Tyrese Haliburton named to US Select Team

That's a solid list. Obi topping tho..?

I think this is similar to the Kevin Love selection for the Team USA roster. The list of qualifying big men who aren't on another country's national team roster already is extremely thin right now.

Skimmed over this list earlier so I didn't notice it but what the hell is 30-year-old perpetual G-Leaguer/current Euroleague player John Jenkins doing on this roster?

Good for him but hopefully this doesn't interfere with him getting his body beyond teenage level. He needs to be living in the weight room right now.

I think we both know that Boogie will never play for Team USA, for political reasons. Team USA leadership seems to lean heavily in the direction of "good team guys" or at least players who have that perception attached to them. Also, I don't know what happened with Fox leaving the team in 2019 but his omission from the list of 57 finalists this year was glaring and seems to indicate he may just be out for good at this point.

When Swipa makes the All Star squad it will be hard to keep him off Team USA.

I’m confused. Boogie’s a gold medal winner for Team USA in 2016. It’s less political/bad guy reasons and more “Injuries have made me a shell of my former self” reasons, right?

Ha! I stand corrected. Somehow I missed Boogie's whole Team USA career.

Are we talking Boogie Cousins? Cousins played for Team USA in Rio Olympics. My son played on the Water Polo team and took a picture with him on the basketball teams ship.

btw just made official today my son will be going to Tokyo. Go Team USA.

The General forum is probably right. You should post game threads for your son's games!

yeah okay I will.

For basketball fans watching water polo will give some insight into Jokic’s game. Water Polo is big in Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro . All three teams are medal contenders. Jokic has definitely translated some of the skills and physicality of Water Polo onto the basketball court.

Interesting, I never imagined those countries being good Water Polo countries, granted I have no idea what makes a good Water Polo country since I've never even played it. What makes their teams good? I don't know much about Water Polo.

this may be pure speculation on my part but I think one factor to consider here is that those Baltic countries have close access to the sea and they are constantly swimming in them for long period of times and a lot of them genetically are gifted with height which is ideal in a sport like this

most water polo athletes have similar skills and athletic profiles to basketball players. Length matters, good hands matters, IQ matters a lot as you have to make quick decisions and your time window can be impacted by the water. Shooting matters. The players are typically shooting the ball with accuracy at 50-55 MPH.

Where it differs is Water Polo players typically trade off a little quickness for endurance to be able to get up and down the pool. So a water polo player’s best track event might be the 800 versus the 100 or 50. A player without the endurance can fail to get back to defend the fast break (called a counter in water polo)

Water polo also tends to be more physical as much of the game occurs under water where the refs can’t see. So as an example in a drop step you can’t hook the defender but water polo post players (called sets or centers) hook routinely when turning the defender. Of course, the defender is physically keeping his hips up and being physical to not be turned. If the post defender sinks, pulls back, or holds the offensive player he will be sent off for 20 seceonds.

so take a nation of long good athletes, remove a touch of quickness for endurance and physicality and you have an ideal water polo player. Or you have basketball players like Jokic, Bjelicia, Vucevic, Divac, Nurkic etc. if they are 6’ 10” versus 6’ 6”.

exactly. The have courses set up in harbors on the coast.

If you know basketball you know 2/3rds of water polo. You will see post moves, fast breaks, picks in the water to free players for a shot. Another 1/3 is like hockey with moving the goalie, creating shooting angles and lanes by moving the ball side to side, shooting holes and creating extra man advantages.
