Trade breaks up relationships
By Mark Montieth

January 16, 2005
Orlando's surprising trade with Sacramento last week broke up long-running and complex partnerships on each coast. When the ground had settled, only Cuttino Mobley emerged with a smile, but both teams thought they had improved by ending dangerous liaisons.
The Magic sent Mobley and Michael Bradley to the Kings for Doug Christie, a deal that ended the six-year backcourt partnership of Mobley and point guard Steve Francis, and the five-year relationship between Doug and Jackie Christie and the Kings.
Francis was upset to lose his running mate, but their cozy partnership was part of the reason Magic general manager John Weisbrod made the trade. Francis too often looked for Mobley on the perimeter at the expense of other teammates who were in position for better shots.
"We're trying to get Steve into a totally new way of playing basketball, a five-man outlook, and obviously that becomes difficult when you have someone there that you are so accustomed to and familiar with," Weisbrod said. "Sometimes Cuttino and his familiarity could be a crutch for Steve. It's hard to lose that, but I think (Francis) will be better for it."
Weisbrod also was motivated by a desire to improve his team's league-worst defense, the fact Mobley can and probably will opt out of his contract at the end of the season and a desire to get backup Hedo Turkoglu more playing time.
"There were storm clouds on the horizon," Weisbrod said. "Cuttino's minutes were going to go down and not up and I'm not sure he would have been happy with playing 20 to 24 minutes a night."
The move paid immediate dividends for Turkoglu, who scored 26 points in his first start of the season Wednesday at Minnesota. Orlando is 17-8 when he scores in double figures.
The trade went down even harder in Sacramento, where the Christies had been entrenched in the organization and the community -- for better or worse.
His teammates seemed genuinely hurt by the trade. Fans, however, were not. A poll on the Kingstalk.com Web site gave 67.8 percent approval to the deal.
Christie had to cut short a radio interview after 10 minutes when he became too emotional to talk, and his wife took over.
"This is a real trying time," she said. "It hurts our heart, but we understand. Orlando will be our new place, but Sacramento will be our home."
Jackie Christie's role with the team was so intense that some in Sacramento believed she was part of the reason for the trade. She occasionally upbraided team employees for not performing as she wanted and occasionally traveled to road games on the team plane. The joke in Sacramento was that Jackie Christie had been traded to the Magic, and Doug was included in the deal.
Christie was the Kings' best defender, so the trade will hurt them on that half of the court. But they aren't a defensive-oriented team, anyway, and Mobley should allow them to do what they do best -- score -- even better.
"This is a reasonable gamble, if you want to call it a gamble," Kings president Geoff Petrie said after making a rare in-season move. "We give up some size and versatility, but we got a guy who can drive and pass, can break his man down, can finish at the basket. And I think Cuttino can be adequate defensively."
Christie took the maximum allowable time to report to the Magic. He had two points and three assists in 26 minutes in his debut Saturday against the Indiana Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse. His delay prevented Mobley from playing for the Kings until Saturday.
Mobley, however, is happy to have moved to a better team where he'll have more opportunities to flex his shooting elbow.
"I score," he told Sacramento reporters upon his arrival. "I can play a little bit of D."
A little bit is all they'll ask.

His teammates seemed genuinely hurt by the trade. Fans, however, were not. A poll on the Kingstalk.com Web site gave 67.8 percent approval to the deal.

That is the most false statement I've ever read.

I think some emails need to be sent to explain the difference between being hurt by a trade and thinking it was a good one for the team. I don't know about some other website, but judging by this one and the radio callers I'd say most fans had the same reaction as the players - sadness that Christie was leaving but an optimistic outlook on the results of the trade.

What is some guy in Indy writing about this trade for anyway??

Perfect response. I agree wholeheartedly.

I didn't know reporters got their info from this or ANY site! Too bad the writer did not logon here on the first day, I think the pic would have been much different for him...instead, he relys on info given after one game, true homeristic reporting at it's best.

What I see Mr. Monteith saying is that NEITHER team traded away a lackadaisical player, and surely this much is true. What each team traded was team effort as a result of the play of Christie for King's and Mobley for Magic, imo. Both teams are better off with their current roster, to force the rest of the team into playing TEAM basketball. I like the look of our team the past two games without Doug, though his presence will be missed in certain key situations and matchups.

As for Jackie, well... I'm sure she'll be missed in many circles around Sacramento, but I doubt one of them is Arco Arena.

;)

Agreed. Wow, she's just so picky:rolleyes: oh my gosh..and Doug doesn't realize that?! He HAS to do everything she says.. or who knows what she has in store for him. Jason Kidd even had dinner with him one night to tell him he needs to leave her. And get this, a 14 year old girl came up to Doug for and autograph.. poor thing doesn't even get an autograph because Jackie thinks the girl is in love with him and would steal him or something, and she yells at the girl and shooes her away! Now Doug, is that normal?

SerbSweetie16, Jackie contributes to Doug's life somehow. Maybe you've never heard the saying "Behind every successful man is a good woman". :D

Sure, there are those who would not qualify Jackie as "good", but isn't Doug "good"? The rest is just fodder.

Nuff said.

