Viral meningitis is generally not serious, bacterial meningitis is what is super dangerous. Says the Internet.
I would have thought the opposite as bacteria can be treated with antibiotics and viri (?) cannot. Certainly you are correct. I'm a little puzzled as to the "why?" It'll give me something to do after the Niners' game.

Nope. Bacterial meningitis is the killer one. Thats the one that you will need to be on iv antibiotics for 2 to 3 weeks. Most viral meningitis are actually harmless and self resolved. And in reality you can only detect a few of them diagnostically

I know I'm wrong. I just need to understand it. It would be boring if I gave my theories. At least it's a bit of positivity to Boogie's situation if there can be anything positive about it.

I DID say Chubbs was correct.

Main reason is bacterial infection just wreck the immune system. early antibiotics is the key but it also depends on the body being able to mount a response in time until the antibiotics kick in

Okay, back to topic at hand ;) (Niners stuff moved to the NFL discussion thread in General forum)

OFFICIAL MEDIA PRESS RELEASE FROM SACRAMENTO KINGS:

DeMarcus Cousins Medical Update

SACRAMENTO, CA -- Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins has been diagnosed with viral meningitis, according to team physicians with Kaiser Permanente Sacramento.

Cousins’ symptoms are stable and a full recovery is expected, however the Kings medical staff recommends further rest before demands of an NBA schedule can be tolerated. He will continue to be monitored daily, with basketball-related activities expected to resume when his health allows.

Cousins is not expected to be in uniform for this week’s contests. Further updates on his playing status will be issued when they become available.

I can't wait to get off that cursed indian burial ground.

Wonder how DMC is going to play when he gets back. A couple weeks of being sick = losing muscle and weight. On top of that also not touching a basketball for a couple weeks. Really sucks.

I know this is much bigger than basketball and i hope he recovers fully. But i can't help but hope this doesn't kill his All-Star chances in a loaded western conference

The good thing would be our weak schedule. He misses the next 10 days we play Utah/la/Houston/det/okc I say we go 3-2. After 11 days Cousins comes back and we get bucks/lakers/GS I say that's 2-1 even with a 70% cousins. So after 3 games in 8 days we then play phx/ny/nets/celtics with a 80% Cousins i still say 3-1 at worst but id say 4-0. By January id hope he'd close to 100% and we get mn/det/okc and go 2-1. Overall while cousins gets to 100% i predict we go 11-4 and 21-14 overall sitting nicely between 8-9 seed.

The thing that's currently helping us is that the Suns, Hornets, and Thunder (in other words, every team we'd most likely be competing with for that 8th slot) are all also struggling right now.

It is to laugh.

You know, we've had a lot of bad things happen to this basketball team in the last decade, but as far as perfectly timed destruction oncourt? This stupid little bug might quite literally be the most perfectly timed mini-disaster since Webber blew his knee out. Only comparison I can think of off the top of my head was Reke's plantar fasciitis as a sophomore completely stopping his momentum and causing Petrie to panic and give up the plan.

But consider the possible downsides of this event. This was absolutely 100% THE critical moment for us as a franchise in at least half a decade.

-- we had survived a brutal starting schedule, were on the tips of the tongues of the national press
-- all of our big national TV games were clumped right here from late November to early December.
-- all star ballots are starting to be released
-- we were hitting one the cakiest parts of a schedule in recent Kings memory. It was absolutely a time to clean up.

What SHOULD have happened if we had cleaned up was we 1) would have still been in the playoff hunt at the All Star break; 2) would have cemented our status as national darlings and been hitting a big impressing the masses stride right as the national TV games came through; 3) would have guaranteed Boogie his breakthrough All Star slot. Everything was on the verge of changing.

Now the longtime Kings observer in me can see us teetering on the edge on losing all of it in a depressing crush. The losers in the Kings uniform right now blow some more easy games, Houston crushes them on national TV, our record falls to such a degree that in the West the playoffs become just some distant fantasy again. The national TV audiences don't see any change, same old losers with what's his name that big temper tantrum guy out. Who cares. Cuz comes back off the long layoff, isn't himself, has some fugly fatigue ridden games, combined with our losing record his All Star hopes dim again. And by New Years we are dead again and half the people reading this rant just drift away and won't be seen or heard from for another year.

Glad to see you're not losing your optimism.

I want Cousins to rest as long as he has to. I think at this point, the Kings won't even make the playoffs. It's not because our team sucks, but it's because the West is really really good this year. Even if we were above .500, that probably wouldn't even be good enough for 8th seed. I hope the Kings can continue to stay competitive. I don't think this year would be such a bad idea if we decided that we did want our 1st round pick. This team has started the season with great strides. However, I don't think we can continue without Cousins on our team. He's the soul and heart to the Kings.

All I hope is that Cousins can recover from it and takes as long as he needs.

While I agree Cousins getting sick was ill timed all hope is not lost. The Kings currently sit in the 9th spot in the Western Conference. OKC will come roaring back. But a couple of the teams ahead of the Kings will hit some rough patches and allow the Kings to gain on them. There are 62 games left after all:)

I also think Pete will make a trade or two to strengthen the bench. Who knows he may make another splash with a gutsy trade like he did when he brought in Rudy Gay.

It's viral meningitis. It's not too bad. He will be back in no time.
That was my experience with it at age 72. I was. Told at the time that 'viral' was usually not as bad as 'bacterial' meningitis. I was hospitalized for two days for tests and then recovered comfortably at home. I ertainly hope the disease treats him as well as it did me. Aside: I quit smoking at that time which was a big deal.

Tough news. Silver lining is that this team needs to learn to win w/o DMC. We also need to learn to hold a lead when he's not on the floor. If that kind of growth can come out of this stretch, that's a positive. The team is no longer populated by transient players. We have many core players on place (at least short term), so these kinds of challenges are no longer just purely negative. I can think of 5-7 guys (starters and bench) that fall into this category.

That and we won't have a first round pick unless we tank.
