All This Talk About Needing Guards And Coach Whiz Has Giuliana Waiting For An Oppurtunity That Ithink She Will Never Get Now!!:(does He Not Know What He Has!she Is A Tremendous Point Guard And Can Shooy Better Than Anyone On This Team.so I Ask,what Is The Problem????they Needed Some Offense Last Year And They Had Her On The Bench!now This Year, they're Bringing Guards From Everywhere That Don't Even Compare To Her!!!

don't evaluate kristen by the 10.8 ppg

I have to respond to sleepypee's comment about "bringing in a 10ppg player and ...ignoring Mendiola." First of all, I too was wondering what gives with Mendiola and Whiz with bringing in shooters like Powell, the Chinese pair, and the 50% 3pt shooter from the 3td round when you already have Mendiola, who did 20+ in college. However, Kristen is not being brought in as a shooter. She has been said to have "Jason Kidd-like" impact on a game, makes everyone else better. That is what we need. She can get steals and get the fast break stuff going. However, when needed, she can penetrate and drain jumpers too. A consumate team player, she just deferred to a couple other All-American types on the scoring.

I am wondering what the final roster will look like though. There just is not enough room for all this talent. I forget, are we allowed to carry 11+ one IL player? I sure count a lot more than that that. Mediola, and Ruthie look like they are on the outside looking in. I figure Kristen is being brought in to eventually set TP up as trade bait(next year?). Should be interesting.

giuliana is a point guard

giuliana is a true point guard with more talent than anyone i have ever seen.you wanna talk about jason-kidd like game well she has magic like game and she's been playing this position all her life!!!she makes everyone better and she has the smoothest jump shot in the game!!!she is a powerful rebounder and yet i haven't seen anyone that can hang!!!this guard that got drafted is good but i'm sorry, she can not hang with giuliana!!!and that is a fact!!!i'm real sick and tired for giuliana paying the price for something that happened with her family.she has nothing to do with it and she should be treated right!!!!she is a professional basketball player that needs to be givin a chance!!!just remember, she was pac-10 player of the year just like powell was and powell got drafted and she didn't!!!go figure!!!dee wheeler got drafted and giuliana didn't!!!kristin mann got drafted and giuliana didn't and she busted kristen mann for 55 pionts in high school!!!like i said, there is an injustice going on and i'm tired of it!!!

I know the story about her brothers, but never considered that had any impact on the way she is treated. You sound like you know a lot more than I do about the mendiola story. I am not sure I want to know anymore. Hopefully she can show on the floor of what I saw for 4 years when she was in the Pac10. That should do it for her.

I agree...

I would agree accept for one thing. I like her at the 2 guard. I think her jumper is too deadly to have her distributing the ball at this level. I think her very presence on the floor could have made a difference in the play-offs last year.
I have said it... Posted it... and sent smoke signals about it.

I think Giuliana should be fine. Miao isn't big enough to compete, don't know enough about the Aussie girl, But there are 11 positions available 2 IR, 13 in total. The fact that the Chinese girls will have to leave mid-season was reason enough for me not to be all that impressed with them.

As much as it hurts me to say... I think Ruthie will be a salary Cap casualty. I really like the pick up from Rutgers which doesn't boad well for Maiga. With Powell and/or Fei Fei in the mix that isn't good.

And here is the big plus with Giuliana...
If you get in a real pinch and need 3 pt shooters on the floor you can run Haynie at the point, Kara at 2, Giuliana at 3, Powell at 4, and the post of choice at 5.

If you need to get really big Giuliana can run the point, Powell can go 2 Brunson 3 DeMya at 4 and Yo at the 5. She brings too much versitility for her not to make the team.

The scoring potential is here now.

As for her paying the price for her family's mistakes?
Well that would be a real shame if people are still holding that against her. It was bad enough that GM's were scared to take her, because of it. Their Loss Our Gain. I have met and really like her family. Wonderful and supportive people. Not a whole lot of families that would come out in force to suppot the team when their kid isn't playing. But they did.

And yeah there are a few people that she should have gone ahead of in the draft including the girl we drafted in the 3rd round. So I feel you pain on this issue. Again.. Been screaming it all year.
But most people who have met her in the press or other wise have really liked her and I think this will be something people will finally let go of.

Blaming her family issues as reason for her "not being given a chance" just does not make sense. Giuliana was doubtful from the start to make it in the pros because of her lack of foot speed. However, the Monarchs not only gave her a chance, they paid her and kept her on the injured reserve (as a place holder) so that they could work with her and try to make her pro material.

