[Trade] Warriors have obvious Jonathan Kuminga trade demand after latest Kings reports

Cam Thomas took the qualifying offer. Josh Giddey is getting a four-year contract worth $100 million.

Jonathan Kuminga is still standing at the door, out in the cold.

Two more weeks to make something happen... This seems like the only option left on the table (if it ever truly was on the table) which might rescue this upcoming Kings season from misery. At this point I would give Golden State what they want. They get to declare victory and possibly save face in front of their fans (which I think is all they really care about) and we get one step closer to a reset around a younger core with two-way potential. I really don't think Kuminga is coming to Sacramento as a Free Agent next summer if he has any other options (and he will) so if Scott Perry was ever serious about bringing in Kuminga, now is the time to get it over the finish line.

And if we do manage to pry Kuminga loose from Golden State, we're still going to have a Schröder / LaVine starting back-court this season but the coaching staff should start now developing Nique Clifford as a pick and roll ball handler. If Clifford and Kuminga are good enough as playmakers (or at least as iso shot creators) to compliment Sabonis' playmaking skills, maybe next season we could start Keon Ellis and Nique Clifford together in the backcourt. With Ellis, Clifford, Murray and Kuminga on the floor together I think we could get away with starting a smaller big man without a lot of rim protection talent because the other team is going to be walled off from the paint anyway.

Unclear to me just what the hell it is they want. Seems to be Ellis or Keegan plus draft compensation. F no to that. We've given them offers better than almost anyone gets in these scenarios. I'd say let him ride it out until Golden State's signings go elsewhere then sign the deal and go to the high bidder next year. Probably won't be us but I don't want to give in out of desperation and let GS off the hook for alienating their players and being jerks. Doing nothing but waiting harms their season far more than it does ours. I don't really care if we finish 15th as long as we try hard this year.

I'd say go for it if neither Keegan nor Keon is involved.

I meant agree to keeping less protections on the draft compensation. If they're holding out for Ellis or Murray, then they're delusional and that's obviously a no from me too.

I'd still want top 5 or something but would let go of lottery protection beyond that.

The report I saw is they increased their offer to 3/75. That lines up pretty perfectly with a Demar trade if it's a flat 25.
Last season the Warriors had a ton of issues scoring the ball even when Jimmy/Curry played. Demar would be the perfect bench leader to help increase their offensive output.
Doesn't it make more sense for both teams anyways at this point to just wait until December? Sign the contract, and Dec 15th we do Demar + some sort of picks for Kuminga.

I think because of the Bird rule being involved it will have to wait 4 months not 3 from the signing date. So if he signed today we're looking at Jan 15 before he can be traded. Also because the signings they intend to make after will hard cap them it would need to be an exact match, and I think I read in that article they needed to cap him at 22 and change to stay under that 2nd apron cap to get all the other guys they wanted signed.

I may be off. @Capt. Factorial will be in to correct me.

Nailed it!

We are now four months to the day from Jan. 15th, so if the W's do sign Kuminga to a deal, say, in a week, they won't be able to trade him until Jan. 22. But there would be no salary adjustment for trade purposes.

I haven't looked at the other moves they're trying to do, but if they take themselves over the second apron they'll have to trade for less salary coming back. DDR is at $24.75M, so unless they go up to ~$25M, Monk but not DDR would be on the table.

Trade GS either Monk or Derozan. Otherwise eff them. On a side note, I absolutely would not trade an unprotected first for Kuminga. I don’t think he’s going to play winning basketball…..why do you think GS doesn’t want him.
I’d take the same offer they are showing GS and see what other wing is out there.

Any potential unprotected FRP flew the coop 2 months ago. I was fine with the protected pick a month ago just to get the deal done and Kuminga in the building.

Now, it's clear any potential leverage they had a month and a half ago is just so obviously gone. So, like you said, they get the matching contract of their pick of 2 very good players (better than they should be getting tbh) and that's it. Otherwise, he can go to take the QO and you get nothing.

Which has been obvious for over a year now. And why the GS posturing of "Oh, Kuminga is such a future star, we'd only consider trading him for a massive haul" was always so stupid. Any player the actually would have valued in that way would never get to this point in the off-season without a contract and really no path to one at this point.

You get Monk or DDR and that's it. Or you can let Kuminga take the QO and get nothing. Protected FRP should be gone from Perry's offer

This new 3/75 deal might look nice at first glance, but it’s actually worse than the last one. Same money, just dragged out another year with a coach who doesn’t even want him and a roster that doesn’t fit. The whole standoff has already killed their partnership beyond repair. At this point, whether it’s the QO or an S&T, he’s gone. Kuminga and his camp aren’t gonna flinch, period.

I think the Warriors are kind of playing their hand here, if they are dead set on a team option in the 3rd year that definitely means they are on a two year plan and want cap space for 2027. That might explain their non interest in Monk since it's unlikely at this point he opts out of his final year so that would be 21 million on the books for them. 2027 could be a stacked free agency with plenty of players potentially looking form super teams. The Warriors are probably planning to pair up Jokic and Giannis at that point, lol.

That might be their plan, but it is a silly one. Golden State is not, and has never been a free agency destination, except for the chance to play with Steph. The Warriors are not a glamour franchise. No one is moving to the Bay to start a super team without Steph, when instead they can go to LA, Miami, or New York. The NBA is filled with teams that thought they were glamour franchises, only to learn that no one cared about coming to play with them when their stars were gone, or that they weren't the cool market they thought they were (Chicago, San Antonio, Phoenix, Dallas, Boston, Houston, etc...)

This is good GSW won’t be good again in our lifetime with this type of thinking and lacob proving that he’s a dumbass

Yep. And in 2 years? Who knows if Steph is still going? Age cliff comes for everybody, even the legends

He had that draw when KD inked with them after 2017. And you damn well know agents are looking how they're handling Kuminga right now. Maybe that doesn't matter to the cream of the crop, but for the guys who are players 50 and back in the league? yeah, I would not want to be handled like that at all. Or even how long they're making Horf/Melton and all those guys wait. The first preseason game is in 16 days!!!
