Game 11
Sacramento Kings vs. New Orleans Pelicans

By Stephen Tetsu, who only weighs slightly less than Anthony Davis.

Well that’s certainly a good way to bounce back.

After a tough 1-3 road trip, the Sacramento Kings returned to their homecourt against the defending champion San Antonio Spurs, who, going completely against their established grain, did not rest their three old guys coming off of a back to back, in fact playing them for a significant portion of the game.

By the ten game mark of the season, certain trends begin to form and things start to solidify for the season. Therefore, going through an absolutely hellhole of an opening stretch 7-3 (officially 6-4 but what the hell do they know?) portends well for the subsequent 72 games of the season, so long as we can survive the rest of November without utterly pooing the bed.

Make no mistakes about it, the Spurs were actually trying to win this game. When Duncan, Leonard, Manu, and Tony Parker are all on the floor at the same time (and by on the floor, I mean actively playing and not lying on the hardwood getting stretched out) with Pop actually running plays from the sideline as opposed to frowning like a kid who just got grounded from the bench like he normally does, it’s hard to argue otherwise. And, despite all of this, our guys prevailed.

If you had told me before the season that we’d win a high stakes game against the Spurs with all their main guys actively participating (I’m reluctant to say that Tiago Splitter and Mario Belinelli would have made a significant difference in the outcome of the game) and wind up with a (temporarily) better record than them afterwards, I’d have asked you to lead me to your secret stash of hardcore barbiturates.

AND, they did it with Demarcus Cousins barely playing half the game.

Seriously, can you imagine how good this team would be if Demarcus somehow played more than half the game? In addition to the usual foul trouble, Boogie also had a taste of Manu's elbow in the third quarter, a maneuver that drew blood and sent Cuz to the locker room until the fourth quarter. And yet, in crunch time, with one of the best players of the last twenty years draped all over him, it was the Demarcus show, his skill, strength, power, and agility simply too much for geriatric Tim Duncan's brittle bones to handle.

Elsewhere, Darren Collison was absolutely clutch, his driving bucket late in the game the primary nail in the Spurs coffin. He also played lights out defense on Tony Parker in the fourth quarter, limiting his ability to drive and essentially forcing him to stick around on the perimeter.

Oh, and Rudy signed a team-friendly extension, so yay (Didn't do that great against Kawhi though).

Awards Time

Tony Delk Memorial Award- Manu Ginobili went crazy and was possibly the first guard to really give Ben McLemore trouble since Klay Thompson at the start of the season. He's still good but for the night he was vintage Manu.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim Award- Pretty much everyone on the Spurs not named Kawhi or Danny Green. Hell, Tim Duncan looked older than he actually is as he was getting ground into dust by Typhoon Boogie in the fourth quarter.

Luke Walton Vacuum Cleaner Award- Aron Baynes, who neither slowed down Demarcus or made up for his lack of defensive production on the offensive end. Because he was so terrible, Pop pretty much just played Tim Duncan for most of the second half.

Jason Hart Memorial Award- Not to be captain obvious here but the backup backcourt really really needs to start contributing something, anything really.

WTF Moment of the Game- The Memphis game. Still. Yes, I'm still angry about it.

The View from the Other Side

The following is taken from PoundtheRock.com

9:32 I kinda like Boogie. I’m ok with him wanting to outplay Tim, because it make TD turn it on more. As long as it’s just fierce competition and no one gets injured. I am hoping for a good show tonight between them!

11:47 DeMarcus is one of the few NBA bigs that I have a lot of respect for. Plays hard, is improving every year, and ACTUALLY HAS A POST GAME. Unlike softie Dwight Howard

6:33 Boogie is cool when he gets schooled by Father Time

7:02 go spurs go! sweep this road trip!

7:18 Sac will have a chip on their shoulder. San Antoino basically beat them with the second unit over the preseason. The kings used all their starters

7:25 Do we go down by 20 to mount dramatic comeback like everybody against sacto?

7:28 wow…that was a poor call. poor boogie…

7:34 Tech on Boogie? Why?

7:36 Manus bald spot will soon be a hair crown.

7:46 The kings really love those crappy shots….

7:50 I still hate Ryan Hollins.

7:55 Hey guys,

I have a newbie question. Sometimes it looks like Tim is giving people a little hipcheck when they go around his screens. Is that totally OK or is that something he gets away with because he keeps it "gentle"?

8:01 Looks like Landry just rushes into traffic.

8:05 So bad 2nd quarters continue.

