The Monkey Off

Its on espn and I was thinking the same...

Does Peyton get the monkey off his back today?

While I happen to be a Pats fan I also have to admit I have an incredible distaste for the entire Manning family who seem to be treated like royalty despite the fact that not ONE of them has ever won a game of consequence. Peyton in particular really annoys me with his habit of throwing his whole team under the bus after a tough loss.

So now that I've admitted my complete bias in this affair, I'll attempt the question at hand:

I doubt it. Even if the Colts win today he has to win the Super Bowl. Or so they said about Elway until he actually won. I guess just by getting there he'll be on equal footing as Marino but I still think the younger Elway and Marino for his entire career didn't have half the teams around them that Peyton has had over the past few years.

One other consideration - if the Colts win by a field goal or less today's story is Adam Vinatieri. I am still hoping it comes down to a kick and Adam intentionally shanks it and rejoins his former teammates in celebration afterwards. I guess I watch too much pro-wrestling.

If there's any quarterback could take a mediocre team to the Superbowl, it's Tom Brady. So, it wouldn not surprise me if he pulled it off.

Today is Peyton's day. Just as not many people gave the Bears a chance against the Saints, who are crushing the Saints as we speak, the Colts will win today.

I thought the Bears were the better team but picked the Saints based on their feel good story and the explosiveness of Bush to be able to break one play that would change the game. For about 35 minutes I was feeling decent about that but in the end the better team ended up coming through.

I don't think Brady does it on his own - at least not like Elway (who is still my favorite all time) or Marino did. The Pats have a lot of unheralded players and always have. They're the underdogs today just as they have been in just about all of their big games during the run. People get too focused on individual matchups and lose the fact that its a team game.

Remember how I said it wouldn't surprise me if Brady could pull this out, well he's doing it so far, and it's not surprising.

Brady is the new Montana. I am a die hard niners fan and yes he is on the same level. I know Montana is a legend. Brady will go down as one to.

So far the Colts are the Kings, the Patriots are the Lakers. Never quite able to get over that last obstacle in your way.

As I type this there was an interception and the Patriots took it in for a score. 21-3. Game over.

Its not just Brady, the defense is throttling the Colts right now. The running game is what's really doing the Colts offense in, and Brady is good enough to keep the Colts from playing 8 or 9 men in the box. KC and Baltimore both thought they could beat the Colts just by running it.

Brady is the new Montana, I agree with that. They are the two best quarterbacks I've ever seen at executing their respective game plans. Not so sure I agree with the Colts and Kings comparison though.

Needless to say its not even half time, nothing is settled. I've seen Peyton come back from worse.

But not in a game of importance.

I know that, but like the team I root for I don't celebrate until the game has actually been decided.

eta: like I said... way too early

I'm absolutely sick now. I was really uneasy when the Pats got the big lead so early and came out flat to start the half. I was actually reminded of the Kings-Lakers game 4 - when one team is up big there is only one way for momentum to go.

Congrats Peyton. But go Bears!

Huh. Imagine that... two Black head coaches in the Superbowl for the first time ever.

I think I'll actually watch... for only the third time in my life...

I say they win it too.
My irrational hatred of Peyton will not allow me to root for them but I think you're right. The Bears' Grossman lead offense fits right into Indy's defensive hands. I wouldn't be surprised if Peyton comes out looking pretty ugly in the game but still on the right end of a low scoring mostly field goal game.

Good for Manning. I've always been surprised at how much hate there is out for the guy...
Ever seen his press conferences after a loss? He just starts throwing blame around like its going out of style.

My personal beef is more with his family as a whole. Archie and Eli leave a far worse taste in my mouth but Peyton is really the only one even worth bothering to root against.

Well, guess you'll be a Bears fan two weekends from now. :) Definitely no gimme for the Colts.
I probably will root the Bears somewhat unexcitedly if only because when I have no dog in the hunt I tend to root for the underdogs. That's actually how I became a Pats fan in the first place (Broncos have always been my top team). The first year I lived in Boston they went 1-15 with Scott Zolak as QB. Couldn't help but love the guys and have been a fan ever since.

I lived in Maine for a few years growing up. I remember them getting pasted by the Bears in the SB. :) So I definitely enjoyed seeing the Pats win the last few years since my team (Niners) has been sucking it up.

I could watch three straight games of Brady vs Manning personally. Both are amazing QB's.

The team with the best record in the NFL is an underdog?

Although I don't watch all that much football (in recent years), I may have to watch this game...for two reasons.

First, being a native of Illinois, I have to cheer for the Bears. Second, as Slim mentioned, history will be made in this game...no matter who wins.

Of course they are. The AFC has been the powerhouse conference for several years now and at least on paper Indy matches up favorably on both sides of the ball. I'm sure when the betting lines open up Indy will be favored by at least a FG if not a full touchdown.

eta: yup - betting lines are open and all the major Vegas casinos are giving the Bears a full 7.

Maybe they'll have Mike Ditka on the sidelines, and everyone can chant DA BEARS!!!

;)

I'm very happy to see the Colts finally get to the bowl...
Ever since the Pats knocked off my Rams, I have wished for them to go down in defeat. Tonight it was just awesome to see Dungy make it & ex Pats kicker ''Venitare'' well at least one ex Patriot moves on!

Props to the Bears...should be an excellent Super Bowl.

Great offense vs. great Defense.

Congratulations to Peyton and the Colts. Very very glad to see him get that ape off his back today and advance. He had a helluva game today. Congratulations to coach Dungy for getting through to the big dance, it was a rough year last season.

I have a harder time rooting for lil brother Eli for his shenanigans than I do Peyton. Peyton at least has done something in this league thoughout his career. And I for damn sure I KNOW I can't root for the annointed one St. Bellichek, geezus am I glad to have yet another superbowl without him.

Bring on the Super Bowl baby!! Should be fun!!

Anybody with HD having a Super Bowl Party? **6th blatantly looks for an invite* :p
