Whisenant's Wish List

Bench
Here's Coach Whiz's off-season wish list:

1. "A big, bulky bruiser ... someone with a little more weight and heft who can soften up the opponent." He pointed to Seattle center Kamila Vodichkova as the prototype.

2. "A true backup point guard." That's help for Ticha Penicheiro.

3. "A real '3,' a true small forward who is used to playing that position." The Monarchs have made due with converted post players.

4. "All the shooters I can get. That's no secret. We need offense and players who can give us that."

Nothing too surprising, just thought I'd post this up. The rest of the article is also very interesting, talks about where some players will be playing overseas and the status of some of our veterans. Here's the link:

Maïga's a real 3... she's just offensively challenged, but if we get a SG that can shoot, it won't be as big a loss.

:: hoists Walker for Ferdinand sign ::

I agree with number three. I have been saying that from day 1. But number two is not true. He needs a real starting point guard, one that is not offensively challenged and post a threat i.e. Sue Bird, Nikki Teasley.

Oh I'm sorry, he has one......KARA LAWSON!!!!!

Lawson may not be "offensively challenged," but she's not a playmaker, either. If Coach Whiz feels that he still needs to find a "true" backup PG, then apparently he feels that Lawson would be best served playing a position other than PG... an opinion that I happen to agree with.

1: If only Anderson was inspired enough....or had some PT. Her strengths are on the offensive end, which is one of the reason why I think she didn't get a lot of PT. She has the size, she has the skills (at least from what we saw in college) everything else is a ?.

2: Ditto

3: You know, maybe its just me, but I look at Tangela and I see a SF- she just doesn't have the range or the expanded offensive skills. I like Slim's idea, but I might just hold on to Demaya and trade someone else if I could.

4: Shooters, but I don't think Coach/GM Whis wants to sacrafice too much defense. We need offense, but we don't want to lose much of our defense.

As comfortable as I got with Kara at the PG spot in the final regular season game, I don't think that's where she helps us. I understand that's where she is most comfortable, but she needs to get over it and get a SG mindset.

Maiga's our break glass in case of emergency 3 - especially with the degree to which her offensive production went south in the middle of July - which oddly enough is when she did whip out the occasional 15ft jumper she started to hit. She's got another year or two before I turn the reigns completely over to her, when hopefully by then she's raised her FG% from the floor - has a wider array of shots, and maybe has the beginnings of a perimeter shot. But she definitely has more 2005 minutes in my book.

Maybe when Brunson goes to play in Belgium, somebody can help her find her offensive touch from the floor again, and maybe get her to remember that little square on the backboard is there for a reason. Heck, get her to maybe use the backboard more altogether.

I'm scratching my head on this core designation thing. I may have to go back and look at the CBA again. So tagging Tangela and Ticha with the core status essentially bought him two years of having control over their rights instead of them becoming unrestricted FA's last year?

We need a bruiser who can rebound? She can take the place of Anderson who fits neither criterion. The only person who comes to mind right now is Stacey Stephens who I don't think stuck on a roster any where by the end of this year. Barbara Farris might also be an interesting player if she becomes available in Detroit.

But we need for sure 2 more legitimate scorers brought into this camp, I don't care where or how he gets them, but there better be a couple more people here who can do that.

I really hope Mendiola finaly gets a chance. I really think she is the shooter and scorer that the Monarchs need. We definately could have used her in the playoffs instead of wasting a roster spot on Lady.

Maybe the problem is just me. But I just do not feel comfortable with Ticha as my starting point guard like I used to. To me she fits more with a squad that has offensive weapons around her, where she can create and give the ball up to somebody that will score. But too often she has been begged to be more offensive minded and it is just not her game. And if we are offensively challenged at the "1", the "2", "the "3" and yes even sometimes at the "5", it would make sense to put someone at the point that can pose a threat.

I love Ticha's game, but the Monarchs have been down this road now for 7 years with Ticha. It may be time to move in a different direction. Besides "Yo" she is the most tradable player where you could move her with another player and maybe get value in return.

I don't think its just you...if she wasn't on this team next year I'd be a little nostalgically sad, but not for very long if we got a pg who can playmake, score and play some defense. Look at a list of the starting PGs in the West, we have to have the only one who consciously does not score. Lambert in Houston can score, if Van let her shoot. Darling maybe is iffy. Look at the starting PGs for the 8 teams that made the post season and the two still playing.

How about Walker to NY for Shameka Christon? Don't know what the status of Tari Phillips and Ann Wauters is, but it's pretty bad when Bethany Donaphin is starting for your team. Christon is an athletic 3 who has a nice offensive game even though her numbers weren't great her rookie season. Only saw her play on tv a couple of times, but I think she has great potential.

Tangela is a finesse type player and that is what gives her that " she could be a three look " but she does not have the quickness to keep up with the Sam's, Swoopes & Mabika's of the league. she has the size, but 40 minutes a night for 19 nights a summer is like asking Kara to play the point full time....its just not her strong suit. imho.

Coach T said this year Tangela doesn't want to play the 3, which surprised the heck out of me, because she never really seemed comfortable being a 4 or a 5 over the course of her career either, so I was encouraged that she wanted to play a more physical position.

I'm also going to join the bandwagon, I really really hope that Mendiola's offseason in Greece gives her the court experience she'll need to come into the camp with the skills that coach wants to see from her AND that she gets minutes next year. I will sacrifice some defense for some offense with this team.

Christon? From what I understand, that's who Whiz had at the top of his list in the draft - if she did not BLOW UP in draft camp and wasn't named the SEC player of the year, she might have slid down to the Monarchs draft spot. She did not leave a lasting impression on me in her trip to ARCO this year, but that was also the night that the Monarchs unleashed their most dominant defensive display all season (at least in the first half), holding NY to 13pts. But I did see one of her better games on TV, she's definitely going to be a very good one.

She has the skills, but I don't think NY gives her up. They are aging at the wing. Even if they were to make a play at bringing Meek to NY, they may still need Christon around as insurance behind her.
