The National Basketball Referees Association, which represents NBA officials, however, disagrees the matter is resolved and wants Van Gundy fired according to a statement reported by USA Today.

"Van Gundy flat out lied to the public," the statement said. "And in the process he called into question the reputations of all NBA game officials and the integrity of the game itself. ... The matter will truly be closed only when Van Gundy is fired."

Translation: Van Gundy will be tossed a minimum of 5 times next season, and the Rockets can forget about getting any favorable calls in any close games.

..well..considering the Rockets get about as many favourable calls as the Kings..especially Yao...won't make much difference..

The referees might want to be careful what they wish for. The Owners Association might retaliate by saying such as such official has done such a poor job that he/she is destroying the integrity of the game and should be removed.

If Stern is consistent he's going to have to fine the NBRA for making a personal accusation against Van Gundy...

This could get pretty amusing by the time it's over. Glad we're not in the middle of it.

Something to think about: Righteous indignation only works if you're right.

I was watching Mike 'n Mike this morning and they kept talking about the officials accusing Van Gundy of egregious lies regarding his backing down and saying he meant front office officials and not referees in his original complaint. They played the original comments over and over to show that he had to have originally been talking about game officials not front office officials. They were, in effect, agreeing with the complaint against JVG by the refs.

Has it occured to anyone that Stern may have coached JVG into changing his original stance? Coached under threat, I assume. If he changes his stance, the league comes out smelling like a rose, and JVG looks like an idiot and a liar. Stern wins, saying it is over, knowing full well what the refs position will be. I believe everything Stern does is for a reason.....and it is usually to make he and his office look wonderful at everyone else's expense. Yes, this is really how little I think of Stern.

What integrity?

I'm curious why everyone automatically assumes that Van Gundy was totally wrong. The league over-reacted by so much and this is making such a big mess that you've got to think he was on to something. The league has always tried to favor owners or teams, and Mark Cuban would do something like this in a heartbeat. Maybe the league should've at least looked into whether this was true instead of slapping JVG with $100K fine the moment they heard what he said. I have yet to hear a single argument why Van Gundy's accusations aren't true.

I absolutely think that this is what happened. This has Stern's fingerprints all over it. And VF21 is dead right. The refs better shut up or a fair amount of them are going to lose their jobs, starting with Violet Palmer.

Yeah, the refs singling out and targeting a specific coach threatens integrity more than whatever Van Gundy did. Aren't refs supposed to be impartial? Or did they finally stop kidding themselves?
