The Micromanagement of Chris Webber

This is a response to a talk show caller who called last night on the post game and today on the 1140 4pm show saying that he saw Chris Webber last night at the ATM while the game was going on and the team was getting it's proverbial head kicked in....

Dear Mr.Talk Show Caller.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! You are the man, you did it, I stand and tip my hat to you. You actually got on the radio and broke the story of the year. You said that last night when you left the game in the fourth quarter, you just happened to stop at the nearest Wells Fargo and saw a 6'10 man at the ATM driving a Bentley. OH MY GOD!! There is Chris "freakin" Webber at the ATM. What is he doing here? Shouldn't he be sitting on the end of the bench, being a nice boy and sticking with his team, clapping when they come back to the bench and root his team on to a 30 point butt whoopin????

Mr. Talk Show Caller, I say to you, WHO CARES!!! BIG FREAKIN DEAL!!! I don't care if Chris Webber was half way to Reno with his money ready to throw it down at the Craps table!! Ready to put a wager on the Eagles (by the way Eagles 31, Patriots 30 :D ). I am sick and tired of this town (yes, I called Sacramento a town, and I have lived here half of my life) micromanaging this team and particularly Webber like it is some struggling business in Natomas and Webber is the young punk stockboy. If the Maloofs don't care, if Petrie don't care, if Adelman don't care, neither should you Mr. Talk Show Caller.

The bottom line is these are grown NBA, multimillionaires and we are not. And they are allowed to do certain things on their job that I am not allowed to do on my job. For crying out loud, if my boss micromangaged me on my job, the way Sacramento micromangages the Kings, I would quit and go work somewhere like Wal-Mart. Just because Chris Webber makes 20 million dollars a year, does not give you the right to question and scrutinize his every single move, especially after every single loss. And what makes me sick Mr. Talk Show Caller, is you will be the first one on your feet cheering when Chris throws down 20, 10 and 5 Thursday night when the Kings win against the Spurs.

GIVE IT A REST, GO ABOUT YOU SIMPLE LITTLE LIFE AND STOP TRYING TO STOMP WITH THE BIG DOGS, and let this season play itself out. Get off of the ledge and go back to Section 212, Row Z seat whatever and let these guys play basketball. We are not babysitters we are fans, grow up.

Signed, I am sick and tired of Bandwagoners, who make a big deal out of nothing everytime the Kings lose

word.

The guy changed/elaborated his story less than 24hrs. He said last night Webb was walking fine, today it was "he was limping, wearing such and such shoes and dirving a Bentley"...gee I wonder if he peeked over his shoulder and took a look at his pin # too.

I don't care what these people are doing. I don't care what they say. As long as they aren't killing people, raping people, being a menace to society, just play freaking basketball! These people put themselves in a position to be judged, but it does not give us the right to judge them.

I don't know that Chris Webber wasn't at the game more than I know that he was. I don't know what Peja means when he talks to the Serbian press more than I do when talks to the US press. I'm not up to physco-analyzing everything that is said and done by these players as if they were the leaders of the freeworld.

I am a fan of this team, I am a fan of basketball. I watch becasue I enjoy it and it ends there.

Seriously... we all act like we are the kings. We are fans, and thats what we should act like, not players.

Yeah, now he is saying that he talked to him.

Next he'll be saying that he got Webber to take him for a ride in his car...

doubtful... what you didn't hear is that webber isn't rolling around on his own, and behind his bentley is a big ol' escalade ... i've seen webber around town and every time he has a car full of his boys trailing behind him.

so, in retrospect, i do believe not trying to "peek over his shoulder & get a pin #" ranks very high on the survival scale!

He noticed his shoes? I can only speak as a typical guy... but the only time I've ever noticed ANYONE'S shoes is on that rare occassion when I'm being kicked.

Ok, here's the story, or as I like to call it now "ATM-gate":

Last night:

Guy calls in to the post game show, says he's a season ticket holder, goes to every game, has never left early before, couldn't take it last night and left in the middle of the the 4th Q. He and his buddies carpool to save $, splitting the cost with one of them parking at a nearby shopping center. He goes to drop off his friend, appearently parked by an ATM, at which he supposedly sees Chris Webber (looking and walking fine)...or a big tall guy. End of story. The guys on the other end of the phone, Coach T and Jason Ross basically just blow him off, saying they don't know etc..

Today:

I don't know if he called into the morning show, but they in typical fashion ran with the story. And again in typical fashion taking sides, 2-1.

Hours later he calls into Grants show, says the same stroy, all the way up to when he gets to the ATM. This time says he see a Bentley, remarks about how nice of a car it is, sees this tall guy which such and such shoes on, thinks its maybe a relative of a player then realizes its Chris Webber, limping along to the ATM. Mike Lam, being Mike Lam jumps all over the story, villifying Chris Webber. Grant says he should have stayed with the team, but pretty much brushes the story off saying that the game and what the Kings did--didn't do is more important.

