Telfair Fined for Loaded Gun on Plane

Thursday, February 16, 2006; E05

The Trail Blazers fined G Sebastian Telfair yesterday after a loaded gun was found on the team's private jet at Boston's Logan International Airport.

The handgun was found in a pillowcase belonging to Telfair as the team plane was being prepared for a flight from Boston to Toronto, the team said in a statement.

Telfair, 20, told authorities the gun belonged to his girlfriend and that he inadvertently grabbed the wrong bag when leaving for the team's road trip.

"We did sweep the plane and we did find the handgun, and it was a loaded handgun," said Jennifer Peppin , a regional spokeswoman based in Seattle for the Transportation Security Administration. "Once we got that, we turned it over to the state police in Boston."

The gun is registered in Oregon to Samantha Rodriguez , Telfair's girlfriend of five years.

The matter was turned over to the Massachusetts Port Authority, which said no charges would be filed.

The team fined Telfair an undisclosed amount for violating league and team policy.

1) Umm...what the hell does the girlfriend of an NBA player need a loaded gun for?

2) You grabbed the wrong bag? Riiiiight.

Don't fine him for the gun.

Fine him for being an idiot.

Hi, I'm 20, and I'm stupid. I'm a multilillionaire, and yet I feel compelled to carry a gun with me on the plane of an NBA team in case there are any shootouts on this next road trip.

Somebody just slap him.

and yet one more time we are all forced to ask "what the heck is it about Portland that just about every NBA player that lands there becomes BOTH stupid and criminal?"

Why shouldn't she own a gun. Everyone should. Although Telfair shouldn't be bringing it on a place, but everyone should own and know how to use firearms properly. It's your right.

although its your right, it doesn't necessarily mean you should. i've never touched a gun outside of something that shoots bb's or pellets, nor do i want to. the power to take another person's life in an instant is one that i do not wish to posess. the "right to bear arms" is more of a burden, imo, than a right. but its all semantics and interpretation of the constitution.

now, for the matter at hand, telfair is an idiot. proof that he belongs on the blazers...

First of all, it's not a right of everyone to hold a gun (mentally unstable, there is probably some sort of intelligence test that you have to pass etc.). And whether anyone SHOULD have a gun is not up to you.

Sure she could buy a gun, but I asked why she needs a gun. I am fine with her owning a gun. Why its loaded and in a bag, especially a bag that Telfair thought was his, makes me say, "Hmmmmmm...."

Its not about having a gun. Its about being a complete moron and having a loaded gun on a NBA chartered airplane.

Btw, without getting into too much of a political debate, there is a big difference between "Everyone SHOULD own a gun" and "Everyone has a RIGHT to own a gun." Just because it is your right to own a gun, has no bearing on whether a person SHOULD exercise that right.
