All-Star
As many of you know, this draft isn’t loaded with top-end talent, but it does have many serviceable players deep in the draft. Personally, I’m not really sure who we should take at 7. I think I would go with Adams, but if Burke falls, I think you have to go BPA and take him. Anyways, why don’t we trade back and shed salary?
Trade #1
7[SUP]th[/SUP] pick
Hayes
For
17[SUP]th[/SUP] pick
Atlanta does this considering they are on the verge of a rebuild, and in a rebuild, you need early picks. Instead of them trading both the 17[SUP]th[/SUP] and 18[SUP]th[/SUP] pick to get an early pick they only give up one of their picks and take on Chuck’s contract. Keep in mind that they only have 18 mil on the books, so they have more than enough to absorb his contract as well as make a run at have only 18 mil on the books and a rebuild on the horizon. With an earlier pick, they are able to take a player with much more potential while only taking on Chuck’s contract. This still gives them 34 mil of cap space to go after Howard and/or Paul.
Sacramento does this to shed Hayes’ contract while still putting themselves in a position to take a useful player. Dieng is the player I would target with this pick.
Trade #2
Thomas
For
19[SUP]th[/SUP] pick
Cleveland does this to get a very good backup PG behind Irving. Thomas would be a nice change of pace guard who can provide scoring off the bench. He’s young and has proven he can contribute in this league. His dirt cheap contract is another bonus for Cleveland. Bottom line, they get a cheaper player who has proven his production in this league (rather than taking a flyer on a more expensive player at 19).
Sacramento does this to help ease their log jam at the guard positions while picking up another pick where they can take a player that could be of use to them. I would target Snell with this pick.
Trade #3
Fredette
Outlaw
36[SUP]th[/SUP] pick
For
35[SUP]th[/SUP] pick
Philadelphia does this to acquire Fredette who could find a very nice role behind Holiday, and with Turner on the team, it takes pressure off of Fredette to be the ballhandler. He’ll be able to do what he’s best at – spot up shoot on the perimeter. They get Fredette by taking on Outlaw’s contract and only moving back one spot in the draft.
Sacramento does this to, again, free up the log jam they have at guard while moving Outlaw’s contract. I would target Goodwin with this pick.
If we pull these draft-day trades off, draft the players I suggested, resign Douglas, and resign Evans, our roster will look like this going into free agency:
PG – Douglas/Goodwin
SG – Evans/Thornton
SF – Salmons/Snell
PF – Thompson/Patterson
C – Cousins/Dieng
If we amnesty Salmons, sign Evans to a Curry like deal, sign Douglas for 2.5 mil a year, sign all 3 of our draft picks, we will be sitting at just under 38 mil. This gives us the cap space we need to go after Iguodala. If we sign Iguodala for a 4 year/51 mil deal and sign Dalembert to a 3 year/15 mil deal we will still be 3 mil under the cap and have this roster:
PG – Douglas/Goodwin
SG – Evans/Thornton
SF – Iguodala/Snell
PF – Dalembert/Patterson
C – Cousins/Thompson/Dieng
If we are unsuccessful in our negotiations with Iguodala, we keep Salmons and sign Dalembert. Next year, we don’t pick up Salmons’ team option, let Patterson walk, and look to move Thornton for immediate cap relief (Late 2014 pick?). If we pull that off, we’ll be in position to go after Deng or Granger in free agency.
PG - Douglas/Goodwin
SG - Evans/Snell
SF - Deng/Snell
PF - Dalembert/Thompson
C - Cousins/Dieng
