yes!

Now there is finally something everybody SHOULD be excited about...ironically of course there are people who will be more excited about Shaq renaming the city after himself than us wrapping up a potential franchise player for years to come. But this is flat out good news and if Cousins responds this is a defining moment.

The inevitable happened, with that out of the way...now we can focus on bettering DeMarcus as a teammate and player along with growing together with his team. Heres hoping to management giving the guy some help down the line, and soon hopefully...

wow, 62mil seems like a steal. wasn't it rumored that we were going to give him around 80mil?

@WojYahooNBA: To be accurate: DeMarcus Cousins' extension with the Kings is a four year, $62 million max deal, sources tell Y!

Too many holes in his game for me to feel good about it yet - defense, consistency, not being petulant on/off floor, running the floor, shooting a normal % for his position etc. etc. etc... not the biggest fan of his, nor do I think he has earned it, but as a Kings fan I'll look the other way and just support the franchise and hope the majority is right on this one

the $80 mil was max if he had gotten the 5th year. Apparently we only went 4 years at max, so I guess that is our protection against this not working.

Jason Jones tweeted that it was Cousins who wanted 4 over 5. So i guess more accurately this is DMC's protection against this not working...

Jason Jones @mr_jasonjones

Sources said Cousins preferred a 4 yr deal over a 5 year deal.

ah ok. Not an ideal sentiment, but a predictable one.

Ok then, Dan Fegan has given us an ultimatum. We have 5 years to build a contender around Cousins or risk him taking his talents to...someplace. Ready. Set. Go! The clock is ticking.

Wow! Looks like I'll be on his butt for another 4 years (unless he gets traded of course)! In all honesty, I think this is the right move because even if he continues his disruptive behavior he'll still be a tradable asset even with this contract.

I don't think he'll be tradeable at max level if it doesn't pan out... He's not exceptionally tradeable now due to his reputation and the weak points of his game. It will be albatross for that stretch if it doesn't work out

Joe Johnson was traded. A completely washed up Gerald Wallace was traded. Rudy Gay. Emeka Okafor.

Point is having 1-2 years at $15/per for a young guy as talented as him is not a problem.

This is a good move. Does anyone really think he was going to be let go after this season? Better to lock him up now and start working with him distraction-free.

I won't make any predictions for how I'll feel about this in 4 years. But this is the right move, because he's our only franchise player and this gives us the freedom to build a system and a team around him.

I will add this. All the excuses are done for DeMarcus. I expect nothing less than franchise level production on a nightly basis and him embracing the team leader role.

I think it's more putting Cousins in line for a 3rd big contract (if he can get there). Saving a year now, might get him an extra year in a later deal

Nice. I suppose 4 years is a decent compromise (counting this year, that's five more he's under contract), and Cousins' next free agency is at the right time for us. In principle we have three more years in STA and then we want to be contending when the new arena opens. Two years of contention and a rosy future, and Cousins should be happy enough to stick around for his second big contract.

I wonder how the money is spread. Could be $15.5M across the board, but more likely something like $14/15/16/17M. Still looks to me like the first splash year we've got in the FA market is going to be summer of '15...we'll have to plan carefully until then.

About bloody time! The best move this ownership group made so far. DeMarcus also being smart and backing himself in. In 5 years time, he will be a 28 year old big man in his prime which means another max contract beckons at a higher salary.

We have 5 years to build a real contender around him!

Your letting your emotions about Cousins get in the way of your brain. Whether you want to admit it or not, Cousins, despite his reputation, is considered one of the best young big's in the game. There's always a team willing to bet they can harness his talent. The Kings have already had teams calling them about trading Cuz. However, I don't think that's going to happen anyway. I think this is going to be his breakout year. Talent like his doesn't come around very often. Were lucky to have have him. And now, we have him for 5 more seasons.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. It sets Cousins for a second max contract before he's thirty years old, and still in his prime. Hopefully it will be with the Kings. I'm hopeful that Cousins can become the Tim Duncan of our team, and perhaps never play for another team in his career.
