Weather in the Philippines

I don't know exactly what to say about Japan. I DO know what to say about central Philippines, the Visayas. Homes 3 blocks away from my in-laws fairly nice home have been carried away by mud slides. My relatives have a free room at a classy hotel but their home may be lost. Fortunately my sister's husband is a policeman and kind of gets his way. The house was just rebuilt very nicely. My wife's sister, one of my favorite people in the world, just had her first baby and is scared to be kicked onto the street but I'll take care of that.

It looks like two more huge cloud formations are heading there just like they do in California. I hope they by pass the Visayas and leave my people alone.

For you familiar with Google Earth, take a peek at Leyte or Cebu, Philippines with the weather feature on.

Difficulties in life are relative with the pun intended.

Thanks kennadog. There are several filipinos on this forum. This is not affecting Manila for once. I hope the weather shifts a few miles and dumps on the other parts of the Philippines. Selfish? You bet! They just rebuilt their home and of course insurance is not a part of the equation. I'll certainly help with whatever money I have left and my wife will do the overtime thing to help them rebuid if it is necessary. Their lives are not in danger.

As the parents are on the same island as Manila because of his job, they don't even use the home (the daughter lives there) so maybe a rebuild would be on a different island. Just thinking too far ahead which is normal for me.

I just noticed I called my wife's sister MY sister. She's cool. Interesting mistake.

Well, she is your sister. You just dispensed with the "in-law." I happen to like my SIL a whole bunch, too and often feel it's silly to not just call her my sister. :)

I always feel terrible about things like natural disasters that happen to people. Or even human caused disasters. It could be any of us in their shoes. Any day I wake up could be the day I'll need the help and support of strangers, because my own family and friends won't be enough or will be in the same sinking ship as me. No one should miss the chance to throw out a lifeline to someone, even if it seems like so little in the face of monumental loss.

The house still stands, my sister-in-law is in a great resort (moderately expensive by American standards and outrageous by filipinio standards) built by Imelda Marcos and it appears the next wave of rain shifted south and is hitting south Philippines. That's good for the people I care about. BTW, their house is backed up on a very tall tree denuded hill so that's the problem. The Philippines has been denuded of trees - well, some of it. Illegally cut, of course.

Here's where she, mom, and baby Harry are. Not bad. http://www.blancsablon.com/Philippi...t-hotel/01-leyte-park-resort-hotel-index.html This is where I stayed when I was wooing my wife. This is where we spent our honeymoon. Food is very good. Service is exceptional. There is good and bad in the Philippines but luckily my family has dug itself out of poverty and actually might be called middle class in a country where there almost isn't a middle class.

My father in law is a hard working man and skilled, my mother-in-law the same. They are very bright. Tatay has a 5th grade educatrion yet is now dragged around the Philippines to manage construction jobs. His daughters are college educated. They aren't rich but have one of the nicest houses in the neighborhood with the infusion of help from me, husband, and the hard work of Tatay who is a general contractor.

Maybe he could build an arena. Hmmm!

Update: the storm took a northward turn and now is on my wife's home again. Crap! The men are staying behind to guard the homes from looters. Her cousin lives across the street so that's where the men are hanging out. Uncle and extended family have a car (rare) so they can run like hell if the mud slides. As I understand it, they will get plenty of warning as it will wipe out another part of the area first. They better stay awake in shifts but I have a feeling they don't need my advice. Sooooooo ........... The two families have tanks of water at their homes as most people are dependent on an awful system of water delivery that I am sure is totally inadequate.

Sis is now staying in a friend's house who is gone on vacation. Couldn't afford the resort. A one month old baby with a mother nervous about her first. Husband (it's complicated as divorce is not allowed) has use of his boss' car. That's cool. Dad is on his way back home to check the stability of the home and just to be there. He's skilled. Labor is cheap and filipinos work hard. He'll probably build a wall around his house and get it done in 12 hours. :) He's an action type of guy. He cooks lechon (pig) and most of the men would chip and build in for a good meal and clean water. :)

I admire them all and got myself into a marvelous family. There's always an answer but if the house goes, yikes! When I first was there it was not so hot. Now it is bigger, better, and totally air conditioned. (I said I wouldn't visit if it wasn't air conditioned and bought one before I first visited - no kidding) Now they have two air conditioners, surround sound, a new computer, and broadband. I'm spoiled.

