Van Gundy fined $100,000 for comments

Jees, I always thought the conspiracy theorists were nuts... This is going to seriously make me re-think my desire to follow the NBA, depending on how things play out. I think Van Gundy is a man of integrity, and if he says those things then it's not just a coach being angry. Those are serious allegations. Stern can really **** this situation up. The right thing to do is to look into officiating. The dumbass thing to do is to ban Gundy. He does that, and it pretty much sends a signal that this kind of **** is accepted in the league. Does he really think Van Gundy is some sort of malicious liar that stands by his lies? Or that people will think Van Gundy is some kind of pathological liar that is willing to risk his career for one?

I now understand what Yao is really dealing with. I'm rethinking my criticisms of him. He's really been dealing with a lot of **** on top of his obligations with China. The man deserves better.

Mark Cuban has been a total and complete jerk at virtually every Mavs game in Arco. He has been boorish, he has encouraged his team to celebrate on OUR floor after a victory in a regular season game - acting as though it was the WCF or something.

Mark Cuban is ALWAYS in the face of the officials and he is duplicitous in his concerns about fair officiating.

It's bad enough if someone is a poor loser. Mark Cuban is the ultimate poor winner...and I hope he goes down in flames once again this year.

GO ROCKETS!!!!!

(No offense, mavsman - Your owner just makes it very hard to like anything about your team.)

Coulodn't have said it better.

What amazes me (well not really knowing it's Cuban) is that Cuban rails about the moving screen the cornerstone of the Mavs offense. If Dirk isn't flopping he's moving on a screen.

There are two reasons I absolutely hate the Mavs, Mark Cuban and Shawn Bradley. I remmember that Sac - Dallas game where Dallas goalteneded the last shot for a win. The camera immediately cut to Cuban who had a big crap eating grin on his face. Then after the game you could see him consoling the distraught Maloofs. I'm sure Marky will be writing to the league complaining about the out of bounds strip Finley made yesterday.

No owner publically tries to influence the game through public statements about the refs incompetence like Cuban, and always to his team's advantage in the guise of what's good for the game. What a fricking two faced hypocrit.

GO VAN GUNDY. Tear Cuban a new one.

Cuban, who has been fined more than $1 million since buying the team five years ago, said in an e-mail that the accusations were ``crazy'' and ``an insult to officials.'' He also noted that Dallas center Erick Dampier has picked up quick fouls in every game in this series.

``They don't officiate individual players differently,'' Cuban wrote.

Ok did some aliens kidnap Cuban or was he always an alien but now hes been retrained?!

Next hes going to say that the Jordan and Shaq rules never existed!

Wait... I got it. Sam Cassel and Finley are behind the whole thing! :p

Yao makes me nervous when I watch him set moving-screens night, after night, after night. He is as bad as anyone in the League about that. I think he just doesn't know how to set a legal screen.

That said, I think Stern runs NBA officiating like a security organization of a totalitarian police-state. He must be a student of 20th Century European hsitory.

Van Gundy got hosed.

Napoleon Stern has finally lost it. It never ceases to amaze the battles that he chooses. Phil Jackson popped off for more than a decade, and got wrist slaps at worst. Van Gundy makes a statement, and gets nailed with $100,000 fine, plus a CIA investigation, or whatever the heck Stern is talking about it. Get Stern out of there. The guy is ruining the league. He lets Shinn move to New Orleans, rather than make the cheap punk sell the team, and now he has two marginal NBA franchises in Charlotte and New Orleans instead of just one. And this is the same hatchet man who banned Connie Hawkins from the league during the prime of his life for something that was never proven. Of course, clearly his style should be emulated, look at how successful Gary Bettman has been after learning under Stern. . .oh wait, the NHL doesn't exist anymore.

Van Gundy said an official called him and told him that theres a conspiracy in the NBA......... This is getting real serious! Van Gundy is a great coach and i dont want him to be banned from the NBA..... I hope he keeps his mouth shut! Van Gundy stay out of this one its not Larry Johnson vs Alonzo Mourning its much bigger dont get in the middle!