Giuliana will be in camp, along with all these other guards. If she is as good as you say, then she will make the team while others are sent home. Personally, I think the Monarchs Organizational has seen real pro potential in Giuliana, and they have given her every chance. I think she will (and should) make the final roster again this year. We shall see.

to slow my you know what!!!!

you know what's funny when someone says she's to slow????they eat their words!!!they been saying that for how long and she's always proven them wrong!all i'm asking for is a chance, let her play some minutes and she will show the world that she belongs in this league!!!if she is slow then why has she always led her teams in steals and defensive stops????answer that one!!!!has there been anyone who has stopped her yet???she has put up tremendous numbers in high school, college, and now in europe, only because she has been givin the chance!!!trust me she is better than most people think!!!!sure she's white and not as athletic as most black women but she is definately smarter than your average player.she will adjust in most cases on defense and on offense forget about it ,she is a brain!!!that is something this league lacks!!!!

Been there!!!

Still needed a scorer Last year. Had people who could have helped her on Defense. There is a slow a** point guard in Phoenix and She is the Rookie of the Year.
Speed is relative.
The question that we want answered once and for all is can she play.
I think she can.

I had that same feeling during draft day that Ruthie and Guiliana were on the bubble. I don't want to see Mendiola running the point here, so the fact that he drafted Haynie is immaterial in my book. I saw nothing from what I saw Mendiola do last year that convinced me she can get the ball up court against the speed and pressure defense that she'll see at this level. That's one of the major reasons why I do not want to see Lawson running the point here. That, and the fact that if they are running the point, neither one of them is shooting as much as they you'd want them to.

The pick up of Newton was what put Ruthie on the bubble - a solid defender who can spot you a little offense now and then. She's got some quicks too, so she's not going have the same role as Mendiola does in her defensive assignments.

Where Mendiola looked to be in trouble was in the pick up of O'Neill. That's where I see the battle for a roster spot for Mendiola. If O'Neill is quicker and a better defender than Mendiola is in camp, then he's going to go with the 3rd rounder. They seem to be a wash everywhere else statistically. Buescher's out there too lurking as a used to be known quantity.

We still don't know if he's going to make a trade between now and opening day. He seemed to suggest on Saturday that he was still working the phones.

Sleepypee, I disagree. This is not about race or family issues. And the WNBA bone pile is full of players who were big stars in high school and/or college and couldn't cut it in the WNBA. Offensive prowess is only one factor a coach will look for. I know one issue last season was Mendiola's conditioning. She worked very hard on that during the season and was in much better shape at the end. I also think it was very smart to go overseas and work on her game in the off season. I agree she deserves more playing time, and I would like to see her get some more minutes at the #2. But I agree with 6th that training camp is where everyone will have their chance to show their stuff, and if her stuff is good enough, she will be on the team. And if it's really good, she'll get more minutes. It's as simple as that.

1. Playing time is earned not given. I like Mendiola. But who are you going to play her over. If the Monarchs perimeter players are in order: Ticha, Lawson, Maiga, Powell....who is Mendiola going to bump. I believe that she will have plenty opportunity to compete in training camp.

2. I can not believe the played out "white girl can't run or jump" nonsense is a factor here. She is not as athletic or quick as Ticha, Sue Bird, the little point guard form the Liberty and most white perimeter players in this league. So don't insult my intelligence trying to make this out as a white verse black thing.

Sleepypee, where are you from if you do not mind me asking.

if she can't run or jump?????that's funny!!!!

if she can't run or jump then how does she do it????how does she produce the kinda numbers she does???explain that one, will you???everyone you mentioned is slow!! but they make it up with their brains!!!!see,in basketball you need a brain and that is where giuliana comes in just like the girls you mentioned, she is a brain on the court and she can really do anything on the court!!!she will prove to the world if she is givin the chance that she will be an all-star in this league!!!why don't you go to one of the practices and see for yourself how she kicks everyone's butt in practice????especially lawson and ticha!!!!ticha should be traded once in for all.her time has passed!!!it's time for a new point guard to come and show her stuff!!i've been to a couple of practices last year and when giuliana ran the point, everything ran smoothly compared to ticha or lawson!!!just go watch, will you and then come talk to me!!!!

Oh, puhleeze. Mendiola is popular around here. However, she has yet to do anything at the pro level to indicate that she is ready to take over point guard duties from a wily veteran like Ticha. There is a reason that Ticha is always mentioned as one of the premier point guards in the WNBA.

I know you think Mendiola is God's gift to women's basketball, but if she were as good as you say, she would already be running the point for the Monarchs. Your bias is showing and that is okay, just don't be upset if everyone is not ready to jump on the bandwagon. Patience! If Mendiola is that good she will earn a spot. If not, she won't. And, it will solely be based on talent.....nothing else.

