We're seeing more evidence this year of why I said last year that I'd consider trading Landry to get Josh Smith but not Jason Thompson.
Yes, JT whines to the refs. Yes, JT complains about touches and offensive opportunities. Yes, JT seemingly wants out of Sacramento. And yes, JT is often maddening with his ineffectiveness when he has the ball in the low block.
None of that trumps this fact - last season (and presumably this one as well) Jason Thompson provided gritty, physical defense against the opposing team's best big so Cousins wouldn't have to. Landry can't do that. Josh Smith certainly can't do that. They can defend CERTAIN guys but would you want either manning up Dwight Howard without help? Because Thompson did exactly that. JT has done a fantastic job on Blake Griffin, LaMarcus Aldridge and Kenneth Faried. Josh Smith brings athleticism, shot blocking, passing and some (often poor) outside shooting. Landry has historically been a dependable scorer off the bench. Neither is a physical defender.
At this point I don't think I'd trade anybody for Josh Smith given how good the Kings have looked and how poor Smith has looked, but even if the Kings were 0-5 I'd still say trading away Thompson for JSmoove would be a huge mistake.
