With the apparent reports of Dallas shopping Shawn Marion for capspace...

Ken Berger ‏@KBergCBS
Mavs believe they can move Shawn Marion and/or Vince Carter to create cap room, but are waiting it out for now, league source says.

..and our need for a legit 3, I decided to try this out.

KINGS IN: Luol Deng/Brendan Haywood/CJ Watson
KINGS OUT: Marcus Thornton/Jimmer Fredette/Hassan Whiteside/Francisco Garcia

BULLS IN: Shawn Marion/Marcus Thornton/Dominique Jones
BULLS OUT: Luol Deng/Ronnie Brewer/CJ Watson

MAVS IN: Ronnie Brewer/Jimmer Fredette/Hassan Whiteside/Francisco Garcia
MAVS OUT: Shawn Marion/Brendan Haywood/Dominique Jones

Why for KINGS: Well, obviously we need a 3. Deng can be our starting 3 for the foreseeable future. However, it does cost us MT and developmental projects in Jimmer and Hassan. However, to win some you have to lose some. IMO - if we resign JT, then our 3-big rotation is set for the future. CJ comes in as our backup PG and IMO is an upgrade. Bad thing is we do acquire Haywood's massive contract from Dallas but at the same time, rid ourselves of Cisco's contract.

Why for BULLS: Well, Marion and MT would be interesting to pair next to Rose and they also get a young 2 in Jones for the future. IMO - Marion and MT are a nice little offense-defense combo to put next to Rose. Thornton also brings way more offensive power from their 2 spot. Watson is expendable with the drafting of Teague.

Why for MAVS: Simple - they gain the capspace they wanted without losing too much talent. They gain Brewer to replace Marion and gain two young developmental projects in Hassan and Jimmer. They take Cisco from us since we took Haywood's contract from them.

Kings rotation, assuming we resign JT and TWill:

DMC/Haywood/Hayes
JT/Rob
Deng/FA Signing?/Salmons/Honeycutt/Outlaw
Reke/TWill
IT/Watson

Thoughts on the trade? Also, what is everyone's thoughts on Hassan being used as a trade piece? How long do we wait for him to develop? Could we use him to strengthen our lineup elsewhere especially with a frontline of DMC/JT/ROB?

I wouldn't do that trade. I think it is too early to give up on Jimmer and Whiteside, and I'm not crazy about getting rid of Thorton. As for getting Hayward and Watson, I don't see either helping u out very much. And Deng is supposed to have surgery this off-season, but is waiting until the Olympics are over (meaning he will miss the beginning of the season.

Don't think Mavs would do that as if I'm reading it correctly, they only gain ~3M in cap room. Pretty sure they want to unload Haywood/Marion without taking 13.5M back. My guess is they look to trade those two separately, each with a team who could absorb more. Maybe if Cisco agreed to a buyout.

I like Deng but am not a fan of Heywood. Type of player we need, but seems to me to be too hot and cold and has motivation issues.

You guys wouldn't do that? We'd be an instant playoff team. Deng is as solid as it gets. Haywood is a good backup C and CJ Watson is a very good bench player. I don't know how the money and all that would work out but the players themselves would be a godsend.

If the Mavs want to sign Deron, they need to dump salaries. We should be able to get Marion for pretty much nothing if we want him. Something like the trade that brought Beasley to Minny.

Frankly with Robinson also on board I think Marion might now be a better fit at SF, and he won't cost us nearly so much either.

How about Deng or Iguodala straight up for MT? In terms of stats they are more comparable than their reputation would suggest. Thornton's PER is on par with Iguodala and higher than Deng, and his scoring and FT% are significantly better than both. He isn't as good on the boards, but with DMC/Trob/JT this isn't a real issue. MT is also several years younger and is less experienced and banged up, so he could be a good investment to a team that's looking for an efficient 2 (not sure if that's high on the wishlist for these teams).

In any case, packaging another player or two (not named DMC/Trob/Tyreke/IT/JT) is an easy option to sweeten the deal and make it happen.