8:06 Everyone’s playing by himself. How about moving around passing rather than these stagnant postups and one on ones.

8:08 They relaxed when Boogie went out of the game. Really an embarrassing second quarter.

8:08 So, I’m wondering if I should keep watching this game? Why should I care about the game if THEY don’t care about the game?

8:13 well that first half sucked more than the Cavs defense…do better oldies

8:17 Even if we lose 3-1 was better than I thought the Cali trip would go…

8:25 Demarcus Cousins has massive shoulders. Holy Carp.

8:30 now we are talking. Bonner is a HUGE improvement over Baynes. At least the spacing is better.

8:33 Dangit Bonner Cousins is running right through you

8:36 Duncan and Parker are really dragging their feet this game.

8:36 This game is crap. Kings getting away with flops and hacks and we’re getting called for every ticky tack little thing.

Grrrr.

8:39 We really should have taken off when they sat down Cousins bc of foul trouble but did not capitalize and just went to after to. Now its a big boy’s game. We better continue hitting the 3.

8:42 Gay with 12 pts on 13 shots. That is deadly efficient for him.

8:45 I can smell the fear in that arena all the way over here.

8:47 You can’t stop Omar casspi. Can only hope to contain.

8:48 Ant Davis vs. Cousins will be so fun in the next few years.

8:50 This game is like Spurs games from the Bogans era

8:54 Casspi is the best player on the floor. He’s practically unstoppable.

8:54 Really? I see some defense that’s just lack of effort, let’s not let friking Casspi play like an All-NBA member

8:57 Hell we did better with Cousins ON the floor

8:59 un-real…

I hate Casserole or whatever his unfortunate name is

9:00 Who can we trade to get casspi?

9:01 Praising SAC defense? That’s rich, I can give them the real reason: Spurs ain’t executing and missing open shots while SAC trying to break their arms every play without a call.

9:02 Duncan the Pharoah is gonna have to pull us outta yet another jam

9:03 Now we know casspi is on something. No one ever intercepts the Timmeh football passes.

9:04 Casspi god mode activated

9:06 Having Green switch on Cousins is probbbbbably not gonna work

9:08 If Cousins maturity level ever matches his talent…YIKES!

9:08 Kareem got nothing on Cuz

9:08 Christ, just foul Cousins hard. Let his stupid ass get a second Tech.

9:10 Ugh, they make our defense look so bad

9:12 Good lord…you can’t call that a foul. Cousins getting superstar calls OVER DUNCAN. Awful refs.

9:13 Gah, when did the kings start defending teams?

9:14 Why is Casspi so good defensively?

9:14 Cousins flopping now. Terrible.

9:16 Tony: I don’t always hit 3 pointers, but when I do, it’s in the 4th quarter when we desperately need it

9:16 Did Pop ask Leonard to be a ball hog? He’s taken too many shots, imo.

9:18 Cousins HAS improved alot.

9:19 Kings breaking down here

9:20 the classic Kings-Spurs game these past couple years. They play the Spurs well, hard defense or good offense and then break down in the 4th

9:20 Watching this game, i’d trade daye for boogie unless Anthony Davis is available

9:22 Cousins is having the best year of his life, but he’s nowhere near Anthony Davis.

9:26 Tony got owned in both courts.

9:28 Duncan for Cuz, straight up.

9:30 Shut up Cousins you guys slammed us all day

9:31 Don’t get why big 3 all played so many minutes…. It’s November.

9:32 Eff this game. They got some dubious calls and alot of bounces. We are missing Tiago and Patti. Eff you, Queens. Long live Charles Barkley

9:36 sigh…. well a 3-1 road trip isn’t exactly bad

9:36 What a game. I only caught the 4th quarter, but holy poop.

9:37 Sacramento fans think they just won the Championship. lol

9:38 If you told me 2 days ago that the Spurs would lose to the Kings but contribute to the downfall of Kobe….I’d take the loss to Kings without any regrets.

9:38 Really seems like a waste. Shouldve sat big3

9:51 The kings improve so much…

The West is a beast…in any case GO SPURS GO!

10:08 Boogie hates Chris Paul so that makes him alright in my book. The rest is gravy.

10:11 Ehhh they haven't beaten a healthy Spurs team
This game doesn’t prove anything, once Patty, Belinelli, & effing Splitter come back we’ll once again be the gold standard of the NBA.

10:53 An unhealthy Spurs team beat LAC & GSW back to back, so don’t use that weakazzz take to minimize the Kings’ victory.

