Can the Kings Protest?

Acknowledging their error would be enough for me for the simple reason it would point out that the replay center isn't the perfect solution, the officials aren't getting calls right, and if they're going to use multiple cameras with different views, etc. they need to figure out a way to do it properly or don't do it at all.
IMHO, in order to have a legitimate replay system, they need to allow a group of officials in New Jersey review and make a RULING on the play. The 3 BUFFOONS on the court already screwed up if it goes to replay. WHY ON EARTH would you contact New Jersey to provide the 3 Zebras with additional camera angles in order to overturn a call that THEY MADE. What incentive do the Game Refs have to overturn a ruling they have already made? Factor in the emotions of the game and this is the WORST possible way to run a review process. The NFL/MLB recognized this and the rulings are made in NY. Veteran Refs who are not caught up in the emotions of any particular game look at ALL the angles and they make a ruling. They don't let the same Refs who blew the call have a second chance to blow the call again !!!

i'm sure the kings can protest, but i'm not sure they should protest. demarcus cousins set the tone perfectly after last night's loss:

"the only thing tonight showed was the difference between a good team and a bad team."

that is the mark of a leader, to recognize when you beat yourself. bad teams lose these kinds of games more than good teams win them. yes, if we wanna be pedantic about it, like most of you i believe the kings should have won the game per the nba's rulebook. the refs screwed up, and it cost the kings a win. that said, a good team doesn't put themselves in a position to lose that particular game. more to the point, a good team doesn't surrender a 20+ point lead in two straight games...

these kings are learning how to become a good team. they don't know how to be one yet, but their superstar center is setting a good example. big cuz has never been the leader of a winning team before, yet here he is, taking responsibility for two tough losses. those losses came against experienced western conference playoff teams. they came on the road. it would be easy to be dismissive or defensive in such a situation, to say, "hey, we tried" or "hey, we got screwed," but that's not what demarcus does here; he owns up to the mistakes. his teammates (and the organization at large) should follow his lead. no need to appeal the loss. it's an 82-game season, and the kings must learn to fight through adversity in a brutally competitive conference. demarcus must find ways to stay on the court. and sometimes coach malone must trust demarcus to play through foul trouble. and the bench must contribute more consistently. and the front office must give some thought to bolstering the kings' size off of that bench...

5-1 was certainly something to celebrate, but this was always going to be a work in progress. the early season schedule is about as gnarly as it gets. the kings need to put these three straight losses behind them and get back to work. they can't get discouraged or defeated, because there are likely more losses up ahead in the coming weeks. this is simply not a kind month to the kings, with remaining games against the spurs, pelicans, bulls, timberwolves, pelicans again, rockets, spurs again, and then the grizzlies again to close out november. but next month, with christmas on the horizon, is replete with gifts. i count at least ten highly winnable games in december against the pacers, magic, jazz, lakers, pistons, thunder, bucks, lakers again, knicks, and celtics. if the kings can manage to stay at about .500 through this month, they should be able to scrap back up the standings next month...

I agree with your sentiment on what the players and coaches should do. They should move on and treat this as a loss and a learning experience.

That doesn't mean the front office can't file a protest. They should. So what if it gets denied, it's still appropriate to file a formal protest if you believe the evidence shows that what should have been a win was ruled a loss.

I agree that it's not about "what ifs". I wish sports were not like this, but my point is that's how things tend to go. The team who makes the efficient play to close the game, will tend to get the benefit of the doubt. It hurts when you're on the other end, but vice versa if you're the ones who just pulled off a "miracle" play
That's what I'm saying. We did make a 'great' play. Hollins tip was a great defensive play. Shouldn't we be given the benefit of the doubt? The horrendous defense of Thompson and the great tip happened when the game was over.

Now even if they got this win, does this mean the Kings should be satisfied with the way they played? Hell no. They should be embarrassed. But they don't need a win or loss to tell them what they need to work on. They have Malone to do that.

I believe the NBA should use the replay system to see that JASON THOMPSON is BRAIN DEAD and therefore grant the Kings a roster exemption because of his stupidity. I believe the evidence could not be more clear on the replay that JT has the lowest BBIQ in the entire NBA. Id be willing to BET he was told to protect the rim and yet he was literally setting a SCREEN AT THE FOUL LINE for the Griz player that Rudy Gay could not get around !!! We should be able to waive JT without impact to the salary cap.

I'm just saying.... It could not be more clear....

As usual, well said Padrino.

And I wholeheartedly agree that that is the best way for Cousins, and the team, to relate to this. I don't see it a mutually exclusive to the FO filing a protest. But the guys on the team can't take that view. I'm SURE Malone and Cousins and all the vets are on the same page about this, which is one reason I don't have that feeling of deep, endless despair about this loss: I do think it can be taken in a constructive context now that we have on court and head coaching leadership. That kind of thing makes all the difference. But it is great to hear Cousins speak in this way. Looks like Cousins learning ability is not limited to post moves and defensive rotations. And you notice, when he speaks, it's with a tone of authority that an only come from someone who's been through adversity himself. When he says "we need to learn how to fight through and overcome adversity", it has weight to it, because it's not lip service, he's been through that himself. Blake Griffin could never do this, since his NBA career has been paved with gold by the refs. Folks, we have ourselves a leader.

