Trading up...

IMO, this would make the Celtics alot more competitive and still land them a nice young player. Here it is:

Mike Bibby
Brad Miller
10th Pick

For

Theo Ratliff
Wally Szczerbiak
5th Pick

How does this make the Celts competitive? Firstly, it gives a 2nd big weapon beside Pierce. Bibby is clutch, a very good scorer and a good distributor. Pressure is on Ainge now to make the Celts competitive. Bibby would ease the pressure off Pierce as well as being a classy veteran that the kids (West, Telfair-probably gone) can learn from.
Miller is an excellent passing big man with range on his shot. Think of what this would do for Big Al. It would be perfect. Miller drags centers out, if they don't follow him, Miller will make them pay with his soft touch. He is also adept at finding cutting players and tiny gaps for feeding players. This would be the perfect compliment to Al as he could go straight to work without having to worry about a center being there. Miller also spreads the floor for shooters.

The 10th is still a very nice piece and really makes this trade do-able. The Celts could keep all their young players, nab another young piece for the future and be competitive in the East right now!

Not sure how realistic the trade is, but it's certainly not one that you instantly say "No thanks" to if you're Ainge.

Thoughts?

There is no way salaries work for this, even though Celts do this in a heartbeat and I don't know why the Kings do it. Doesn't make us better or younger. ALthough i'd love to see Ratliff....

Realgm says trade works (as long as Bibby doesn't opt out).
Kings do it because Theo is an expiring and they get a chance at a franchise player with the 5th pick. We're not (or shouldn't) be trying to get better, we should be trying to put ourselves in the best position possible for the future which is what this trade does. With Yi or Brandon Wright playing next to KMart we have a very solid future, not to mention future picks and our other youngsters working out. It would also help us get a great pick next year which is loaded with potential star PGs.

The "unless Bibby opts out" is a BIG albatross around the neck right now. If he's traded to a team that expects to be able to work with him and he decides to opt out next year, they're pretty much screwed.

Someone brought up that very point on another board I posted this trade on, and to be fair it's a very valid point. Being the GM of the Kings just ain't too easy :D !

Unless you find a team that might not mind him opting out next year. In that situation you would probably have to trade their pick this year for the Kings next year first that would have minimum protection. Minnesota could fit that bill allowing them to possibly unload one of their misfit point guards in the process if the situation is right. However if they use foyle as the point guard going forward that would rule that out.

Which is exactly why I said "If he's traded to a team that expects to be able to work with him."

Finding a team that doesn't really care if he stays or not is an entirely different subject, since the OP specified a trade scenario involving the Celtics giving up their #5 pick. I don't think they'd do that for a Bibby rental.

Oh I agree, that is why I switched teams. I don't see Boston as a viable option in terms of Bibby. I was just trying to give a scenerio where the ETO wouldn't necessarily be that "big albatross" around the neck.

But if we wanted to get technical, having to give up next years pick because of the ETO does make it a "big albatross" just as you had called it:o.
