Who's in Charge?

Does anyone else feel that the Maloof's are making most of these decisions? Petrie said that the Musselman decision was up to the Maloof's. I hard for me to believe that Petrie would go after player like Artest or AI (I'm not saying Artest was not a good pickup). If this is the case I think that the Maloofs need to sit back and let Petrie make these big decisions. Does anyone else feel this way?

This is a mixed bag. So far as it would appear the Maloofs have only meddled in the big stuff, and the results have been a mixture if that is true. Webber (boo) Artest (yay) and then the coach, where they were almsot certainly the ones calling for Adelman's dismissal, but reports indicated they were then going to do the even bigger stupid and hire thier WNBA coach until Geoff stepped in and urged them to look a little deeper -- result being Muss.

Given that Geoff's backside is rapidly expanding and taking on the shape of his office chair, I'm not sure whether more Maloofs or less is the answer. And I can construct scenarios either way. In one, the Maloofs who have come right out and said that they don't beleive in rebuilding, are basically shrotcircuiting Geoff's rebilding plan with impulsive and shortsighted decisions. In the other, Geoff, who got fired from Portland for similar paralysis as they began to sink in the early 90's, really has deluded himself about the state of our players/team, is basically a soft GM in love with skills that mimicked his own as a player, and basically needed to be overridden or things would be worse. Turth is I'm not terribly enamored with either party's decisionmaking at this point.

My guess is that the Maloofs work with Geoff and are involved in the big moves but let Geoff bring in all the Salmons, Potapenko trade, draft choice type decisions. Only micromanage when its going to be a big splash. The problem with the Maloofs meddling is that if they had a choice of

Bibby for unproven young talent + draft picks
or
Bibby + pieces for Iverson

they are going to jump all over #2 even if that might not be the best decision. It just seems like they are having a lot of fun when they can bring in the big names.

I'd like to point out that Petrie and the Maloofs may also have slightly different motivations. Maloofs being that of making money, or making a name for themselves and getting exposure to further that goal, and Petrie to win a champoinship.

i was actually going to put this, if you did not before me. being a part-time dork from outside the states, it would have fitted me perfectly.

It's a collaborative effort..Petrie can not make moves without the blessing of the owners and the owners consult with Petrie on the moves. While the Maloofs may have ultimately started the push for Artest, it WAS Petrie who ultimately pulled the trigger on the deal...

I'm guessing the Maloof's want a championship just as much as Petrie, if not more. Remember, they are the ones with money invested in the Kings, not Petrie.

Of course the Maloofs want a championship. What responsible owner doesn't? But they have other things weighing on their minds. The biggest one being (in my opinion): how long do they keep the Kings in Arco before they decide to bail?

Actually, right now that's the least of their worries. They've got David Stern working on that particular problem.

That makes me feel a whole lot better. You're kidding me, right? David Stern is not the Kings' white knight. How does he plan to fix "that particular problem?" With a magic wand? A wave of his hand? These are important issues that need to be addressed, and a vague statement from the commissioner's office won't solve them.

Ehhh I see where you're coming from bro but from what I've heard he's trying to get something creative to work. Like he had the idea for that CA arena thing or w/e for every team in CA that needs an arena(from what I understand that's it right?) but I dunno if he would need a guy like Arnold's help. Hell I don't think I even know what I'm talking about

I do not view the arrival of the NBA commissioner into Sacramento to open channels of communication towards a new arena as being a "vague statement from the commissioner's office."

We have a separate forum for discussing the arena prospects so I won't go into a lot of detail here, but I will reiterate that I personally believe the Maloofs have other things occupying their minds right now.

Actually, I am not too down on the Webber trade. I think people remember him as the player he was, and not that he is now, and think we lost out. The results, before and after his departure tend to reinforce that view. However, consider the following
  • Webber shall be making 22M next year. KT, the only player we shall have on our roster next year from the deal shall be making 7.3M (I know his contract runs for two more years after that).
  • He is currently leading the Sixers to a 5-16 record in the East, (they were losing even with AI), and are in the last place in the Atlantic, losing minutes to Shavlik Randolph in the process.
  • If people are concerned about Artest taking shots away from Martin, think how they would have reacted if Webber had been shooting jumpers from the top of the key.
  • He had missed a huge chunk of 03-04 season after his surgery, and carried a significant risk of missing huge chunks in future seasons too. Having him was like having a risky stock, in which you invest your entire 401K (like Enron). If it goes up, you feel great, but you always dread when it shall tank and wipe out your retirement savings.
It is a proven NBA practice to build around a star or two. When Webber was traded however, he was well past that stage (even though he was playing well at that time). Assuming that his performance and legs shall hold up not only for that season, but for the remaining ones of his contract years was a huge risk, that I think Petrie was wise in avoiding.

I agree with Brick, but just wanted to toss in a quote from Joe Maloof in about August when he said he wanted Adelman back, but the rest of the family convinced him to go along with them and let Rick go. This was just a small part of an interview about hiring Muss and how the family decides and it has to be unanimous....

....for what it's worth...

There's lots to talk about. People aren't taking this Charles in Charge thread seriously enough. Maybe some of us are too young to remember the show, but the similarities between the Charles in Charge show and the Musselman situation are uncanny. Young unproven boss in charge of unruly disruptive ever-changing cast...think about it. If I had photoshop skills I could make a funny theme pic, but I don't.

Oh brother, comparing Charles in Charge to Kings issues? So who's Artest on the show? The blonde chick who was always getting into trouble?
