Thoughts on McCallum

#31
With all our money on Cousins we need a pass first point guard to run the offense. Make sure we're setting up properly, and also getting Cuz the ball down low when he needs it. McCallum, SO FAR, has not fit that bill. It also means that if he's starting by 2014 that we've let go of Vasquez, essentially letting go of Tyreke for nothing. Hopefully not the case. McCallum will be great coming in off the bench for scoring. But the Kings are in desperate need of someone to run the offense. Not simply play well in it.

Don't worry! People will realise this soon. Currently majority of the board is suffering from a "new toy syndrome"! ;)
Not me. I'm suffering from the realization that my parents got my new toy at Walmart and not Macy's like they told me.

Outside of the fact that the Kings are still in Sacramento, an accomplishment somewhat short of miraculous, much has happened that has been very disappointing. VERY DISAPPOINTING. I will not list them but my signature lists one move that is a head scratcher. The positive side may not take effect for a few years as the FO is spectacular. Vivek has surrounded himself with real talent and I don't just mean PDA and Malone as these two still have question marks. It's everyone else. I'm just going to have to be patient.

As to people who fantasize how the individual part s will fit together nicely, let them dream. Sometimes that's all we have as Kings Fans. Reality may strike all too soon, ie, McLemore.

Yes of course. Sorry i dont share the opinion of the majority in here. This board is becoming really hostile to users with different view right now.
Not everyone. Unfortunately, passions sometimes get the better of perfectly sane people.

There are lots of folks on both sides of virtually every issue. It's just that, for some reason, the optimists are generally shouted down. I'm still optimistic and I'm still excited to see what our new group of players will do. I think Vasquez could be a very good player for us, and I'll wait to see what happens before passing judgment.

SACRAMENTO ---- The Sacramento Kings today signed second-round draft pick Ray McCallum to a contract, according to Kings General Manager Pete D’Alessandro. Sacramento selected McCallum with the 36th-overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. Per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

yeah, thought it was pretty clear if we didn't somebody would.

I'm not sure he has actually been as good as its being made out, but he's consistently aggressive and dynamic...for better or worse. The gap between he and McLemore is pretty huge -- kid can create his own shot and really competes on both ends at all times. Question is can he create for anybody else, and just how good a shooter is he going to be? Its clear he deserves a shot, but he's not been efficient in summer league and if he doesn't improve on that you could see him end up a 5ppg on 38% shooting reserve combo guard if he doesn't have another gear. Other thing is he hasn't shown any ability to stretch the floor with a three point shot, so I have an open question if we actually got better swapping him in for Toney Douglas. In any case, signing him to find out was the right thing to do.

Ray McCallum has officially signed his contract with the Kings. Terms not disclosed, but word is he got 3-years guaranteed

Vasquez can create for himself too and there is no need to have more then 2-3 iso players on a team, if you manage to run a successful system. Kings have a very good low-post-player, 1 guard, who can create his own shot at will and 1 guard, who is very good to create for himself or others off the P&R. Not too much to worry about offensively, if Mclemore, Thornton and Salmons can hit open shots next season. The major concern is the defense.
He can be 6'6, have heart and compete, see the floor and have a decent enough jumper, but if that defense doesn't become average I'm looking ahead to Thomas/McCallum or someone else there long term

indeed!! if true, it seems like an unusual commitment to a second-round pick who has, as of yet, proven nothing. while mccallum won't cost much, after the carl landry signing it's become clear to me that this new regime and i have differing views about what constitutes an "asset." what's with all the long-term deals??

If true, this would be one of the moves that I agreed with
You've been pretty high on him and I'm genuinely curious as to why? He's looked ok to me but not better than any of the other guards we currently have or than a lot of the other 3rd guard talents I've seen on other summer league rosters.

Three years is crazy long for a second rounder that hasn't played a minute in the NBA. If it works out it could turn into one of those Parsons type deals where we are getting a ton of value for a player. If it doesn't we've latched onto three years after we already gave Landry FOUR.

i hated the pick and i hate the 3 year contract....hes getting so much hype for no reason...hes a drive first, drive second PG...and hes not even good at it..fire pda please

Yeah my appreciation isn't really based on summer league play, as I think the team as a whole has been disappointing. Just loved him as a collegiant prospect and was glad we selected him in the 2nd round and think he can be at a minimum an end of the bench guy

Low risk high reward type of move if the 3 year deal is ~1MM year. Players like Arenas and Michael Redd signed two year deals, then got size able contracts after that. Arenas demanded so much he went to Washington.

Maybe but the number of guys that make it out of the second round make guaranteeing 3 years an unnecessary bet, especially with the number of guys we have ahead of him.

Yeah, the guaranteed part is a bit strange. Not sure why we coudn't just make it non guaranteed like most 2nd round contracts are to give ourselves an out in case something goes wrong.

Three years IS a lot, but given the dearth of players with the ability to attack the rim, it could be worse. Do we know if the last year is a team option? I haven't seen the terms of the contract. If the money is right, I don't care about the years. Small contracts can always be used as filler if necessary.

Everyone needs to remember, it was Jason Jones who reported. So I am assuming we traded him to Vancouver Expansion Team for a 2020 and 2024 2nd round pick.

If he is a bust what are we out? >1 mill a season over 3 and we can always pack him up in Reno (just to watch him die) BUT if the spark he showed in Vegas translates into actual NBA play then we not only have bargain basement talent but we can actually trade Isiah while his stock is high or move Jimmer and still keep a solid 3rd PG. I think the move is smart. I am still unconvinced about McCallum but it's like making a small bet on the roulette wheel. Even if your odds are not great the potential reward vs the size of the bet makes it a lot less stupid than than it looks.

keep in mind the Kings own the Reno Bighorns now... we have a minor league system for prospects or injury replacement players.

I didn't want to draft a point guard. I didn't really want to draft a shooting guard either. That said, McCallum has played better than I expected in summer league. This is a reasonably strong signing, aside from the 3 year length. He plays like Drew Bledsoe. Good athlete, good defense, strong handles and a good finish at the rim, but not a floor general so far. At worst, he is a good trade chip for teams looking to acquire cheap young assets. I'd look for him to make IT and/or Jimmer expendable.

I keep hoping to read of trades to clear up some of the guard and power forward logjam. Are there really no teams out there that want Chuck Hayes or Jimmer?

Three years flies directly, and I do mean directly in the face of the occasional, and I do mean occasional, talk of cap flexibility. Its completely unnecessary.

The way you normally do it is 2 + an option year, like IT has. What's a 2nd round pick going to do? Say no when he's getting offered an NBA contract?

Whiteside got 3 years. It's a great deal if he's a rotation guy. It's only a bad dead if he's out of the league next year.

Well, shows we have a ton of confidence in the kid and not a whole lot of confidence in IT and Jimmer. I think this also sets him up to have a developmental year in Reno and then still have him for 2 years at a dirt-cheap price as our back-up PG

Which is why they could of still given him three years, but with the last two years non guaranteed or with a team option. The length is okay but if it is guaranteed and for whatever reason Ray does not work out, then we still have his salary on the books. And although it will be small, every penny is going to start to matter once we max out Cousins. Of course JJ could have just reported it wrong but we'll see.