Now, the guy calls into the evening show with Jim Kozimor. Now he says he didn't want to tells this to Grant because of Grant's nature and he just didn't want to be called a moron and get hung up on, but now, according to him (same story, but) he sees Chris Webber, says to him " hey I guess you couldn't take it either" (or something to that effect) to which Webb supposedly just looks at him funny. Then he says, his kid or his friends kid or something like that says to Chris " he we still love you" to which Chris supposedly says " Thanks". Koz, in typical Koz fashion, plays some company line, trying to rationalize it in the perpsective of the Kings, if it really happened.

Okay, everything else aside, does anyone really think Webber has to go to an ATM on a Sunday night for a little pocket change?

This "season-ticket holder" has now had much more than his 15 minutes of fame. Gee, I wonder if Chad Ford will break the story on the national level?

There is a real sickness in the Sacto fanbase. I get a feeling the talk radio boobs are part of it. Yuck.

Part of it? They are a driving force behind it. With a cumulative IQ approaching the weight of a cantaloupe, those gerbils have caused a lot of unnecessary problems and angst for the Kings and the fans.

Grant Napear is one of the worst. He seems to enjoy more credibility (misplaced IMHO) because he does do broadcasts and is held up as some kind of reliable source. He has made a lot of stupid comments on his radio show, which is NOT affiliated with Maloof Sports. Mike Lam is an LA transplant. Koz is a nice guy who is often put in the unenviable position of trying to undo some of the damage done by Napear and Lam.

I consider myself very lucky not to be able to listen to them on a regular basis.

Where was Chris?

Maybe he should have been on the bench suffering with everyone else.

He is the LEADER right?

Not to obsess or feed into some crazy ATM theory. But, it's a legitimate question.

I think he WAS on the bench. I said so last night and ATM-gate notwithstanding I'm about 85-90% certain I saw him. Even if he wasn't on the bench - and I think he was - he could have been in the locker room having his ankle attended to.

Like you said, he didn't have to do this during the game. I can understand why fans are upset if this is the case. Just imagine if Kobe did something like this - LA would roast him. It's not exactly a life and death situation but out of respect for the team, and the fans, perhaps he could have waited until the game was over.

That's just my opinion.

Who cares. Before last night, dude was averaging 28ppg, 13reb, and 6 assist, shooting 53 percent and 90 percent from the free throw. We were all singing his praises. Then all of a sudden he gets hurt does something questionable, and now he is not a leader? If it wasn't for this one person who wants their 15 minutes of fame, we wouldn't have known anything. It's not like somebody saw him in Vail, Colorado getting knee surgery without the teams consent.

Leave the man alone. If he left for whatever reason, so what... Nobody has any right say what or what he wasnt doing or what he should or shouldnt have done. Untill we know the whole story, which we probably will never know, lets just wait it out.

One random guy leaves the game and 'sees' Webber at an ATM. Sure it would be ideal time for him to go, late night, nobody out, BUT all we can go by is this one mans 'word', who may just be trying to stir stuff up.

My take on it all... eh...

You're missing the point. There is NO PROOF whatsoever that this caller, who has changed his story three times now, is anything that he claims OR that he actually saw anyone - let alone Webber - at an ATM.

This is nothing more than a tempest in a teapot, IMHO.

Yup. Especially if it happened during a game, not during the summer.

I don't think this takes away Webber's leadership. If he made this mistake this caller is accusing him of, fans will call him on it. When Webber plays for the Kings the following game, the fans will be cheering him on again.

Lamar - Get a grip. We don't know that Webber did anything, let alone make what you say is a mistake.

If it was anyone other than Chris Webber, would this even be under discussion? I've resigned myself to the fact that for some people Webber will always be under the microscope. I'm sure if he inadvertently fails to toss his aluminum cans in a recycling bin, someone will find a way to tie it to a Kings loss.

I'd like to see anybody here stand up to the constant and continuing scrutiny Webber has had to endure. If he was at the ATM, which I still doubt, so what? If he couldn't be on the court, what difference did it make if he was on the bench, in the locker room, or on his way home?

I don't believe the story at all! The caller keep making new stories up?! He just wants attention.

I agree the man wants attention, he's called every show on KHTK today. Having said that, it's more that he's adding details rather than giving three different stories. And having said that, there was no mention of the looming Escalade anywhere in any of the verisions I've heard.

But, I also agree with Lamar. Change the name to the star player of any other team leaving early (and I tend to believe that Chris did leave early after listening to Koz tonight on the radio), and we'd be making so much fun of THAT OTHER player, we'd all have to buy new keyboards before the night was over. :)