Wow! There is a huge cloud over the central Philippines today. This is unusual. It is skippig the north and south. El Nino is not a factor that I know of. I have seen pictures of downtown Tacloban, Leyte (where MacArthur landed in WW II) and it is a typical scene of two feet of water with people walking through it. Ever heard of cholera? This is a prime breeding ground. People will die, of course, because the medical care sucks. I saw a picture of parents carrying their dead 10-12 year old and it seems more personal, now. I didn't know him but I will bet money he was one of the kids that lined up to the ice cream vendor when I bought out the whole supply and fed the kids.

BTW, the rainy season is July-Sept. My in-laws are fine with Tatay (dad) coming to the rescue. :) No joke, he is a steadying force except I think Nanay (mom) could beat the crap out of him if it really came down to it. She is a steadying force also. :)

I remember the area a little more clearly. There are a huge number of homes up the hill behind my family's house. I never walked up there because of laziness and a distinct distaste for sweat. Many homes have popped up since I was last there last year. They may block the mud if anything can. Cinder block construction.

Thanks, C.

It's still raining and the weather fronts are lining up without a break. That seems unusual to this California transplant. My wife says that sis may not be able to move back in for a month. I feel bad for her because I have gotten involved with her 1st child fears and given advice. This little sucker is about 6 weeks old. Father cannot be around all the time although is an immense help. She picked a good one. (So did her sister)

The local government is thinking of blowing off the top of the huge hill they are backed against. What????? :) At the best, this neighborhood has intermittent power with water supplied through the area system between 3 and 6 AM and then it is turned off. My in-laws have a tank that holds a week's worth. At the worst, no power, no water, and lots of new, fresh, top soil.

The white blob in the center is where my in-laws are. I swear every time I look at this map, it looks like this but I am sure it is changing as the storm fronts to the left change in size. Out of picture virew on the left is a huge front.

Glenn, Id take a look at the weather and the news here tom. The weather here is kind of hot. heating up and might reach 36 degrees accdg to the weather experts. I'd ask my friends who are in cebu and boracay they might know what the weather is up there... don't worry

The weather is back to normal. This was a month ago. The rains dislodged about 530,000 people which sounds like a lot to me. I guess Samar got it the worst but you can see Samar from Leyte. 21 deaths. No trouble for the family though. The women left but the men stayed behind to prevent looting. Now the only left over problem that directly impacts my family is that the electricity service sucks. It's like that rain cloud just parked over Eastern Visayas and wouldn't move for a month. That's not the way it works in California.

36 degrees? I had to convert that to Fahrenheit to figure out that's about as hot as it gets. Not healthy.

I have a story that maybe you can understand. First time I went to the Philipinnes to stay for an extended period, I bought an air conditioner that my father-in-law installed BEFORE I got there. I'm too much of a ***** to tolerate that weather. :)

the weather is hot right now even with aircon I can feel the heat in my legs... but its good when you play ball, sweat a lot tend to burn more excellent for weight loss.... :D

and a perfect time to sell local ice treats like halo-halo (ice cream with milk and fruit and ice) and a like...

glad your family in here is ok Glenn.

been reading and watching the news so far its ok, though the other day i saw how people got paranoid of a few earth fissure in batangas. local govt. said it was no big deal. I swear every one got quake crazy after the japan incident. Sad how it happened to them... but I have to give props and admire their resiliency.. heard its really cold in sacramento though true?

Has someone told you about my weight problems? :)

Halo-halo is awful unless I simply have eaten bad halo-halo. It's the ice that kills it for me.
