Whiteside recalled from Reno

I'd love to see Whiteside put it together. He's got the athletic ability/shot-blocking ability to play next to Cousins and his size would give us a damn fine big rotation of Cousins/JT/Hayes/Whiteside. I see no reason in a developmental year that he shouldn't get around 8-10 consistent minutes a game just to start getting a feel for NBA basketball

There's one big reason why he shouldn't be getting 8-10 minutes a game :

He hasn't proven that he belongs on an NBA court yet.

Unless the Kings are getting blown out, there's no reason why he should be playing in the NBA until he shows ANY inkling that he possesses the ability to play at a professional level.

Having said the obvious, I REALLY hope he will show that he has learned SOMEthing in the 1 1/2 years since he was drafted.
There's a lot of upside to him - but he has to show that he's not a lost cause before he earns playing time in anything but a blowout.

That's true, but, considering that most of our team plays at a level that's an embarrassment to this league, no matter how raw Whiteside may be at this point, he'll likely blend right into the background. Half our team should be playing in the D-League anyway so yeah..

I'm all for letting Whiteside play some good minutes. At least he'll get good experience while we're failing miserably this season anyway

This man speaks my mind.

I'm not advocating giving Whiteside minutes, but do have a question. How can he prove that he has the ability to play in the NBA, if he doesn't get a chance to play? I wouldn't mind seeing him get a few minutes here or there to see if he has progressed at all. I do agree that he will likely get those minutes in a blowout to start.

I'm hoping that Coach Smart works on Whiteside as well. He certainly has a lot of potential. What he has can't be taught.

From the growth ive seen in tyreke ever since smart took over, i would like to see this too.

Biggest difference is there Smart was a PG too, brought up in the same PG system that taught Isiah Thomas, the ORIGINAL Isiah THomas, as in HOF.

With Whiteside...well he may well be able to try to give him the zen the way he did Cousins, but he's not going to have that first hand how to be a shotblocking center experience. Don't think Bobby or English are going to be able to provide it either. :)

I think we called up Whiteside to help guide us in the draft. If it looks like he is going to be a total bust, which is possible and maybe likely, we need to know.

Kinda wondering where this "Whiteside could very well be a total bust" stuff is coming from. Dude showed major progress in his physique, which shows good work ethic. He hasn't had much coaching, he's still very young. Way too early to tell anything, but I've seen more positive signs than negative. At this point I'd put the chances of bust at around 10%.

It's exciting to think about his potential. I think getting him some burn in Reno was good prep. Now that there's a competent head coach running things, I've got a lot more confidence he'll develop. It's still a low pressure situation for him, which is perfect.

Maybe Jim Eyen? :D

Coach Smarts talk with Whiteside when he stepped into the practice facility, "Defense, block shots and NEVER and I mean EVER shoot the ball. Can you handle that? If not I know the Bighorns could use a center so just do as I ask and you'll fit right in." Whiteside walked away thinking, "So he said shoot the everytime and grab my own rebound and somehow get blocked, I'm confused. Reno was nice"

He has a decent 15 foot shot.

If we were a playoff contender then I'd agree. But we're not going to make the playoffs this year and this is the kind of year where you want to expose Honeycutt/Whiteside to some NBA playing experience. Getting 8-10 minutes a game in the grand scheme of things is not going to hurt our team in the long or short run

Point of order -
The Kings won against the Trailblazers because of ONE POSSESSION.

If they'd had one more TO, or gave up one more bucket, the game would have ended in a loss.

It's THAT close.

These Kings are simply not good enough (yet) to squander possessions in close games and expect to win. And yes, every win is critical, even in a non-playoff season, because this team desperately needs to learn how to win especially in close, tough-fought games if they're ever going to make it to the next level of competitiveness.

I really want the Kings to win, so until he proves he has an NBA game, I don't want to see Whiteside on the court in anything but a blowout.

Whiteside's game, in college at least, is what the Kings need on the floor. Cousins is not a shot-blocking threat, and is not going to beat you up on defense. In college, that is what Hassan did. If he could even be average, he would be a good fit.

I agree. Well, it was a 3 point win, so one less 2-pt basket may not have been a big deal. But the thinking is correct.

Smart probably just wants to see what he has to work with in Whiteside. Get him into practice and get him learning his way of ball. Gives him some points of interest to work on if/when he goes back to the D-League

This is kind of what I was trying to say. The Kings simply have to know more about Honeycutt and Whiteside and a lot can be learned in practice even if they don't get much game time. These two guys play our positions of worry.

The conclusion is correct, too:

The Blazers passed up an open layup so they could shoot a 3 ptr to try and tie the game.
If they had one basket difference, it would have been a 1 pt game when they stole the ball and the Kings would have lost when they made the layup.

YES! whiteside is back! he can't be any worse than hickson.
Yes, he can and he is.

Currently.

+1 to all of IfAt1st's posts.

I'm super psyched on Whiteside, dude blocks shots like a demon...But apparently he is still clueless on the court. Hopefully Smart can help him to learn the game. I'd love to see him play, but we have pretty much ZERO margin of error, even against sub .500 teams at home.

Now in blowout LOSSES, that is another story....Why not get some Whiteside, Greene, and Honeycutt in garbage time?

Hayes is playing with one arm. When Hayes was out Outlaw and Greene were pressed into duty at PF. Whiteside provides depth and I think you will see him play on the road during the back to backs along with the rest of the bench.
