The Kings' future

This topic is about the upcoming draft.

The Kings are sitting at 22-44. I think that would normally qualify as a very high pick. But thanks to the many bottomdwellers of the Eastern Conference, we are in 'competition' for a higher position in the draft, and there in a huge logjam.

Kings (22-44)
76ers (23-42)
Knicks (22-43)
Pistons (23-42)
Pacers (21-44)
Wizards (21-42)

Even the Clippers (25-41) worry me.

Already ahead of Minnesota, Golden State, and New Jersey, we could potentially be 10th in draft position .

Yes, during our rebuilding process, this is my final year of wanting to tank. After this draft I expect us to have the bulk of our rebuilding done.

We need a star center, and we can attain one in the draft with a high pick.

Will we get a high enough pick? I don't know, and that worries me...

I feel like the upcoming games are critical to lose :(, because I think our draft position has great consequences for our Kings' future.

Hopefully we can at least come out of this draft with Aldrich. Cousins would be ideal but Aldrich isn't too far behind him imo.

That is interesting. Win less than 30 games, still get the 10th spot? That would suck.

that would really blow. i mean sure the season has had some good moments and we have some young talent, but we are still in need of another young star.

and Bosh or Amare

Aldrich is just going to be a roleplayer. Its a pretty big gap, at least potentially, between he and Cousins, or he and any of the guys who have a chance to be stars.

Lots of teams in the NBA have a lot riding on this offseason.

If Kings can grab Bosh and Cousins or Turner, they're are pretty much set to contend. If Kings can't make a significant free agent signing and end up with Aldrich, I'd expect another mediocre, possibly even a replica of this season, type of season.

I agree with you... Cousins has star potential. I think Aldrich could be a Kaman type of center for us... I'm hoping we at least get him but I'm hoping for Cousins.

Well whether we like it or not, Aldrich is the second best center in this draft. Its odd that people don't like him because he happens to be what most of us want. He's a defensive center that can score a little bit. I know everyone wants to hang that slow white image on him, but he's a pretty athletic player.

Having said that, I really want Cousins. If I can't get Cousins, I might just say the hell with it and draft Udoh, who I think is going to rise on the draft boards.

I think most of us that want a center just want Cousins soooo badly. Aldrich is unappealing when compared to Cousins but a pretty good prospect at the center position in his own right. If we're anywhere outside of the top 3 then Aldrich will be my big hope probably.

But if we're looking for a big goalie in the paint is there anyone better? He's a terrific defender, both as a shotblocker and in post up situations.

I wouldnt be disappointed with us getting Aldrich if we cant get Cousins...

...But, I really hope we get Cousins. That dude looks pretty 20/10 if you ask me... Heck, maybe even 20/12.

If we do end up way down there picking around 10. I'm feelin' Udoh or Whiteside. Might as well make a high ceiling/ high bust gamble.

I have a feeling it's going to be a real suckfest in the East trying to win the race for the most ping pong balls. We'll have to try REAL hard to lose enough to do better than 8th worst in my opinion. Let's just hope we get a little luck this year.

Or maybe if we win enough games, the balls bounce just enough in our favor for us to get one of the top spots. We'v seen what having the worst record in the league gets us (4th pick, which actually turned out pretty darn good for us).

I'll take whoever Petrie drafts. Its worked before, why not again?
Oh yeah, certainly. Just like Martin had worked wonderfully for us, so did Thompson and Hawes and that dwarf shooting guard ( Douby ) we had before.

BTW, just one question - where were we again the past several seasons and where are we now in the win/loss column? :p

I'm just kidding of course. I know what you mean.;)

Good. (that you were kidding.) Cause say what you want about Petrie as a GM. He is the best drafter in the NBA in the last 12 years. How do you pick a J-will, Peja, Kevin, Hedo, Casspi, Evans, at the slots he got them in? You don't. Unless you are Geoff Petrie.

What to expect next year?

08-09 > 17-65 > Lottery > Yay! What a season .

09-10 > 27?-55? > Lottery > Lots of ups and downs but we got our franchise player Tyreke Evans.

10-11 > ? > ? > ?:)

you can add Garcia and Brockman to that list and its too early to tell on JT and Hawes

So somehow it's too early to tell on guys who have been in the league for multiple years yet not too early to tell for a couple of rookies (I mean with the exception of Reke of course)

hmm...he's pretty consistently drafted well, but thow do you get those guys? Get in the right draft year. Consider: J-Will was taken jsut before Dirk and Pierce. While I have defended that pick, it was actually a miss. Peja was taken jsut before Nash, Jermaine, and Big Z. Hedo was tkane jsut befroe MoPete, and Desmond Mason -- roughly equivalent players at their peaks, although Hedo has outlasted them. Evans was a nice score, but one fot eh things that made me ok wiht the pick were the rumblings aorund the league of all kinds of teams that would have taken him. Kevin and Gerald, and to a lesser degree Casspi were the key late round scores, although again it should be noted that all of thoe guys actually went almsot exactly where the mocks had them going. We were the team that actually took them, so go us, but somebody right in the immediate region of the draft was expected to each time. In short there is no one year where Petrie was so far ahead of the game it is inconceivable, but the accumulated success makes for a strong record. They are all explainable and in some cases even mistakes, but doing it consistently indicatres something.

Still, slightly better than Kenny Smith instead of Kevin Johnson, or Joe Kleine instead of Karl Malone. At least he does his homework, unlike the era that proceeded him. Anyone that followed college basketball knew that Sean Elliott was a better pick than Pervis Ellison at the time. Everyone but the Kings organization. Who can forget the great Dick Motta having four first round picks and only hitting successfully on one of the four.

I do think that because of the ineptitude of prior GM's, that Petrie is elevated to a position thats a little higher than it should be. He may not have brought genius to the position, but he certainly brought common sense and structure. I think the drafting ability of any GM is tested when he has to pick in the lower half of the first round. To that end, Petrie has done an Ok job, but not necessarily a great job. In the second round, Petrie has either thrown a dart at the board, or traded it away for a future 2 round that he can, once again throw a dart at the board. The only mainstay second round pick that comes to mind is Fundreburke. Who knows, maybe Brockman will break the drought.

However other GM's have drafted not only good players in the second round, but in some cases, stars. All in all I think he's a good GM. A bit too conservative for me at times, but for me to become too critical of him for the moves he didn't make, without knowing all the particulars would be unfair. This coming offseason is his big test. We shall see!!

I expect us to look like the Thunder this year. Or atleast the Thunder last year.
