Rudy is getting shots up but he's hasn't gotten the ball much where he operate best. Part is no Boogie, part is on him not getting better position, part is also the poor sets we're running and IT giving it to him in poor spots at times. IT sure hasn't created easy looks for Rudy tonight for the most part.
This isn't blaming IT for everything though. Part of course is on Rudy. He hasn't played well. I just asked how much is it the PG's responsibility to set up the #1 option more often where he operates best? Comparing his role to that of a Rubio or Kyrie doesn't make sense. Kyrie IS the #1 option. Rubio is not a top 2 option and instead repeatedly and consistently looks to set his top options up. If a PG as good as CP3 regularly looks to set up his teammates and create easy looks for them, then why is it too much to ask IT to do the same? I don't see that as blaming him for everything though. All I'm blaming him for in this back and forth is not getting Rudy better looks at times. Rudy deserves blame too.
My point with those guys is that the wins aren't there for those guards either, yet Kyrie is an All-Star, everyone loves Rubio, and Jrue Holiday, etc. They would never be blames for their teams struggles, but here? forget about it. It's Thomas. (Not saying that is your opinion, but if there was some poll asking which player is holding us back from winning the most, I'd bet Thomas would win that poll)
But see, where all these conversations really break down is right at this point, where WE, as outsiders, have no idea what Thomas is 'supposed' to do. Or what Malone wants him to do. I saw him pass the ball to Gay quite a bit tonight, albeit not in GREAT scoring positions, but Rudy wasn't moving towards those positions either. So what offense is that? Is that Thomas not creating, or Malone calling for Gay to get the ball on the perimeter with a near full shot clock? And Rudy was going up against Iggy tonight. Not exactly easy for him.
I think IT does create SOME looks. Im not going to lie to anyone and tell them he is a great playmaker, but I think the answer to that lies somewhere in the middle of both opinions. He certainly is more of a scorer than a passer, but that is who he is. PDA knows that, you know that, I know that, everyone here should know that by now. And plenty of teams have that kind of point guard. Curry is that kind of point guard, and I'm not comparing the two, really, just making the point that lead guards that are offense/scoring focused DO exist in starting roles around the league.
And I liked IT as a starter in that role BEFORE the Gay deal. That was when I was making most of my Thomas noise. I thought Thomas and Cousins could coexist in the same offense, but Gay was brought it and created the shot crunch that we have right now.
So I will surrender the point that he isn't the best fit for this roster, but I will still defend him as a player. I think he's good. And I think some of the comments lobbed at him here are misguided.
