What's the hold up with Moreland, Acy and Casspi?

I'm in agreement that we must have a move coming up, but I just don't see how the luxury tax is the issue here in holding up the contracts. We can make enough room by stretching Terry to get safely under the tax line if that's what we need to do, and we can make that move anytime up until the end of August. Furthermore there's little question that we can dump off Outlaw at the trade deadline, pay his salary, and clear another $3M. We've got almost $7M worth of Get-Under-The-Luxury-Tax-Free cards to play, so going over by less than $1M shouldn't scare us. The luxury tax isn't a hard cap, and it doesn't matter if we cross it as long as we get back under by the end of the season.

So why not do it now? Well...if we've got a move lined up that would put us over the *apron* with Casspi/Moreland on the roster, then we couldn't do it. So that's what I'm guessing - that we've got a move that's going to add about $3-4M of salary that we're expecting to execute. We make the move while staying under the apron, then stretch Terry to sign Casspi/Moreland. One may ask why not stretch Terry now? Well, we're probably trying as hard as we can to find an alternative - possibly even including him in the hypothetical deal we're putting together. Maybe if we play our cards right we don't need to stretch him and everything works out. But if not, we've got to stay under the apron to execute the deal, then swallow hard and stretch Terry to fill out the roster.

That's the only way it makes sense to me. Otherwise why wait? We can fix the luxury tax stuff at our leisure.

Rookies who signed contracts and other free agents can't be traded yet.

i watched the Cuz interview from USA practice today. He was impressed with Moreland. And when someone asked him about if he thinks the Kings should get Moreland he said "that's not my decision but i think he would be a great addition to our team"

I watched the video as well... It seemed like Cuz had no idea where Moreland was going....

Cuz is probably the only person from day 1 that understand that he NEEDS a shot blocker/good athlete next him it's a shame 4-5 years later we still have yet to get him one.

We should all know the plan going forward by Friday August 15th.

Acy's deadline will be August 15th and if there is any big deals before training camp in October, it will probably happen soon.

The Kings may be trying to get in on some trades like the Kevin Love, or Eric Bledsoe or Greg Monroe deals to either be a third team and help move some players or take some salary with talented, but overpaid players (i.e. Josh Smith).

I was looking at Houston's roster and Moreland probably would not start. To me it seems like Moreland would have a better chance to beat out the PF's on the kings to get playing time and possibly start.

Woah woah woah. Let's slow down a bit. Moreland needs to worry about making a roster first before thinking about where he'll be a starter.
Pretty sure Moreland is a lock to make the roster, if he signs with us. He dominated summer league with his defense, and I know it was just summer league. But it got the attention of Cousins and probably many others around the league.

I'm as big a Moreland proponent as anyone on this board but the reality is that he's an undrafted rookie with some intriguing tools and a nearly non-existant offensive game.

First step is for the Kings to sign him and for him to hopefully continue to do the things he did in Summer League when training camp opens. Then it's all about him developing and hopefully earning a few minutes here and there.

The hope is that long term he can challenge for a starting spot next to Cousins as the long, athletic defensive anchor/rim protector/weak side shotblocker who would get most of his baskets on drop offs, hustle plays, offensive rebounds and hopefully even a 15-18 ft jumper down the road. That'd make for an ideal front court mate for Boogie.

But that scenario is a long way off, if it happens at all. But I'm certainly rooting for the kid.

As a side note, a player like Moreland does have a lot less appeal for the Rockets. Howard is their shotblocker/defensive anchor and his weakness is offensive versatility. What he needs at PF is more if an offensive compliment and ideally a big that can step out and shoot, creating room for Dwight to operate down low.

Part of why I'm excited by Moreland's potential is that he does represent a possible yin to DMC's yang. But right now he just needs to sign and make the roster.

We need him signed long term to develop this next year, so when Evans and Acy one year contracts are done he can advance up to at least a Backup rotation
Player then maybe in Yr 3 start with Big cuz

He is a long-term project with interesting fit and potential

Pretty certain they're all signing with us. PDA is just trying to unload some salary so he told them to hold on.

Moreland just followed another Kings fan on Twitter. Hes going to be a King, no doubt

Start? Oh boy. We've entered the twilight zone now.

Even if we sign him I'd advocate to send him to reno. This is an undrafted rookie. Not Alonzo mourning. Let's all slow down. Lots and lots of guys have looked good in summer league and never played a pro game. I'm excited about Moreland as well, but as a starter THIS season, no. No no no. Just making the team would be a long shot. I really hope moreland isn't thinking "what team can I go to and start?" after not being drafted. We just dumped the delusional one, we don't need another. Morelands first day in practice may be very very eye opening as to how how far he has to go. But he's got a lot of vets to learn from.

At this early stage I'd be very satisfied if he just gets to practice with the team at pro level.

I know our PFs are a special combination of deep and weak, but they are, alas, actually under contract.

Everyone overreacting to everything here. I love it. :)

Hmm...

Zo: 6' 9.5" ht., 7' 6.5" wgspn
Moreland: 6' 9" ht., 7' 3.5" wgspn

He's almost Zo. Carry on. ;)

(Without shoes, of course.)

It's going to be the Kings. Unless for some reason, Moreland WAY jumped the gun, there's no reason he wouldn't have announced what team he signed for already, 3 days after he said he picked his new NBA home.

Stop it! Aside from one little snide remark I know you couldn't help but adding in :), I agree with everything here. With like 5 people on the roster who can play PF, there's absolutely no reason for Moreland to be on the NBA roster this season. Let him play 30 MPG in Reno and work on his conditioning/strength. Let's take a closer look if his defensive instincts are for real in an organized basketball game and then reevaluate next season. By then, we should hopefully have cleared out most of the rif-raf at the PF slot and if Moreland shows he's ready, should have a ready made spot in the rotation. But now? Let's see if he can handle the next step first.

I am always amused at the extremes on this board. Half of you have Moreland looking for a starting spot and huge rotation position, and half of you have him designated to Reno for the entire year and only get a look his second year IF he shows enough defensive chops. How about he stays and plays if he is ready?

If he isn't ready, what about the far more realistic possibility that he makes the team and spends the first half of the season bouncing between Reno and Sacramento, getting reps in Reno and getting experience in practice with the big club and making the bench for games when they are on longer home stands? Then, in the second half of the season (either when we are out of contention and/or moved some of the excess PFs) he comes to Sac full time and gets rotation minutes.

Haven't we seen both of those situations play out with second round picks? IT was a a "stay and play" kid because he was ready, despite being a basically undrafted rookie. Ray was more of the second approach- won a roster spot, came to Sac when the team was around, played in Reno, and used the Jimmer trade (and ultimately our elimination from the playoffs) to get NBA experience.

I just don't understand why we need to designate Moreland as "starter" or "Reno" right now.

Continue to hear positive things regarding the Kings and Eric Moreland. Impressed many. Seems like a lot up in the air.

If Moreland has selected a team and the Kings FO are still talking about him, I think that means they gave him a promise that he would be signed at the rookie contract once everything settled out with trades and Casspi/Acy.

Otherwise, if Moreland's agent told the FO that he chose another team already, why would they comment on him.

I expect that Moreland's signing to be officially announced around August 15th, once Acy's future is decided.