1:40 Just curious, has Damarcus Cousins’ nickname always been Boogie? Somehow I’ve never heard that before, and then in the last day and a half I keep hearing Boogie this and Boogie that and it took me a while to figure out who they were even talking about. I know I’m oblivious to most non-SPUR players, but usually most of the good ones I’ve at least heard their nicknames.. Anyway, just wondering.

Tonight's Game
Hey! Two nationally televised games in a row! What is this, 2002?

Tonight, the Kings face yet another tough challenge in this young season, this time the relatively young and talented Pelicans of New Orleans, led of course by Muppet-faced, human Stretch Armstrong Anthony Davis. The national talking heads are already talking the game up as a match-up of the best big man in the game (Davis) and that crazy dude who I guess is good too (Demarcus), seemingly completely oblivious to the fact that, when they're faced off in the past, Demarcus has semi-routinely taken the Brow out behind the woodshed. Whereas Anthony Davis is an athletic freak with incredible length and defensive instincts pretty much unseen since prime Dikembe (and probably even earlier than that) representative of the "new" NBA, I suppose Boogie is a reflection of the old "extinct" NBA, a post bruiser unseen since Shaq got too fat to effectively run up and down a basketball court. And it just so happens that these two dudes are pretty much the two best big men in the NBA. And, not to put too much emphasis on this, both guys are still technically too young to rent a car.

Outside the marquee "match-up" (I'd expect the Pelicans to not put Anthony Davis on Demarcus too often, lest they want Boogie to simply back him down every possession), the Pelicans boast a long, physical guard/wingman group, led of course by bizarro Tyreke Evans (now able to hit threes at a consistent clip but seemingly physically incapable of scoring a lay-up) and former All-Star for the Sixers (when they weren't an abysmal black hole of suck) Jrue Holiday. They also have Eric Gordon, who has been playing so terribly that last year's Sucky MT/Superrookie Ben shooting guard rotation looks spectacular in comparison. Off the bench, the Pelicans bring in white guy on meth Luke Babbit, Doc Rivers' mediocre-at-basketball son Austin, with occasional token appearances by Kingsfans.com favorites Jimmer Fredette, who's shot poorly to start the year, and John Salmons, who, done with spawning season, has retired to the end of the bench to die a slow death on the banks of the American River.

The big men around Anthony Davis have all been picked to compliment the guy with certain tools and aspects he does not yet possess. Omer Asik is big and (sorta) strong, able to take on the other team's best big so Davis can focus on being a force of chaos across the entire court. He's also not bad at blocking shots either. Meanwhile, Ryan Anderson is an early favorite for the 6th man of the year award (sorry Isaiah), deadly from the perimeter, thus helping create space for Davis inside.

It's probably important to know that Asik missed yesterday's game against the Blazers with a back injury and thus might not be able to go tonight (or, if he does, may be less than 100% against the human battering ram that is Boogie Cousins). With Asik out, the Pelicans would be forced to rely on the first woman to play in the NBA, Alexis Ajinca (Don't check my facts, just believe me), who is both bad at basketball and stands about as much a chance of stopping Demarcus as I have a chance of becoming the Prime Minister of France.

The entire New Orleans squad is coming off of a tough Kings-esque loss to the Blazers last night, in which the team squandered a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter, Tyreke and Jrue heroballing their way to a loss. The game also exhibited where Anthony Davis still has room for growth: the end of the game where defenses tighten up and you just need to pin back your ears and make a play. While it didn't help that his guards weren't giving him the ball, Davis still lacks a go-to move to put pressure on his opponent, which isn't to say that he'll never have one, just that he doesn't have one yet.

Then again, I'd rather it never get to that point against the Pelicans tonight. A nice, calming, solid victory is all I require.

Match-ups

Predictions and Final Thoughts
This won't be an easy game. Nothing ever is in this November from Hell. Considering how the team was the butt of many jokes in the off-season, losing every game over the rest of the month would still probably leave us with a better record than expected by the pundits. But these Kings seem not to know better.

Feed the Boogie and watch him eat. Also, just keep making the Pelicans give Eric Gordon the ball.

My prediction? Kings win 94543 to 153, with Boogie setting a new scoring record in the first five minutes.

PS, This used to be the Pelicans' mascot, in case you forgot...

NEVER FORGET (not that you could)

Go Kings!

this should be a fun match up, as always. let's hope Rudy and JT both aren't out...if they are, need huge games from Collison, Casspi and Ben in order to help DeMarcus from being double teamed constantly. Let's see if we learned how to guard Tyreke...stay on Ryan Anderson!

