Vivek was told to get rid of DMC

I don't know what he gains by saying this, though. If I'm DeMarcus, I don't love reading that my owner was told by 'everybody' to get rid of him. That guy must feel like everyone on the planet hates him reading that garbage over and over again.

It's not a big deal, but eh. I kind wish Vivek would stop talking about how bad Cousins reputation was .. just keeps the narrative going.

I think Vivek's statement are actually meant to shoot down the notion that DMC was a bad apple. He makes it very clear that all it wook was an objective look at the situation and a little effort in getting to know DMC to realize that all of the bad rep was uncalled for and that DMC was legit. One more voice saying DMC is alright and all the negative comments and bad press are not a true reflection of DMC.

On the other hand if you are Vivek, this solidifies your relationship with Cuz (everybody else, including apparently Petrie?) hates you, but we believed in you.

Beside which it was all said in a "and they were wrong" fashion.

I think the important point is later in the article when Vivek references Cousins one more time.

Here it is:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any clash of egos among your very large ownership group?

No, no. We speak with one voice. We want to be like the Spurs, but exciting. It is entertainment. I want the greatest show on earth.

Well, no team with DeMarcus Cousins will ever be boring.

Fans, they love a bad ass! (laugh).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't think Cousins will have any problems with Vivek thinking that he's a bad ass.

We all know Cousins wants to be the biggest, meanest, most imposing force on the court and to have Vivek fully buy into that notion is a good thing.

Not that previous managements eye for talent could be fully trusted by the time they left but DeMarcus has made a great leap from last year to this year and that extension could have went in one of two directions. Thankfully his trade value wasn't commensurate with his talent last year or I shudder to think where this franchise would be without Cuz now

It's not like everybody didn't know it. Virtually all of the people who were part of the old regime are gone, so I'm pretty sure DMC isn't losing any sleep over what Vivek has said. Plus, Vivek's actions speak the loudest. He immediately reached out to Demarcus, and he gave him the contract extension that shows how much faith he has in our young center.

The best way to put something to rest once and for all is to bring it completely out into the open.

Or another way of putting it. As Vivek says so often, he likes to hire people smarter than him. Obviously, he would never hire "previous management."

Well Maloofs could not afford the max contract anyway. The last thing the old management would want to see walking out of the door is for the new group to get the best out of DeMarcus. It would make them look very incompetent and they needed to uphold their reputation to some degree.

It would have been the dumbest possible thing to trade DeMarcus or let him become a RFA and this is not in hindsight. A number of us held that view from the very start. Luckily for us, Vivek is a smart man.

I love DeMarcus. I think he's going to be a future HOF-er. That said, until this team starts being competitive it's impossible to say that he does or does not share the blame for this team being such a bad one. It's still somewhat possible to have a future HOF-er on the team and barely miss the playoffs. Not so feasible to have one and be the worst team in your conference. So ... I reserve my judgment, but personally I doubt he's the issue.

Well, considering how mad many of us were with the way the Maloofs handled Evans, Sacramento would have gone nuclear if they had their opportunity to screw up Cousins in the same way, contractually, let alone athletically. (That the other regime could have had Evans for cheaper is a discussion for another time.)

Of course, none of this is surprising to those who saw all of the Maloofs' moves as Phelps-ian. It just confirms that they were running a scorched earth policy. Such a shame that they weren't able to get that last blow in before leaving town. ;)

Thankfully Vivek didn't listen to an ownership group who just finished blowing away their money and who looked to screw over Sacramento. He likely thought, "I'll just do the opposite of what they say."

If anything, it should show the confidence the new regime has in him. Contract included.

Those other guys are gone now

All of the negatives about Demarcus are and have been blown WAYYYY out of proportion. Every time someone has a complaint about him I feel like I'm reading a tabloid news about Dennis Rodman. He's not a gentleman. Get over it. He's the most dominant player at his position and for the entire year his composure has been great with the exception of a handful of games.

We should have kept GP and the Magoof Bro's on as consultants. Give Vivek 3 seasons of doing the opposite of everything they say and we'd have a contender.
