Malone looked like the coach for the next 3-4 years, Cousins and Gay were Team USA bound, and the starting PG spot was his for the taking. Had a very good season sans the injuries and now we are looking to demote him.

It's pretty clear why we were so high on Wes Matthews. Perimeter shooting and defense without needing the ball all the time. The drop off now that he's gone is so significant they had to make him a huge offer. Yet when you consider state taxes and cost of living and such I doubt the difference between our offer and the Mav's was really even that big. Now you have to get/pay multiple guys to get the shooting + perimeter defense combo. Belinelli is probably available but then you would have to add Beverly or Rondo(can he still defend?). I hate Josh Smith's decision making on offense but he's solid on defense and won't cost a ton. Just think though, all that talk about Rondo and J. Smoove from last year might actually happen now and at about half the cost!

This has been a crazy off-season so far but how good has Vlade been given the hand he's been dealt? I fear its going to take him a while to quiet the storm he was hired into. I like what he's doing so far and you can't accuse him of being passive.