Just to clarify this for some of you that seems to be confused. It is ok to catch and shoot with 0.3 left. Less than that, it has to be a tip. The Kings FO cannot protest that it was purely a tip in situation. The NBA would laugh and throw a rule book at them. What they can protest is whether the ball was tipped by Hollins or that the game clock guy did not start the clock in a reasonable manner.

OFFICIAL NBA RULE
"The game clock and shot clock must show :00.3 or more in order for a player to secure possession of the ball on a rebound or throw-in to attempt a field goal. Instant replay shall be utilized if the basket is successful on this type of play and the game clock runs to 0:00 or the shot clock expires on a made basket and the officials are not reasonably certain that the ball was released prior to the expiration of the shot clock. The only type of field goal which may be scored if the game clock and shot clock are at :00.2 or :00.1 is a “tip-in” or “high lob.”"

With that said, I was heated all night and this morning about the game. YES, I do want the NBA to overturn the call. I feel like the game clock guy was obviously doing some home cooking. But I also hate the fact that we let another large lead slip away. At least in the Dallas game, we already loss it all in the 3rd. In this game, we had a 15 point lead going into the 4th.

WTH happen to the guys? Why was the coach ineffective in getting his team to make the adjustments when the Griz were making their run? Why did Ben not make his FTs?

Why didn't we play ZONE and leave Cousins in the paint as patrol? We didn't need to play man to man or try to follow their players too closely. There is only 0.3 left and you know the guy that gets the ball has to shoot. There won't be any passes. Spread out in a zone, you can at least contest any shot. At the end, this is all just part of growing up as a team and learning how to win, hopefully. It at least shows we have improved tremedously and we can actually compete at a high level with even good teams. There will be more games like this where we blow leads or lose because of poor late game execution. This is a young team. But we have a high chance to make the playoffs as a lower seed (6, 7 or 8). Lets all hang in there and let the players take it out on the Spurs on Sat.

what irks me the most is the fact that they have the new replay studio. all those angles and time to really look at it and they still treated it like they didn't even have that. It seems like the replay studio is MERELY there to speed up the time, NOT to make the call the most accurate it can be.

This is the biggest point taken from this whole situation.
If you watched the kings broadcast you could hear the head dufus telling new jersey that "I can see air between the ball and his hand". He said it like 5 times. They didn't even look at the clock stuck on .3.
and he kept refering to hollins as rudy gay.

All the people saying the Kings deserve to lose because they played so bad at the end: If a team deserves to lose a game because of a bad stretch of basketball during the game, then i guess the NBA should have ended this game and the Dallas game at the end of the first quarter and awarded us wins then right? Because Dallas and Memphis sure played terrible at the beginning of those games. Guess they didn't deserve to win

Fact is no matter how bad we played, the score when the clock hit 0.000 should have been 110-109 Kings win
Exactly.

I find the reactions to this peculiar ending to be quite an interesting expose of Kings fans' psyches.
More to the point, sports is not real life; to paraphrase Mae West, 'deserve' has nothing to do with it.

Why should they? at this point it really doesn't matter...there was just so many things that didn't go right on that last play that one doesn't know where to start. This is strictly on the team...right now they are mentally weak and fold when any adversity presents itself. You learn from this and move on, it's too early in the season to be putting your heads into the sand.

**** this crap. The rotation on the ball CLEARLY CHANGED. **** this game. A day later, and the NBA STILL sucks. F U NBA. These calls need to be determined by the replay officials in New Jersey. **** these zebras.

If you're talking about what I said when you say "Why should they," then my answer is "because they got the ruling wrong, and it cost the Kings the game."

Everything else you said, I agree with.

You could not be further from the truth. They didn't fold and they didn't give up. Hollins TIPPED THE FREAKING BALL, which should have ended the game right there. Anything that happened subsequent to that point is immaterial.

The fact they gave up a significant lead but continued to fight for the win is HUGE. You would not have seen that last year. You would have seen guys with slumping shoulders, a defeated look on their faces, etc. That hasn't happened.

I'm sorry, but some of you really need a dose of reality. Right now, this team is FIGHTING - they just don't have all the weapons they need and they don't always use the weapons they do have correctly, but that will come. They will undoubtedly learn from this - but is it the lesson we want them to learn? Do all you can at the very end but keep in mind the replay center may take it all away? That's what irritates me the most. The replay center should be the final arbiter AND the one that gets it right. The evidence has mounted all day that they did not get it right and they need to fix that.

To be fair I believe it was the ref that took full control of the replay capability. Watching the game after the play occurred you could hear the ref shouting out orders to the replay center. The ref was insistent that he only view the sideline angle and then went on to not uphold the rule that dictates that .3 seconds requires a tipped shot attempt.

If anyone is aware of a media outlet/program that even entertained that the wrong call was made I would love to hear it.

This is not the rule anymore! You can catch and shoot if there is .3 ore more on the clock in the NBA!

They did fold...they did not give up but they did fold. How can you say otherwise? Cousins did not fold in the end, the team in the end allows a lay up out of all things instead of just letting them try their chances from the outside.

Yes you can but you still have to get the shot off in 0.3 seconds. That means the shot clock has to start when the player receives the ball. I don't think that happened.

I expected us to lose the last two games. We were playing good teams on their court. We lost. Let's move on.