All i have to say is sit back and watch what happens!!!!ticha used to be good but i think her time has to come to an end, obviously!!she doesn't do anything anymore!!!one more thing, first of all if giuliana was givin the chance to run the point or let alone anytime to play then her game would speak for itself but she hasn't been givin the chance.coach whiz began to give her a chance but she became ill and had to deal with that.so i don't get what you are trying to say when you say she should be playin the point if she was that good????she is that good and yes we are being patient, that's why i am excited for this year cause she is all healthy and stronger than ever!!!:)

: cough: mendihomer : cough:

Sorry frog in my throat;) :p

I can see your definately a Mendi fan but there are alot better players then her out there. I have to say you take being a player fan to the extreme. being a team fan myself, I want what is best for the Monarchs. sad to say that so far Mendi hasn't showed that she deserves to be a contributor to this Monarch squad. Thres are better players out thre who can run alot faster, jump higher shoot better, pass better, make better decisions, and thus just have more talent. WNBA players are damn good. They are the best in the world. And there are better players on this team better then Mendi.

I've seen the story that ESPN did last year on her and showed her families situation but in the world of pro sports that means a hill of beans. She was lucky last year to be able to stay on the team.

We will see how much she has improved Her numbers in Greece really didnt imprss me that much at all. I hope she can help this team. We will find out soon enough.

Little girl how old are you?

Hey ease up on the name ridiculing folks...
Just because sleepypee an apparent fan, does not make he/she childlike.

I am a huge Giulinana fan, but I want what is best for the team too. Evidently I need to change my screen name cause all these folks are coming out of the woodwork and jumping on my bandwangon.

I think Giuliana was a better option during the play-offs. Much better than Lady Grooms. Yes she was sick the first half of the season. And contrary to popular believe I was told she came in underweight because of a surgury she had and needed to build her strength back up. Clearly Sleepypee has more insight on this. And has had the opportunity to view practices, where I have heard she did fairly well the last 1/2 of the season. But again that is what I heard from several sources.

I am very pleased with the draft choices. I think Haynie would be an excellent addition to this ball club. Newton is an interesing and athletic pick up and i think O'Neill is good too. Giuliana will indeed be pushed in Camp but hell she was a long shot in camp last year. If she makes this team she will make it is a 2 guard or a 3pt specialist... if the have those.

I still have her beating out the Chinese girl, simply because of the time they will have to be away. Wilson will prove to be an interesting competition, but concievably this team could carry 5 guards 2 wings and 4 post. Plus 2 on IR. Either way I have her making the team.

Replacing Ticha at the point is a stretch... Even for me. I have not been the most staunch supporter for Ticha but not because of my Love to Giuliana. I feel she is over priced. However with these off-season moves I am fine with Ticha for at least one more year.

So I think at the end of the day, we will see when camp open how competitive she is. I will think she will surprise alot of folks.

But that is my 2 cents...

BTW I was dead serious about changing my screen name. can I chage it without opening a new Kingsfan account?

I'm sorry. I do not have a problem being a fan of a particular player. But it is clear just based on how the comments are worded, the format of the text and the thought process itself is not comes across very jumbled. The whole black and white thing kind of set me off.

As I said before, Mendiola will have plenty opportunity to compete. The Monarchs training camp roster is straight up brutal as far as competion. She is going to have her hands full. I am a season ticket holder and I thought that last year Mendiola could have contributed. But this year will be a challenge for her because I feel that the Monarchs have shored up their perimeter game with the acquisition of Powell and the promotion of Kara Lawson into the starting lineup, time is going to be at a premium. There is no way in hell that Mendiola will replace Ticha Penichero as the starting point gurad. IMHO.

Luv13fan, it you really want to change your account name, you will need to send a PM to Jeremy (our owner/administrator). Let him know what you want and, when he gets time, he will change it.

Trying to keep neutral in this whole thing, no doubt Giuliana has a lot of talent, she wouldn't have been Pac-10 POY or made this team if she wasn't. She has the advantage of being on this team and knowing the players, coaching staff, and the system that we play. And as said before, there will be plenty of competition for her and others coming into camp. I have faith that Whiz will be able to determine the best 11-13 players for this team to win a championship (which is what we all want ultimately, right?). If she makes the team, then she'll have the opportunity to show off her game, if she doesn't we'll wish her the best.

All right folks-let's keep these discussions about a player's merits neutral and calm. This forum is not a rah-rah cheering section for any one player. Criticism is allowed, so please do not jump down anyone's throats for doing so. Please express your opinions civilly and calmly.
