Amick reporting that PDA is the one advocating for Karl, which is a somewhat surprising, or at least new information.

That leaves Mullin, or some lower level front office figure as the one against him. Unless it's Vivek who doesn't want Karl, which wouldn't really be a political issue considering he's the owner. He can do whatever he wants. If he doesn't want Karl, why would the Kings be talking to him?
Mullin just needs to hit the bricks. What the hell has that guy done as a FO guy to dictate anything ?

Dave referenced politics. I think the issue is some of the folks in the front office may not have the best relationship with Karl. COUGH MULLIN COUGH.

I don't think PDA would have an issue with Karl, or vice versa.
Per Voison this morning, the hangup is, wait for it, money!

What else?
The overriding factor at this point appears to be financial: Karl would command an annual salary upwards of $4 million, a major potential sticking point given that the Kings will continue to pay Malone through the 2015-16 season. Additionally, teams with more attractive rosters are expected to have coaching vacancies at the end of the year, and Karl, who maintains a high profile partly owing to his ESPN appearances, is thought to be heavily pursued.

"RENEW YOUR SEASON TICKETS OR ELSE WE'LL RE-SIGN TY CORBIN!" might actually be the best marketing strategy for the rest of the season.
You bring up an important and almost critical point. Yes you pay Karl lots of money which is a loss but you continue to put out crap on the court and you lose even more because no one will bother to come to games. This was already a worry because PDA himself started calling folks and realized that almost no one was renewing. And thus the change that seems likely to occur. Something had to give. Lose money to Karl and gain some back with STH and more fans or lose money period in all avenues.

I think PDA thinks his best chance of keeping his job is bringing in Karl, with whom he must have a decent relationship. If they bring in another heavyweight coach that he doesn't know, he knows his chances of survival diminish considerably. I don't care whether they bring in Karl or another heavyweight, PDA must go!

Ex-NBA coach George Karl has professed to the Kings that he would stay in his lane to just coach and that he is a huge DeMarcus Cousins fan.

This is a little concerning to me. And I'm not buying money being the hangup. Karl is telling the Kings everything they want to hear. He's been basically begging for this job for a month now. "I'll just coach! I love DMC!"

But he's holding out for more money?

Or Vivek is being a little tight with his cash.

I don't like that they are asking George to stay in his lane, or that it was implied that he had to make that clear. Really gives you an idea as to what kind of a power trip these guys are on.

*But at the very least it seems like they are recognizing their mistake.

Now it is down to nothing but spin and presentation.

No way the Kings would let it leak - that it got this close - and then let if fall to pacing pieces. It is a done deal for sure.

Can you imagine if they tease that Karl is maybe coming, and then somehow say "oops, sorry"? Then they can shove their pacing season tickets right up their pacing arse - and I KNOW I won't be the only one to say so.

It's his last go at coaching. He's got the wins and credentials to pretty much demand as high as he likes. And now with Orlando as competition the price can only go up. I don't think it's a coincidence that suddenly we are in Karl talks again after only a few days of reports of Orlando being interested. Maybe now we can't wait until summer.

I also think there is a huge power struggle in the FO right now. PDA vs Mullin. Vivek doesn't know who to listen to.

Yeah, if we don't sign Karl today we probably never will. ****.

I agree. I think the best success is to be had when the head coach IS the boss, and the GM essentially answers to him. Look at the NFL where both the Super Bowl coaches have this kind of pull. Look at Pop. Phil Jackson back in the day. These guys aren't employees of some nerd GM - they are the boss.

Kerr and fisher getting 5 million per season changed the landscape considerably.

He can, and should, get at least that. And the Kings have reached the point of desperation.

Karl has all the power.

I think more likely they are trying to make PDA look like a Karl advocate to save face. That's what I would do if I was Vivek. I don't want to fire my GM.... yet. This gets everyone moving forward - if it looks like D'Alessandro 'finally talked them into Karl'. But I think its all spin and BS from three partners in crime at the moment.

If that goes both ways, it's not a bad thing necessarily.

We've seen how well the FO coaching through Corbin has gone.

Not exactlymore money, more time (and yes more time does equal more money) To give him the benefit of the doubt on this one I think he may well want to make serious good run here; that means this year is pre-pre-season, next season is about wining and post season with an improved bench, and the season after is the time to be actually competitive at the highest levels. That is a 3 season contentment BEFORE he can show the results he wants so wanting a 4 or 5 year contract means he wants to be here to enjoy the fruits of his labor after paying his dues. So while for PDA and Ranidive it may be about the size of the contract, for Karl it is about more than money.

Vivek has the most incredible opportunity here. After the massive pace-up that is the Malone firing, he can still ride a float into Sleep Train - to rowdy applause - by hiring Karl. His STH will all renew (I will do it as soon as I see Karl on the sideline). The new arena is a guaranteed sell-out.

Even if he always had his heart set on Gentry or somebody else... it doesn't matter. He must strike while the iron is hot. I don't see how he lets this slip through his fingers.

What a lucky pace Vivek is, that he has the chance to wipe the slate clean with one contract!

Karl has to have the power in the organization. Everybody else can bring him coffee. If PDA sticks around, he can be his lackey until he gets replaced by a Karl nominee.

I took a small hiatus and chose to suffer from that which is the kings alone. I read the boards constantly and felt relief that I was not the only one who felt helpless. I have come to love the kings, but sometimes wondered was the torture worth it? I do not have as many years invested in the team as others on this board but this was the first team I chose to follow in the NBA and I'm proud to tell other Illinoisans that I'm a Kings Fan. I am waiting for the day that other teams and fans dread playing the Kings and if they hire Karl, I believe is one huge step to that dream becoming a reality.
