Training camp roster/Media Day (merged)

To me it sounds like JT is calling out/accusing Cousins of hogging rebounds to stat pad. He also goes on a monologue of how he wants to average a double double and exactly how he will score his points. Kind of weird from a guy you expect to just be a hustle guy. Mentions how aside from he and Cousins every other position has been a carousel. That is true, but weirdly honest in a time where every other player is giving phoned in answers(listen to any training camp interview around the league and they all sound the same). This guy still seems super pissed, I doubt he makes it through this season with us.
I guess we all hear/see what we want to see, myself included. I didn't hear him calling out Cousins rather that there was someone who is wanting a double-double just like himself. I thought his answers were good and I thought Jason had a very good attitude. The only times he seemed testy was on a complete of the loaded questions where he questioned the question.

“He’s just been good all around,” Rivers said. “But his defensive pressure has been phenomenal. It’s been game-changing at times. So, it’s been great.”

You have to consider the source. This is Doc rivers last year. Your source is someone that watched every game he played when he was in Dallas.
You notice Doc says his pall pressure is great. Thats completely different from containing your man in the halfcourt or a team defense awareness. Its different coming off the bench for 25 minutes and being able to expend all your energy pressuring opposing PG's. Assuming he play 32-35 minutes a game for us, his ball hounding will be less frequent.

Well, I guess it's settled then. Sounds like JT is now the complete package. Everyone else should just pack and go home.:p Seriously, it doesn't hurt if he can be consistent from out there. I was amazed when I saw JT on media day. He looks like he's about 10 or 15 pounds lighter than last year. He's always in great shape, but now he almost looks like a SF. One would have to think it makes him quicker, and perhaps more explosive around the basket. Maybe!?
Positionless basketball, remember?:)

I think one thing that is certain is that JT believes he should be more involved in the offense. He has more than once brought up how he and Hawes were once looked to as the future frontcourt of the team, and I interpret that as him still wanting to play a bigger role on the team. And to a certain extent, that isn't unreasonable. JT isn't Reggie Evans. He's proven that he can get you 8-10 points a night, and frankly I'm glad that he's identified an easy way for him to contribute on offense which suggests that he's not going to be demanding the ball for shots or anything like that. You can't blame a guy for trying to find ways to help the team while still being a contributing option, especially the longest tenured guy on the team. I also don't think he was implying that Cousins was a stat padder, but rather that Cousins is out there looking to rebound the ball far more than Brad Miller was (and thank goodness!). I mean ... for something like rebounding it's rarely ever a case where guys literally fight over the rebound. JT probably just meant that Cousins would really go after every rebound in his vicinity.
That's for certain. I'd like to know, though, when was the last time JT talked about getting more involved in the offense when it comes to him making some assists.

Kings coach Michael Malone called Jason Thompson and Reggie Evans the early MVP's of training camp thus far

Good for those guys. We need some production from the 4 this year. But im not sure what this says about the rest of our team...

As far as JT, i really feel for the guy. he's been stuck in this crapstorm for his whole career. I hope he gets to experience some success soon, whether it's here on somewhere else

I don't think JT is super pissed, I just think he's telling it like it is from his point of view. Basically, I think he would like to included while on the floor. Which he wasn't last year. While he didn't do much offensively, he also didn't touch the ball very much. He averaged a whooping 6 shots a game. However I would point out to JT that when Evans started along side Cousins, he pulled down more rebounds per minute than JT did. So I'm not buying his excuse. Frankly, I'm more interested in how a player plays than what they say. As for rebounding, if you can get me player that's capable of padding his stats by pulling down double digit boards, then please do. If it was that easy, everyone would be doing it.

No way Collison plays 32+ mpg on this team, given the strength of his backup Sessions. You can pencil Sessions in for at least 20-24 mpg at the PG spot, so I say Collison gets 24-28 mpg as the starting PG. Sessions may even end up getting more minutes than Collison by playing part-time at the SG spot in smaller lineups.

The one prerequisite for either taking a shot, or making an assist is, you have to have the ball in your hands. JT seldom touched the ball last season, and as I just pointed out, he averaged a paltry 6 shot attempts a game, and, he shot over 50% from the floor, so when he did shoot the ball, he was efficient. I've never had a problem with JT's offense, or his rebounding. My problem has been his defense. He's actually a pretty good man to man defender away from the basket. Not so much under the basket, but he has improved. Where he's weak is in team defense. The doesn't defend the pick and roll well, nor does he rotate to defend the basket at times. Too many times last season when Cousins left his man to stop the ball, JT failed to rotate to Cousins man. I firmly believe that's why he lost his job to Evans, who isn't as quick as JT, but he knows how to play team defense.

Did you not read my post? I pointed out he'll get you steals and pressure the ball. In LA with DA anchoring the defense, he was in one of the best defensive situations a guy like Collison could have found himself.

But there's more to defense than pressuring the ball out top. I know some don't get that and don't understand all that goes into team defense, dealing with screens, switches, rotations, what have you, but you'll just have to sit back and learn. It'll be an eye-opening experience without a DA back there cleaning everything up.

Collison has been a hot/cold, inconsistent defender for the large majority of his career. A brief stint in LA on a veteran team with one of the best defensive coaches in the league and DA protecting the rim, is the exception, not the norm.

Pardon me, craptown??? ..... give me a break and go somewhere else.

I think part of the strategy behind finding two competent point guards is that it allows them to expend more energy pressuring the ball. I don't think Collison will play that many minutes. I say maybe 24-28 for Collison, 20-24 for Sessions.

Just a passing comment about JT: From all reports, he's come into camp in excellent shape and totally serious about taking his game to the next level. He's working hard and I cannot see ANY indication that he's unhappy, ready to be traded, etc. I think either DMC or Rudy (or both) may have actually reached out to him and told him what they need/expect of him. That could easily be all he needed. It's not like any of our other guys ever did anything like that.

I fully expect Jason to come out and play his best ball ever. He has the ability.

At the risk of ruffling a few feathers (who, me?), I suspect that many people who are reading "unhappiness," "friction" or "beef" in Thompson's comments are injecting their own anti-Thompson bias into his words.

I have been similarly encouraged by the reports about him and his own interview. Seems like he's just trying to adapt his game to better contribute to the team, recognising that things are different now than they were before, while at the same time also appeasing his own desire to be more involved. I see nothing wrong with that.

Those seem to be conclusions that are 'jumped to', in this day and age where continued honesty from pro athletes is not something that happens much at all.

I have a feeling Vivek respects JT even more, for laying all the cards out on the table

"I know I'm not perfect and I probably never will be but I aiming to be the best leader I can be for this team."

And that, fellow Kings fans, is just about the best thing we could possibly hear from our franchise center. He gets it. It's a different, more confident and more focused DMC than we've ever seen. The rest of the league better watch out.
