Time running out for P-O-P-C-O-R-N

I don't have a link but the Ch. 10 news has reported that dialing POPCORN to get the time is going to be discontinued in about three weeks. (Actually, you could dial 767 and any other four numbers and get the friendly voice...) AT&T says the equipment is failing, replacement parts are tough to get, and people have multiple other ways to get the time. And it will free up all the 767 numbers.

I'm surprised its still around, I stopped ever trying to use it back when I lived in Boston and my girlfriend called it only to speak to one very angry Bostonian sick of lazy Californians calling looking for the time. :)

Currently, California and Nevada are the only remaining states using the P-O-P-C-O-R-N service now, but pretty soon --- actually, Sept. 19th --- CA will discontinue it, and that leaves only Nevada.

Recently, the SacBee did a nice article on it. There's also some background on the woman behind the voice.

Here's SacBee's story:

^Good find.

Seems like a waste to have all 767 numbers run the recording for a full year but I know I'd do everything in my power to avoid ever having a number with that prefix no matter where I lived.

Californians don't wear watches? :p

I don't. And virtually everything I own with a clock built in runs on electricity. When the power goes out up here, it's always been nice to be able to dial 767-1111 (I never bothered with the C-O-R-N cause you can't see that in the dark anyway).

Besides, we're Californians. Why would we wear something that can keep track of time when we can get it on our cell phones (which I don't have), my computer (which doesn't work when the power is out), etc.?

Like, Dude? How are we going to know when it's exactly New Year's if we can't clog up the phone lines to hear the nice lady say "At the sound of the tone, Pacific Standard Time will be 12:00 a.m. ... "?

Uhm... buy a damned watch? :D

OMG - That is, like, sooooooooo wrong. We shouldn't have to buy a watch just to find out the time. That's what P-O-P-C-O-R-N is for!!! We buy watches to, like, impress our friends with our style and blind them with the brilliance. Watches are bling - they aren't supposed to be, like, functional or whatever...