I remember Timmy's hockey-style hipcheck, mentioned at 7:55, dating back to 2006 POs, when after meeting part of Duncan's backside Artest got into it with another Spur, which resulted in a technical.

If the Kings do lose this game, it would definitely be an upset. The Pelicans have a decent record (5-4), but they are 1-4 against teams with a .500 record or better, and they are on the second night of a back-to-back on the road, having blown a double-digit fourth quarter lead against the Blazers last night (sound familiar?).

That being said, I'm excited to watch Anthony Davis go against JT. Davis is a marvelously gifted player, and while JT has struggled against stretch 4s this year (like Dirk and the Morris twins), he's put the clamps down on some of the top traditional PFs (Griffin, Aldridge). AD can step out and hit midrange shots but he's best attacking the rim facing up or off a pick-and-roll, which should be right up JT's alley. AD is good at drawing fouls and JT is a notoriously bad fouler, though, so that should be something to watch.

I hope the Kings can play an even-keeled game like they did against the Spurs which included a tough, consistent effort on team defense. It's another one of those winnable/losible games. Hang in there and squeeze 'em at the end.

That thing apparently is supposed to represent the Baby Jesus. Hi freaky nightmare Baby Jesus?

Nah it's not baby jesus, it's the King Cake Baby. New Orleans has a thing called a "king cake" during Mardi Gras season that has a tiny plastic baby in it somewhere. If you get the slice of cake with the baby inside it, it's supposed to be good luck. That abomination is the mascot for King Cake and comes out of the depths of hell during Mardi Gras

After seeing that Brow-raising Kentucky lockerroom spanking vid, I'm not sure the correct answer might not be string bikini, but A.D. is in fact a beast. But he's also a skinny finesse beast, while ours is a fullgrown man beast. So I hope Cuz snaps him in two and tosses the leftover broken little toothpick limbs up into the crowd as souvenirs. :p

i am definitely a fan of their colors and logo. Name is kind of terrible though. But i heard they were considering some even worse ones

- New Orleans Pelicans
- New Orleans Rougarou
- New Orleans Mosquitos
- New Orleans Swamp Dogs
- New Orleans Bullsharks

those were the 5 up for consideration

Why do I have a feeling Salmons is gonna play like 10 mins but hit 3-4 threes? Like one last curse before he is out of the league.

We really need Rudy and Thompson to suit up tonight, I've been looking forward to this game for a long time, but with Asik and our fellas all in good shape. Hopefully we can see both teams at full strength later in the season, going to be a battle on the inside with everyone healthy.

I think we win with both Rudy and Thompson, I'm not sure on the outcome without them.

How can you NOT prefer Rougarou to Pelican? SMH

I always chuckle when I read comments that amount to 'I want to beat them at full strength, or it won't be as sweet,' as if they don't all count. As if we're the Spurs or the Bulls, and can afford to turn our nose up at wins.

JS: if he does, more power to him. A King I always respected. Go Kings! Beat the pants off AD and Reke!

Despite the fact that Asik could give Cousins problems, i think it could potentially hurt us if Asik doesn't play, because it would mean a lot of minutes for Ryan Anderson, who i could totally see torching us from 3. especially in his home town

....what the hell????

I would've preferred the name "The New Orleans Prawns"

I mean there isn't any team in the NBA named after something Nautical or from the sea.. prawns are some tough buggers

BEAT NEW ORLEANS!!

It's not always like that.

The Pelicans and Kings are two up and coming teams, I want to see the competition is all. I'm curious if the Pelicans are as tough on the inside as it appears. I want to see Cousins tested too.

I find basketball itself fascinating, not just the wins or loses.

If asik doesn't play anderson will be in foul trouble guarding boogie unless they want davis to get in foul trouble.

Gay should have a big game NO has no SF to put on him so hopefully he can get evans in foul trouble. I would put Ben on Evans and Gay on Gordon

It would get mocked and butchered by I like Rougarou. It has some real Nawlins vibe to it.

I don't think there was ever as fitting a team name at the New Orleans Jazz but that ship has sailed.

I'm kind of surprised they didn't push for the New Orleans Voodoo.

What surprised me wasn't so much the name (state bird and all that) but rather that they were able to turn such a ridiculous bird/name into such a scary/badass logo
Yeah, honestly I thought the name was goofy from the get go but that may be the coolest logo in the NBA right now. Working the fleur de lis in is what really makes it genius IMO.
