Tyreke ranked #7 among NBA SG's

This was over at yahoo sports by Kelly Dwyer. Tyreke was ranked behind Iguodala, Ginobili, JJ, B Roy, Kobe, and Wade. Not sure if it's a compliment that he's ranked so high and others clearly see his talent, or if it's an insult because here's another journalist who doesn't realize what freaking position Tyreke plays.

Neither. It's just another list.

At least the writer mentions the combo-guard nature of Tyreke's game. Some ignore that entirely.

The author actually qualified the reason for Tyreke here very well. Unless there is a more prototypical shooting guard in the backcourt, the smaller guard will always be slotted as pg because that's who he will guard, and who will usually guard him. It's just how the categories work, and I think were wasting our time huffing and puffing about it.

If Garcia starts alongside Tyreke, Tyreke will be listed as a pg. If Beno starts, Tyreke will be a SG. Any argument otherwise is just a waste of time guys. Look at the top guys; Wade/Kobe/Roy/JJ. All are playing the SG spot, but occupy the ball like a 1. Tyreke is like them more than any other guard in the league. So unless everyone here in KF has a problem w/the aforementioned 4 being listed as SG, crying about Reke as a 2 has no credibility.

That said, I agree with the slotting except for Iggy. JJ/Roy/Manu (when healthy) line up about the same in terms of stats, but all are more versatile right now. RIGHT NOW. I'd take Reke over all of them, but right now, young guys need to be unquestionably better than a vet to get the tiebreaker. Just like the young guy will need to be overtly better to get a nod in the All star game. Just like in life, seniority counts.

I can understand the author's rationalization that Tyreke starts alongside Beno who has always been listed as a PG.

But he also claims that Beno is 5'11". It's a minor discrepancy (we all know Beno is 6'3") but when writers get minor but very obvious points wrong (anyone who watched him knows Beno is a tall PG) it causes the writer to lose credibility in my eyes.

That said, an interesting article. I don't see Wade as better than Kobe. The two of them are in the top tier apart from the rest of the pack but Kobe is better by a wide margin. I also think that Evans (if considered a SG) is clearly better than Iguodala, possibly Ginobili and maybe even Johnson.

I should delete this thread. Have you guys even LOOKED at the rest of the rankings, both for SGs and PGs? They would be too pathetic even for Hoopsworld. Unless you are interested in seeing how Anthony Morrow, James Harden and JJ Reddick are better thna Rip Hamilton and Vince Carter of course.

And claimiing that Beno is 5'11" tall rather than 6'3", in order to support a point about Tyreke even (in other words the height is important, not just a throwaway), is just sort of icing. You should not blog about things you have no clue about. In this case the NBA.

Agreed. And as much as I hate to say it, anyone who ranks Wade above Kobe doesn't know much about basketball.

To me, Wade was actually the best player in the league 2 seasons ago (the year when he came back fresh after sitting out a chunk of the previous season). This past season, LeBron was the best player and Wade was #2.

kobe is really slowing down. He can definitely still put up huge nights from time to time, but the frequency of that is getting less and less. Defenders are having a easier time against him nowadays. And a big part is kobe doesn't play defense anymore. Even though he gets picked for all defensive 1st team, he is mostly guarding the 4th or 5th offensive options on the opposing team.

While kobe draws attention to make it easier for his teammates, it also works the other way around. Having a top 3 big man in the game that is as skilled as Pau makes kobe look a lot better and they put out wins that they shouldn't have won. All this makes kobe look like he hasn't on the decline when he really has.

Well, the rankings are quite terrible, and then there is the anomaly of having OJ mayo and Ty Lawson in every picture? Some kind of strange subliminal messaging?

yeah.. I think these rankings were some kind of joke no?

Beno at 5'11 lol. That reminds me of a quote from the London announcers doing the Bulls game "Larry Bird was what? 5'11?" Lol.
Beno is 6'3 and 200lbs. He's not small by any means.

i'd prefer Dwyer rank Tyreke as the worst PG because he doesn't think Tyreke is a PG than to rank him as a SG because he thinks that's what Tyreke is.

As a PG Tyreke dominates and messes with the rankings. Put him at SG because it's an easier writeup, but Dwyer failed there too by calling Udrih short.

Ty Lawson is in every single photo for the shooting guard rankings as well as the point guard rankings.

It was O.J. Mayo, not Lawson, as the defender in the SG photos. Still, I don't see how that qualifies as "wrong". It's more like "trying to be clever", and in my opinion it worked pretty well.

That was just goofing off. Especially the Mayo on Mayo shot. Nothing wrong with that if it were actually attached to a display of even remote basketball acumen.

As it is this was one of those turning point moments where in one giant blast of ignorance a writer more or less permanently disqualifies himself in my mind from hainvg anything relevant to say about the NBA. If you don't know what you are talking about, don't expose yourself! You won't find me off writing articles about the NHL.

Yes and Magic Johnson was also a SG because he played alongside 6' 3" Byron Scott:) Byron also defended the PG on most nights!

At least for one more season (since we don't have a true point once again) he will be a pg so the list is pretty irrelevant. But even if then you gotta rank him among sgs I would put him among Iguodala any day of a week!

But JJ is indeed better than Carter now.

So, the same dude just did his ranking for power forwards...according to him there are 30 power forwards in the NBA that are better than Jason Thompson...I don't think so. Landry is 15th, by the way.

He also did the first part of his center rankings, and Cousins is 25th. I'd post links, but it's all cluttered about on the Yahoo! Sports main NBA page.