Great point. If I weren't a Mavs fan I would totally agree w/ you. Makes for great TV!

Well, JVG certainly isn't any more satisfied after last night's game! Jeez...

A bit off-topic but not worthy of a new thread- I have noticed ridiculous amounts of free throws in a ton of games this playoffs. It makes the games last way too long and have absolutely no rhythm to them. Not a fan of this.

Stern = Jerk

LMAO

Funny...quite frankly I don't find anything wrong with what Jeff did...he KNEW that when he said those comments he was gonna be fined so if he doesn't mind why should we...Yao IMO is probably the ONE guy in all the NBA that doesn't get a fair shake on anything...he gets taken advantage of on a nightly basis...its sick and shameful...

Mark Cuban is sucha an idiot...thats all I can say...he probably has his own video library in the league office...heh and just to think people actually didn't like how RA sent a tape to the league...look at this guy and he's not even the coach but the OWNER...whatever

I hope somebody finds something that the Mavs constantly do wrong I don't care what it is on the court off the court and constantly gives the league a hard time about it...a lot of people hate Mark Cuban cuz of his smug arrogance his blantant disrespect for the opposing team..and although I don't like those aspects of his personality they aren't what bugs me most...what bugs me most is THIS...his CONSTANT need to tell people how to do their jobs...not just once or twice but constant....Hey Mark you don't own the NBA you don't own the world get over yourself...I wish I could say that to his face...and whats even worse than all that is to hear Mavs fans stick up for that idiot...sure he's the owner of your favorite team so what...you can't convince me that if Mark Cuban owned some other team and acted the same way that you'd say "oh he's done a lot for the team blah blah blah" whatever...every owner does a lot for the team its there team but no owner (in the NBA anyway--well lets see how Dan Gilbert pans out) goes to the extremes as Mark does...I'm a Yankees fan but trust me I do NOT always agree with everything that Steinbrenner says or does...half the time he pisses me off...and he has done a lot for the Yankees....so now what? *phew* that was a bit of a tangent but I'm sorry I had to get it out

GO JVG-GO ROCKETS!!!!!!

Yao IMO is probably the ONE guy in all the NBA that doesn't get a fair shake on anything...he gets taken advantage of on a nightly basis...its sick and shameful...

Yao has been treated unfairly but let's be fair here, and I know you hate the Mavs so you won't agree with me, but there have been a LOAD of blatant moving picks set by Yao that weren't called. (See game 2 winner when TMac scored off a moving Yao pick and roll) When Cubes bitched to the league, what did they say? They actually said, "Cuban you were right on 9 of the 28 infringements you spoke of" THAT'S A LOT OF MISSED CALLS!

And the Mavs got a lot of calls too towards the end of game 5 --- my point? it all evens out. I noticed in your other thread you said the officials disgust you - well they disgust me too. Is it too much to ask the refs to do their job which they are being paid to do?

look at this guy and he's not even the coach but the OWNER...whatever

Well, as the owner of the team he certainly has the right to do what he wishes. If that's something he wants to do - then by all means he can.

what bugs me most is THIS...his CONSTANT need to tell people how to do their jobs...not just once or twice but constant....

He's only asking what us fans are asking, and by us fans I mean Kings fans, Mavs fans, ANY TEAM'S FANS. He's only asking for the refs to DO THEIR JOB. They are supposedly professionals - they should start performing like pro refs.

The 2 most secure jobs in America are meteorologists and NBA refs, IMO.

Hey Mark you don't own the NBA you don't own the world get over yourself...I wish I could say that to his face...

Email him and tell him. He'll respond he always responds to people that email him. (Not sure what kind of response you would get but if you get one, please post it I'm curious!)

and whats even worse than all that is to hear Mavs fans stick up for that idiot...sure he's the owner of your favorite team so what...you can't convince me that if Mark Cuban owned some other team and acted the same way that you'd say "oh he's done a lot for the team blah blah blah" whatever...every owner does a lot for the team its there team but no owner (in the NBA anyway--well lets see how Dan Gilbert pans out) goes to the extremes as Mark does...

