We're watching the USA game LIVE - spoilers be damned

First half impressions:

Sure looks like Spain will pull out all the stops to try and get TEAM USA out of its game.

If the pace continues in the second half, I see a Spanish meltdown on the bench. I've heard about how ugly some Euro games can get - if the USA gets back a good double-digit lead I don't think the Spanish team will be able to resist more physicality.

I applaud the selection committee for the balance they've got on this squad. And what can you say about Coach K? He's found a way to bring out the best of each of our players and they've all apparently left their egos back here...

Back to the game (at halftime). USA shooting lights out, but so is Spain. Refs early on called a lot of tic tack fouls but it was on both teams. Both teams complained but USA seems more flustered going into the half only up by 8. Spain can win if they go zone and USA goes cold from the outside. Once again, USA lack of an inside game could result in a silver, not gold metal.

I disagree somewhat, PH. I think the US will come out and regain their composure. Did you see the emotions on the Spanish bench? I think they're the ones in real danger of a meltdown if everything doesn't go their way...

The USA usually ends up pulling away late. Hopefully they decide to attack the zone instead of settle for complacency, but it would be nice to see Redd sooner rather than later to get him in the groove.

Im sorry, its just really hard for me...seriously. How can i possibly be excited about winning when I already know its going to happen. Its like watching the espn news highlights, seeing who wins, then watching the game...its not exciting. It only makes it worth it for me if i root for the underdogs.
Right; it's such a foregone conclusion that it's an eight-point game at the half.

Furthermore, a lot of people can empathize with the situation the United States Men's team is in: ever since 2002, international fans from all over the world, and Europe in particular, have never passed on any opportunity to belittle USAB, and some of it has been fair, but much of it has been cheap shots. The United States has been embarrassed in the last three major international competitions it has competed in, and wasn't even favored in the last one. And now that they are favored to win at the Olympic Games, some people still want to minimalize it...

And let's not pretend that international posters won't show up from out of nowhere to make their thoughts known if the United States loses tonight, some whom have hardly posted since the last time the United States lost an international competition. Many of those same posters, if the United States holds on to win, will just pop in with a dismissive "Oh, they were supposed to win anyway," if they even bother to say anything at all. The United States is damned either way in the eyes of many, and I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm personally tired of it. I guess it really is like Wilt said back in the day: nobody likes Goliath.

Spain's biggest problem is no Calderon and now a banged up Rubio. Fernandez really picked up the slack. They have very good depth, but maybe not enough. Second half about to start - back to the boob tube.

Oh my!!! USA better foul out Fernandez quick or.... else... USA going cold, settling for outside shots. Non existant inside game. Oh my!!!

Now this is basketball, bumps, elbows, etc.

And brace yourselves...

GO KOBE!!!