Jackie's a jealous nut. I absolutely refuse to apolgize for judging her since she makes her conduct so abundantly public. And IMHO the single biggest, indeed maybe only, black mark on Doug Christie's character is that he allows that woman to treat people the way she does in his name. Its degrading to every woman not named Jackie who meets him, and its simply wrong. And IMHO, if you have character, you have to stand up and tell her its wrong when she crosses that line. Being devoted to your wife is one thing. Being blind or callous to others out of your devotion is quite another.

All true. And neither do I find Jackie to be a "good" woman. It was for the sake of a possible "Jackie bashing" that I inserted my nuff said statement.

Totally embarrassing to most men is Jackie's behavior, true. But a Jackie-bashing is not only un-cool to Doug's memory, it is now pointless. I give the fans here credit for not unleashing a possible tirade in Jackie's name sooner, and I was feeling a little puney for even commenting on her negatively...

:o

I agree with albeitrue - there's no need to bash Jackie Christie, especially now.

I, too, sent an email to the writer.

Yeah, as I read that, I was like WTF?

Thanks to those who sent e-mails to the writer on behalf of all Kings fans who did not (completely) agree with the article.

Ok..now this is when she may get the kids involved..They have a 14 yr old daughter right..(maybe bring the kids to the game to keep all the minors away, the ones SHE can't really confront without getting in trouble)
I really don't mean to make jokes about this or anything but some of this is really funny, but most is just ridiculous! It really really bothers me considering I'm a 19 year old female fan of his. I love Doug with all my heart, as you all know. I know every NBA fan has a favorite player, Doug Christie just happens to be mine. The thing that sucks for me and all the fellow female Doug fans is that we will probably never ever get the chance to meet him because of our gender and I don't think that's right. I've had a few VERY close encounters with him myself but they never turned out as hoped. Still, I'm not mad at him, it's just really really frustrating. I know Doug is a wonderful person on and off court, it's just like he's being shielded by a 'Jackie wall'. And that's the one thing that upsets me most about Doug, he doesn't stand up to her and say "Well hey, they're my fans too and they deserve some kind of acknowledgment too." All I'd like is a simple hi, a wave, maybe a picture, possibly an autograph, anything would do! If I had ANY kind of acknowledgment from Doug, my life would be complete. Not all females are out looking to try and take Doug away from Jackie. I know he's married and I respect that, I always will. It just sucks for us girls, especially a fan like myself, I think I deserve the least bit of acknowledgement. I support him through thick and thin, I'll always stand up for him and even got into an 'argument' with some man over him (about 2 feet away from him, at a game LOL) I just wish one day he will see that us female fans need some love too, not just the men. But no matter what i'll always be a fan of his, love him and represent him because I'm a fan of his game.

And note to Jackie: I understand the whole stand by your man thing, ok cool..that's what you should do but you don't tell him who he can and who he can't talk to. It's not fair. It's called TRUST! If you don't trust him why'd you marry him?! And just to let you know he is very trustworthy! My personal experience..I called him numerous times when he was no more than 3 feet away, I got NO kind of acknowledgement whatsoever..and this wasn't even during the game..it was shootaround! Doug, I'm not mad at you..Just please, open your eyes and see it from the female fans perspective! We love you too!

ImaDoug,

Please do not take offense at what I'm trying to say, but 19-year-old female fans who confess to "loving an athlete with all my heart" are exactly why some NBA wives are now ex-wives. Granted Jackie may be way over the top, but it's Doug's choice to live the lifestyle he's living. You can respect him and his game and be disappointed that he doesn't interact at any level with other females but don't expect the relationship to change. As unorthodox as some may find it, it's what Doug wants - or he wouldn't be willing to live it.

I understand that completely VF21, I know that it's whatever Doug wants, your exactly right, but I'm just saying I just don't understand it sometimes, it's very frustrating for a fan like myself. And I don't know if Doug sees it from a female fans perspective. It really does sucks for us, and by me saying that I love him with all my heart, I didn't mean for it to sound that way. It's more like a family type love I guess you could say, nothing that personal. I don't expect their relationship to change either, but I'm just saying that it would be nice if a true fan (female) could get some acknowledgment too sometimes.

I understand your admiration for Christie, but goodness, this sounds like a sick love letter. This sounds more like a 13 yr old girl who wrote this rather than a 19 yr old.

D. Christie does not owe you or anyone anything.

And excuse me??? You life would be complete if you got a simple hi, a wave, or picture. C'mon, what kind of statement is this. You have your WHOLE life ahead of you. That's just a ridiculous statement.

D. Christie chose to marry Jackie no matter what some of us seem to think is abnormal in a marriage...but he chose it. So no since pleading to Jackie about the way she is.

Actualy missing out on the publicity of the TV show The Christies will be a big pluss for the team. No team needs that kind of side show, except maybe the Lakers, and I honestly think that a big part of the problem there last season was Kobegate.

Hey we all have our opinions don't we? Yes we do. I said what I had to say and how I felt, and so did you. But don't bash me because of what I had to say. I didn't say anything bad about Doug nor Jackie. I never said Doug owes me or anyone anything but it would be NICE if we could get acknowledged sometimes. Is that so bad to say? And whatever statement I make is my opinon. If I said a simple hi or whatever would make my life complete maybe to me it would. And it was just a statement, so tell me what exactly is the big deal? Obviously your not as big of a fan as some of us on here, and really you don't care, but some of us do, so respect that.
