The roller coaster ride of Kings fandom

Things aren't very much fun right now. The team is at loose ends. The fans, sensing the lack of effort or focus from the team, are becoming less and less tolerant of sub-par performances.

Well, here's the bad news: It's not going to get better overnight.

And the good news? It's not going to get better overnight.

A paradox you say? Perhaps, but perhaps we need to look at it this way.

A lot of us have been spoiled the last few years. It's been an E ticket ride being a Kings fan. Things were so much fun we didn't want the ride to end.

But all good things come to an end. Now, the current ride is over.

We have to exit, find our way out and then decide if we want to stand in line for the next available car.

Standing in line isn't fun. In fact, it's pretty boring. There isn't much to cheer about. After all, the old ride is over. There are the fond memories but you can't keep cheering about it forever.

The new ride hasn't begun yet. You know it's going to, but until it does, there's just no real passion to share. So, we have to find things to talk about to pass the time...

We are Kings fans. We've been at the bottom. We took the ride and had the times of our lives. Sure, we didn't grab the brass ring but the ride was still well worth the cost.

Now, we're looking at the line, trying to decide if we have the patience and fortitude to queue up again and wait for however long it takes.

Me? I'm in line. I may gripe about some of the things that happen, but I'm not giving up my spot.

If you really want to appreciate something, you have to wait for it. You can't truly enjoy good unless you've seen bad. Sweet isn't quite as sweet unless you've known sour.

It's frustrating for every single one of us right now. Some of us deal with it a little better than others. Some will decide the wait is too long or the price is too dear and they'll leave. At the end, however, when the car is loading for the first trip up the hill, we'll all wonder how we ever doubted that it would happen again.

I'm sticking around. Are you?

GO KINGS!!!!!

I'm more frustrated with the lack of heart the Kings are showing on the floor if they can atleast play with some determination I'd be happy but theres nothing right now I guess I can only hope things get better.

yeah, but the thing is we have the trade chips to make it get better overnight. Well not overnight, but soon. We can package some of these vets for a young guy with a bright future IE Chris Bosh. If we made the right offer and Bosh continues to hate TO then that'd be a hard offer to turn down if you're toronto. Or we can try to go after KG. Or just get some players who make a better team.

Anyways, don't want to talk about the trades and stuff that much anymore in this post.

So yeah, I'll still be a kings fan as long as they're in Northern California. We're going through a bad time, but it'll eventually end and things'll be good again. Whether it's December 15th, January, February, next season, the season after that, this draft, whatever. It'll happen-eventually.;)

I got in line in 1985 and have never left, never thought of leaving or even considered it and I plan to stay in line and on the ride for as long as I can foresee.

Ya but it'll get better. Things can only go up from here! It might not feel so good being a fan now but things WILL be good again. I guess we are in a waiting period like VF said.

Ditto...I survived the Joe Axelson, Bill Russell, Dick Motta years, I think I can handle THIS!

I don't think that you were intending it be as much, VF21, but your description also sounds just like one is talking about what marriage is like, heh. At least that is what it reminded me of.

So I just can't resist phrasing my answer as such-I made a committment and vow before God to be a Kings fan until death does us part, for better or worse, and I am sticking to that.

Hey, don't give up... I am a long-time Kings fan and I am not concerned about a bad record, coaching changes, trades, or the arena deal... if you cannot sit and enjoy watching the your favorite team play; win, lose, or draw; what's the point in ever being a fan? I don't watch the Kings because they win or because they have flawless offensive execution. Those are just bonuses. I watch the Kings because I am a Kings fan. Have the past two seasons been emotional and surreal at times (I will never forget that first game after the Webber trade when Webber missed the big shot at the end... I swear he missed on purpose)? Absolutely. This is gut-check time for fans plain and simple... time for the bandwagon to unload... time for fair-weather fans to discuss if the Webber trade was worth it and how they can no longer cheer for the Kings as they have no REAL heart or love for the Kings... just a love of winning (Remember, everybody loves a winner). Time for the real fans, the fans who crave Sacramento Kings basketball, to stand up taller, yell louder, and smile about the fact that we get to watch our team play one more game. It may be over soon... the Kings might move away or I might drop dead, either way, once that happens, it's over.

If I have only one life to live, one lifetime of fandom, I will be a Kings fan and I will cheer until the very end; cheer for every offensive rebound, every dunk, every three, everytime a player falls to ground after the ball, every young player killing himself to get in the rotation, every smart foul, every offensive possession with four or more passes... it's all magic! GO KINGS!

i'm definitely in it.

"when the laughter turns to crying,
through the winning and losing and trying,
i will be here."

i love this team not just because they were winning. i love them because of everything they've done, everything they taught me, and all the fun they've given me.

when we migrated and i was very down, they were the only thing i looked forward to; the only thing who kept me sane and happy. they've made me stronger and i have found a lot about myself because of them.

i know it's tough right now, but the least i can do to repay them is to keep on cheering and stick by them through thick and thin.

go kings, i love you guys, always.

(i know, i'm a little dramatic right now ;) )

I did'nt jump on the winning bandwagon,Not gonna jump off with the losing bandwagon!! You have got to accept the bad with the good, just like a successful marriage. The Sacramento Kings need OUR support ,more right now than they ever have.I know its hard, its hard for me too, hard to watch them lose to teams were acustomed to beating. Its also hard for me to read all the negitive bullsh.. I understand there will always be negitives, but there are always positives too.I will always support this TEAM any way i can....and it does'nt matter where they play.I'm a firm believer that things happen for a reason.I know this team will come back, better than ever..
GO KINGS!!!!!!!

I'm making an arbitrary announcement. This thread is not going to be turned into something negative, or something used by trolls from other teams. If you can't be positive, at least in here, then please do not post a comment.

Thank you...

GO KINGS!!!!

Look on the bright side-at least it will be easier to get tickets! I remember before they got good I could buy tickets on a whim and catch a game or two each year.

Maybe some just need to be directed to specific positive things to look for, instead of just focusing on the w/l record. For example, Kevin Martin's evolution as a player. Mike Bibby's terrific shooting over the last several games etc.

It's just like life. Prior to last year, we were living the basketball equivelant of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. We had the most entertaining bball team in the country. Now, we are living more of a suburban/working class bball life. Still very fulfilling, just not as flashy or obvious. So, we have to scratch at the surface a little to see the jewel beneath. I'm ok with that.

This is an incredible team and I think they're going to be struggling to find their way for a while. Any one of our starters and quite a few of our bench are capable of BIG things on any night. It may be mid season or later before we see their real potential. I hope it isn't that long, but .....

I still believe

I've been a fan since the day I was born, July 1st 1987.

If I lived through the age of Vinny Del Negro, Otis Thorpe, Kenny Smith, and Pervis Ellison...

I think I can manage through Bibby, Bonzi, SAR, Miller, and Peja...

I'm a Sacramento Kings fan forever, and nothings gonna change that!

I swear VF, everytime it feels like I want to give up watching this team, you come up with some poetic heart string tugger piece of work like this. Damn you for not letting me give up. ;) By the way, does this apply to our beloved 49ers as well or is the line for that ride a bit longer?:)

If Petrie made a big move by trading away Peja, Miller, or both I think the excitement will be right there again even if they don't set the world on fire afterwards. It is exciting when those big trades happen, like the two last season. I was especially sad to see Webber go, but very excited to see them trying to go in a new direction and rebuild. I would be very sad to see Peja and Brad leave also, but I would love to see it happen because I think this team has gone as far as it is going to go with those two.
