When Do We Blow It Up?

——————————

BKN Gets: Kevin Huerter & 2nds from PHX
BKN Gives: Dorian Finney-Smith
Why for BKN? The Nets sell off their 31 year old win now vet for some 2nds and a reclamation project in Huerter

——————————

PHX Gets: De’Aaron Fox & Trey Lyles
PHX Gives: Kevin Durant & 2nds
Why for PHX? The Suns are significantly over the 2nd apron but are only a .500 team. They make this move to push back their timeline and look to build around a core duo of Fox & Booker in the coming years.

——————————

SAC Gets: Kevin Durant & Dorian Finney-Smith
SAC Gives: De’Aaron Fox, Kevin Huerter, & Trey Lyles
Why for SAC? The Kings upgrade their #1 option who is more likely to be a #1 option on a contender. Durant is also an excellent fit at PF next to Sabonis due to his other attributes (size, length, athleticism, defense, rim protection, and shooting). DFS gives them another big 3&D forward off the bench to help improve the defense and add more length around Sabonis.

PG - Monk / Carter / McLaughlin
SG - Ellis / Jones
SF - Murray / DeRozan / McDermott
PF - Durant / DFS / Crowder
C - Sabonis / Len / Jones / Robinson

Im probably in the minority here, but I'd love to see Durant on the Kings. I understand it shortens the window here to crazy small but we never have a real window in Sacramento anyway so it'd be fun to try. Thanks for the fantasy tw, now my coffee tastes extra good this morning

Now that an impediment is removed, it is too soon to blow up the entire process. There exists a buffering time to utilize for re-imagining what is possible. It would give Monte time to negotiate the most favorable moves if some moveable players are able to reformulate their value.

Let January play out, with Carter, to see what the Kings are capable of now. There will still be time in February to make changes but needs could be more clearly defined by then if the team is re-energized. Perhaps Fox may opt to stay, despite naysayers on here, and construct his game to what is closer to what appears to be his full potential. A successful January would certainly turn some heads, especially with the difficulty of several of the upcoming opponents.

It may be an overly optimistic path but one that calms the helter-skelter that is presently the norm.

ah yes, clutch points brett seigel's multiple NBA sources.

I just don't buy it. We can't possibly think that firing Brown and trading Huerter for DFS or something of that ilk is what saves this season.
If the ultimate goal was to fire Brown, roll the dice that we have our own version in Ty Lue with Doug Christie, and dish out all of our assets for high end role players, I’m not excited. If that is the plan, then I will eat my words that this was not all a Vivek driven ordeal. Now, if the amazing happens and we go on a 10 game win streak, I certainly reserve the right to backtrack.

In all reality, I don’t see us trading Fox soon.

We just fired Brown. That sends the message that they think our performance is a coaching problem and that the roster construction & talent is fine (but obviously underperforming).

Also, I think the fact that they chose Christie as the interim head coach over Triano and Loucks is telling. Triano and Loucks are currently in control of the offense and defense. Having one of them take over for Brown would likely just be more of the same and not much of a change. Having Christie take over tells me that they wanted a more significant shakeup from the current coaching philosophy, strategy, etc. (again, likely because they think the underperformance is due to coaching vs. roster construction/talent).

Behind the scenes, I’m assuming Monte is recommitting to Fox and telling him that they are prioritizing coaching & roster improvements around him, that they see him as a super star talent that can lead us to the promise land, etc.

If I had to bet, I’d put my money on Fox being on this team after the trade deadline AND a trade being made to help this team win now.

using draft picks.

Monte going all in on wasting 1st round picks in order to make the play-in, lose our draft pick and still not make the play-offs. Then we shall lose Fox for nothing.

should this all occur Monte will have solidified his spot as the second worst GM behind Vlade.

To me this team has one option: build around and then re-tool if it doesn’t work. There is no way Vivek is going to sign off on a complete rebuild. That would mean being bad this year, super bad next year and the year after that. Then being pretty bad for one more year and then hoping at year 4 that one or more of your draft picks turned into the second coming. We have a ton of talent on the roster and most of it is signed long term. Fix the size, defense and shooting problems with up to 2 first round picks and then take a crack at it. Even if we miss the playoffs this year it won’t be a total loss if we show signs of life. Let’s say we finish 30-21 this year. That gives you momentum for next season. All hope is not lost.

Worst case scenerio is you use some picks and you are still awful. You would then have a high draft pick this year. At that point you could trade Fox, Derozan and one more dude if needed and you could have one reset year since you likely retain your ‘26 pick top ten protected. That’s plenty of assets for a rebuild

Knowing Vivek is not going to signoff on a rebuild, how would you handle the situation if you were the GM?

I agree about Christie getting the nod and like it. Also don’t imagine Fox will be traded anytime soon, but not sure how I feel about that until we see a few games and gauge how he responds to the coaching change.

A significant trade still needs to happen and it will likely involve draft picks. Personally I so want Huerter moved, can’t stand hearing about his 3 point shooting prowess, which seems like a non factor, that and the fact trading for him will likely cost us a first round pick.

But you do admit it’s a lose-lose situation for McNair at this point?
do you want to trade Fox of course not. But it happened because he unbalanced the roster by drafting guard after guard. It’s his own damn fault we are in this spot. Now it’s merely a question of how much damage he does before he gets fired.

You’re still not really answering the question…knowing that Vivek won’t signoff on a rebuild, what would you do as a GM?

If your answer is “send in your resignation,” then you technically are not going to be onboard with any Kings GM because the only GM that Vivek will employ will have the direction to build a winner today.

Have you read something that attributes this to Vivek

If your point is this team is prevented from being anything but a lottery team by the owner then I would agree we are doomed until he actually lets his GM take a step back to move forward.
