"Winning a championship" and "putting butts in seats" are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they are closely related. Focus on the former and the later will take care of itself. Focus on the later and you risk messing up the former.
If the Kings don't improve, there aren't going to be many butts in the seats even if Rubio is a King. A young player can excite the fan base but it is always achived in conjunction with the team competing. JWill excited Sacramento not just because of his skill but because the team was competitive for the first time in a long time. Not coincidentally, the team achived the height of its fan excitment not with JWill, but with the much less flashy Bibby. Why? Because the team was damn good that's why. On the other hand, Memphis traded for JWill hoping he could excite a new nba city the same way he excited Sacto. It was a big flop. Fans didn't want to see a bad team no matter how flashy and popular is the PG.
The lesson here is, if the Kings don't improve, Rubio is not going to save the attendance. There will be an initial uptick for sure, but it won't sustain. The only way to put butts in the seats is to win. That's it.
And I happen to think there are guys at the #4 who can make the Kings competitive. Maybe not playoff bound but definitely not bottom feeder either. Rubio is one of those players who can make the Kings better. But the question isn't whether he can make the Kings better but whether he is the best pick. He may very well be, but at this point, I don't know. And if ESPN is to be believed, the Kings don't know either. There are just too many unknowns at this point, and to appoint Rubio our pick without addressing all the potential issues, is at the very least, unwise.
But I expect nothing more from Ailene Voisin. However, I expected more from Kings fans.