Hey I've been a Mavs fan when 20 win seasons were good seasons. I've been a Mavs fan when we went through horrible coaches. Want to know how big of a fan I am? I once bought a Cherokee Parks jersey when the Mavs drafted him.

I like Cuban but don't always agree with him. I'm tired of the picking up 7 players an offseason, usually 2-3 new starters. It's the reason why we haven't won a championship there's been no consistency, no team chemistry. Even now with their success in the postseason this year - this team still hasn't "gelled".

So not ALL Mavs fans stick up for the "idiot". But I will say this: that "idiot" you speak of has done so much for the franchise just like the Maloofs have done for the Kings. So you have to appreciate what he's done if you're a Mavs fan. Hey - atleast he's not the Clippers owner Sterling.

Well, as the owner of the team he certainly has the right to do what he wishes. If that's something he wants to do - then by all means he can.

The problem with Cuban is that, while he professes to be only interested in the improvement of the game by criticizing the refereeing, his public outbursts are always related to "perceived" injustices against the Mavs. And then, just as he's willing to use his money in an attmept to "buy" a winner at the expense of the financial stability and/or competitveness of the league at large (btw Marky how is that beneficial to the league you profess to be so concerned about) he's willing to use his money, in fact threatening to use his money, to endure more fines to publically lambast referrees to the advantage of the Mavericks. You don't think these threats put pressure on Stern and the refs. That to avoid public criticism he's not in essence blackmailing them, througfh his wealth and willingness to use it for his PERSONAL ambitions, to pay attention to what he says and wants or he'll cause a lot of undesireable publicity for Stern and the league. He'll send a tape and if they don't call it the way he thinks is right for the Mavs he'll create a public stink. The ref's told Van Gundy that Cuban had succeded. That they were told to give spceial attention to Yao. Van Gundy pulled back the curtain. Cuban is a @#%$*).

Nope! This is the same Stern most of you all called Napolean just days ago. Napolean doesn't take crap from anybody, does he? No, he doesn't.

The ref's told Van Gundy that Cuban had succeded. That they were told to give spceial attention to Yao. Van Gundy pulled back the curtain. Cuban is a @#%$*).

A few things:

1). LET'S JUST SAY HYPOTHETICALLY THIS REF DID TELL VAN GUNDY THEY WERE FOCUSING ON YAO: Think that Cuban made the league do that? He just simply brought attention to what the Mavs think are bad non-calls. He didn't force Stern or whoever's in charge to "pay special attention to Yao". That is NBA policy now mandated by someone high above - not Mark Cuban.

And what else does it show if this story is indeed true? It shows that MARK CUBAN WAS (dare I say) RIGHT about the officiating. Or else the league wouldn't have agreed with him. So you're going to get mad at Cubes for being correct? Or for speaking up against what he feels is bad officiating?

2). I don't even buy the story in the first place. Here's why:

- Stern doesn't tell officials to target certain players and HE'S CERTAINLY not going to do it after Cuban suggests he should. He doesn't like Cuban - everyone in the NBA knows this. They've butted heads so many times you would think Stern wouldn't give Mark Cuban that kind of satisfaction, that kind of ackowledgement that "gee, you know, Mark Cuban was right." David Stern doesn't do that for Cuban now and he will never do that for Cuban.

- It makes absolutely no sense to lose a television audience of 1 billion+ if Yao leaves the playoffs. And David Stern is all about the globalization of the game. IF INDEED HE / STU JACKSON TARGETED YAO MING IT WOULD BE THE DUMBEST BUSINESS DECISION HE COULD MAKE. No one THAT consumed with globalizing the NBA as much as David Stern is, would jeapordize losing that many viewers. More viewers = more $$

I don't know I don't buy the story period. I think it's a bit of Van Gundy trying to rally his troops and it didn't work in game 5. The series isn't over though so we'll see how effective his strategy was.
