Sorry, had to take the call there -- there's a BIG trade brewing --

Nets and Magic are apparently working on a Vince Carter trade, according to our Chad Ford. Rafer Alston, Courtney Lee and Tony Battie would go to New Jersey.

Battie and Alston give Nets more than $11 million in expirings, plus they get a good young player in Lee, and Battie and Alston aren't total dead weight for '09-10. I'm guessing this means Turkoglu won't be back in Orlando.

I just don't get why the Cavs and Magic are making moves to bring in these retreads who will likely disrupt the team.

Solid move for both teams. Does this make Hedo less of a priority?

It would seem that it would. However, I just don't see how an offense with both Carter and Lewis would remain fluid. I think the Magic are making this deal solely on name-value alone.

so who plays sf? if vince is their sg since they would trade lee, who plays sf? lewis? in that case who plays pf? gortat.... they shouldtry to make a play for yi or some sort of bigman.

I actually like this move a lot, I think they really showed a major weakness by having Lewis at the 4.

PG ) Nelson
SG) Vince
SF) Lewis
PF) Howard
C) Gortat

this creates a team that can still run but plays MUCH better D. Of course if they want to play there old style they can swap Carter and Pietrus at the 2/3 depending on defensive matchups

Probably Carter or Pietrus...

wow i forgot about air france, that would be funny though. former air canada and air france on the same team.

nelson
pietrus
carter
lewis
howard

it could work but i doubt that it will. go cavs.....

That's a nifty move for Orlando and plugs the one hole in their lineup (well other than lack of a true PF). One thing they lacked throughout the playoffs was a guy who could truly consistently create for himself. They had Hedo, but really he is more versatile fill in the gaps guy than goto guy. And they had a rotating cast of thousands at shooting guard. If they can bring back Hedo, get back Jameer, they are going to be major threats again.

If they bring back Hedo, and I think they have to try after these playoffs:

C- Howard
PF- Lewis
SF- Hedo
SG- Carter
PG- Nelson

6th- Pietrus

could be good for orlando, but i really like courtney lee. he's a baller. good potential in him. strong defender, quick on the offensive end.

i dont care for the trade but on a positive note, i will love playing as the magic and cavs in nba 2k10... i will destroy my roommate, hes a laker fan. i will crush him with the magic, especially if they keep hedo.

Well, I like it for New Jersey. Carter gets in the way of their Lebron plans in 2010. Now they have a great young SG (he was impressive in the playoffs this year) to play along with Devin Harris and a ton of money coming off the cap in 2010. Great re-build. Harris, Lee, and Lopez is a pretty good young team already and they have a lotto pick this year to add to that. Now if they can get that Brooklyn arena done, the nest will be all set for Lebron to move in.

I don't like it as much for Orlando. I suppose with Lewis and Hedo as primary pieces their window is limited and going all the way to the Finals this year makes it tough to slow things down. Alston and Battie were expendable. I liked Lee a lot though. Carter is an upgrade in the short-term, but it could come back to bite them in a few years when Carter is gone and New Jersey is beating them in the playoffs.

This move really makes next season critical for Orlando as Carter is passing his prime... Orlando must win now!

I love this power struggle going on in both conferences. San Antonio trying to keep up with LA, Cleveland trying to keep up with Orlando, then Orlando trying to keep up with Cleveland. I was thinking that teams would be making only money moves this summer, but there are legitimate contenders making big splashes to get better immediately. Money might be a consideration in these deals, but all of these trades make the team better right now also. It's not like Denver dumping Marcus Camby for a stack of Post Its and a warm Dr. Pepper. These are legitimate moves. I like it.

Orlando is in win-now mode. They are looking at things short-term right now. Vince Carter is a solid upgrade.

Give it a year or two, if they still can't do it, then maybe you look into trading Lewis/Hedo/Vince for young pieces to go with Howard.

The only young player they gave up is Courtney Lee, who is really a backup. I mean, the guy shows promise and might wind up being a nice player, but he's not someone who's going to make the difference between winning and losing for you. They just lost the Finals with Lee.

Yeah but with the money those guys are making in three years -- Lewis 22mil, Carter 18 mil (team option) and whatever they re-sign Hedo for -- it's going to be very hard to trade any of them. I doubt they can even afford Carter's option anyway. They have two years now to win it all before Carter is gone.

Carter won't be getting that much in a couple of years imo.

Nelson is signed long term at a very good rate, Pietrus as well. Lewis and D12 are also signed long term but at a high rate.

The Magic are already in win-now mode. They invested a lot of $$ in Lews, and, let's not forget, were in the Finals this year. In the Finals, it was clear that they had trouble matching up with the Lakers in the backcourt. Lee is a nice young player (and I like the future duo of Harris/Lee in NJ) but the Magic need more now. They stil have Pietrus and Reddick off the bench on the wing, and if they bring back Hedo, they'll be in good shape.

That's more like it...no way they should let Hedo go..that's their bread and butter play with Hedo with the ball on top and pick-n-roll. Carter is a huge upgrade at SG. Just can't wait for some Carter and D12 highlight dunks!!
